Exploration of deaf people's health information sources and techniques for information delivery in Cape Town: A qualitative study for the design and development of a mobile health app

Background: Many cultural and linguistic Deaf people in South Africa face disparity when accessing health information because of social and language barriers. The number of certified South African Sign Language interpreters (SASLIs) is also insufficient to meet the demand of the Deaf population in the country. Our research team, in collaboration with the Deaf communities in Cape Town, devised a mobile health app called SignSupport to bridge the communication gaps in health care contexts. We consequently plan to extend our work with a Health Knowledge Transfer System (HKTS) to provide Deaf people with accessible, understandable, and accurate health information. We conducted an explorative study to prepare the groundwork for the design and development of the system. Objectives: To investigate the current modes of health information distributed to Deaf people in Cape Town, identify the health information sources Deaf people prefer and their reasons, and define effective techniques for delivering understandable information to generate the groundwork for the mobile health app development with and for Deaf people. Methods: A qualitative methodology using semistructured interviews with sensitizing tools was used in a community-based codesign setting. A total of 23 Deaf people and 10 health professionals participated in this study. Inductive and deductive coding was used for the analysis. Results: Deaf people currently have access to 4 modes of health information distribution through: Deaf and other relevant organizations, hearing health professionals, personal interactions, and the mass media. Their preferred and accessible sources are those delivering information in signed language and with communication techniques that match Deaf people's communication needs. The Personas technique has been promoted as a strong tool for providing software developers with a better understanding of the prospective users of their software. This paper reports from a questionnaire survey regarding knowledge about Personas and their