Digital choreographies: the body as a site for gestural mapping

This article is a hybrid reflection on the potential of digital capture to reveal spatio-temporal choreographic negotiations between body and built environment. Acknowledging a lack of engagement within environments that account for the expressive potential of the body and which constrain, dictate and industrialize it, with the proposed somatic research we set out to conduct an observation of the performance of body behavior in the way we interact with a seminal design object: a chair. Thus, the essay is a hybrid observation of bodily performances within quotidian environments that extends choreographic practice and knowledge beyond traditional choreographic contexts to account for the expressive, playful possibilities of the sentient body. The research fluctuates between practices of choreography and design staged in the scenographic landscape of digital photography and digital animation software to map the choreo-mediation between body and object: what is performed by the body in order to ‘interact’ with the proposed choreographic frameworks of a chair. A non-linear, digital, self-ethnographic approach presents two multi-sited studies to analyze this choreomediation: from stop-motion capture of a body performing negotiations with a chair to a digital transcription as a visual mapping of a three-dimensional self-avatar, performing the techniques of sitting. © 2023 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

Playing has important psychosocial and emotional benefits for older adults. The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the interest in incorporating digital interactions and virtual reality (VR) technologies into healthcare strategies that target older adults. In this phenomenological study, we share our experience of bringing playful and creative gaming and VR technologies to community-dwelling older adults. With funding from Fonds de recherche du Québec – Société et culture (FRQSC), we created a storefront engAGE living lab (ELL) in a shopping mall in a suburb of Montreal (Quebec, Canada) with a high concentration of older population. In this study we tried to repeat a previous study "finding better games for older adults" that was conducted in a university-based research centre for healthy ageing (PERFORM Centre, Concordia University). In this study, based on experience of three research assistants who ran the study between July-Dec 2022, we evaluated strength, weakness, opportunity, and threats (SWOT) of conducting this research in ELL. We found that passive recruitment of older adults into such studies was challenging. To establish trust and long-term relationships between researchers and participants was an important factor in retaining participants in the study, but it created transactional situations where some participants’ motivations were not related to tested technologies, but to socializing with researchers. This work provides insights into the challenges and opportunities of conducting research in public settings. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Lambeosaurine hadrosaurs are a group of duck-billed herbivorous dinosaurs that possess variably shaped hollow cranial crests that are among the most extreme cranial structures ever to evolve. These crests developed as expansions of the nasal passages during sexual maturity and acted as resonators for vocal communication and visual display. This paper discusses the work-in-process, Dinosaur Choir, which recreates lambeosaurine skulls as musical skull instruments. The skull and nasal passages were created using Computed Tomography (CT) scans of hadrosaur skulls and the larynx is constructed based on paleontological research. Musicians and participants use the instruments by blowing into a mouthpiece or microphone, and the larynx creates the sound that is then resonated through the nasal passages. The instruments are intended for scientific experimentation, interactive exhibition, and musical performances. Dinosaur Choir aims to give an embodied experience with extinct animals long lost to the past. This paper considers how scientific research as well as musical and practical concerns impact the design process, exploring how to balance rigorous exploration of dinosaur communication with informed speculation and experimental music. © 2023, International Conference on New Interfaces for Musical Expression. Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs) are the gold standard in health intervention research. However, in lifestyle intervention studies, this methodology is often challenged by the complexity of personal and contextual factors, which are hard to control. To address this challenge, researchers have adopted Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials (CONSORT) as a framework to rank the quality of RCTs based on detailed documentation of the design, methodology, and results of the study. In this paper, we present a case study to demonstrate benefits of adopting CONSORT as a framework for designing and conducting a trial to investigate the affordances of information and communication technologies (ICT) in lifestyle interventions. Framed as a randomized controlled trial, our study targeted healthy community-dwelling older adults in Montreal. The study took place between Oct 2021-July 2022 and included qualitative and quantitative data collection, about the benefits of online-learning (digital photography), and on-Zoom group discussions. All pre-post psychometric assessments and interviews were conducted on zoom. We evaluate our study to illustrate: (i) To what extent such RCT design, methodology and reporting can satisfy CONSORT;(ii) Which factors contribute to trials deviations from the CONSORT framework;and (iii) What data acquisition strategies maximize the benefits of applying the CONSORT framework. Our analysis indicate that CONSORT provides a frame within which one can flexibly document and contextualize the dynamics of how ICT interventions could benefit their target population. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Down to Earth: on Space Urbanism and Space Cities takes the form of a manifesto to formulate a series of demands towards the construction of an inclusive and equitable global space program. Informed by four artistic and civilian initiatives, the paper addresses the Earth-based right to interplanetary infrastructures of telecommunication. Its premise is that the city is a prime location for the concretization of space technology, and therefore a productive site from which to invent new social and cultural values. It introduces four projects, Cesar Saez's Geostationary Banana Over Texas, Christina Kubisch's Electrical Walks, Brazilian Satellite Hackers, and Simon Weckert's 99 smartphones, which act as provocations for addressing the right to global equity, the right to sensory experience, the right to hack, and the right to slow down. Together, these four principles suggest new cohabitation strategies that are examined in their capacity to give rise to informed engagement with space technology. © 2022 by the International Astronautical Federation (IAF). Air after Space: From the Invisible to the Tangible is a play on words that seeks to create connections between the experience and the conceptualisation of air on Earth and in space. Can the differences between the ubiquity and assumed access to air on Earth and its scarcity in space give rise to a renewed understanding of its political economy? The paper looks at two artistic practices, that of Tomas Saraceno and Alice Jarry, to render visible the social, environmental, and critical dimensions of an invisible milieu. We first discuss the work of Tomas Saraceno, who reflects on the toxicity of air through large-scale airborne installations involving haptic and embodied participation. We then turn our attention to [re]capture by Alice Jarry, a project that creates a dialogue between atmospheric data in the city and a gallery installation. As both projects underline important questions of socio-environmental justice, this paper engages with the manifold manifestations of air: as data, as environments, as ecosystems, as survival conditions, and as a playground. © 2022 by the International Astronautical Federation (IAF). Data- and interaction-driven approaches for sustained musical practices with machine learning

While contemporary discourse on AI often fixates on large ‘foundation’ models, these types of models often offer only limited ability for musicians to express their musical intentions and agency. In this article, following a brief reflection on and critique of the musicality of large music models informed by our own experimentation, we describe a richer set of possibilities for integrating machine learning into musical practices. We outline several alternative approaches within machine learning which can better support sustained musical practices. These include approaches underpinned by an understanding of training data as a vehicle for communicating intention (as opposed to a representation of ‘ground truth’), approaches that leverage small datasets and models, and approaches that employ other interactive mechanisms to capture human intention and agency. We present examples of our own musical projects that illustrate these approaches, and we discuss the implications of our alternative perspectives on data and intention for system development, musical practice, future research, and the future of musicking.

Deliberative democracy has received growing attention in business ethics as well as in management and organization studies. We consider dialogue a central feature of such deliberation and explore how participants in collaborative housing (cohousing) organizations engage in dialogue to manage conflict while seeking consent or consensus. Our findings suggest that several mechanisms and processes contribute to the creation of a context that favors dialogue: self-selection, training, facilitation, a space for managing tensions, and agonism. The commitment to making use of consent/consensus-seeking processes in this context can direct members towards deliberative processes that induce productive dialogue. © 80th Annual Meeting of the Academy of Management 2020: Understanding the Inclusive Organization, AoM 2020. The deployment of 6th Generation (6G) mobile networks will bring revolutionary changes to organizations and users through higher speeds, lower latency, and more intelligent network management. This will require more efficient spectrum sharing to improve network performance. Cognitive Radio (CR) can be employed to help achieve this goal. However, data collection at the fusion center for cooperative spectrum sensing (CSS) creates a risk of sensing user (SU) data leakage. In this paper, an intelligent CSS algorithm for mobile communication is proposed based on Federated Learning with a Swin-Transformer. First, to achieve the cross-domain process, a Continuous Wavelet Transform (CWT) is used with the normalized time series data to obtain a time-frequency spectrum map with joint time-frequency features. Second, Federated Learning is employed to realize distributed CSS to reduce sensing overhead, improve the security of sensing data, and eliminate the SU data isolation with traditional distributed CSS. Then, a new Swin-Transformer spectrum sensing is proposed for fusion learning of the time-frequency spectrum map. The fusion of Federated Learning and Swin-Transformer neural network provides cooperation with multiple SUs to achieve efficient spectrum sensing using the K -rank fusion criterion. Compared with the Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), ViT-Transformer, Graph Neural Network (GNN) and EfficientNet algorithms, the detection probability of the proposed algorithm has increased by 45 %, and the false alarm probability has decreased by 13 %.

There are many examples of visual images stemming from sound and vibration. Lissajous figures, named after the French mathematician Lissajous (d.1880), have long been a source of fascination and some have been used as commercial logos. Much attention has been given to Chladni figures, named after the father of modal analysis, Ernst Chladni (d. 1827). An extensive collection was published by Mary Waller (d. 1959) and Hans Jenny (d. 1972) photographed the response to high-frequency excitation of many different physical systems, solids, liquids and powders. Other examples of visual images include the response of thin metal plates to wide-band random vibration by which Chladni-type patterns may be generated. These essentially two-dimensional figures have been extended recently by Woodhouse to three dimensions.
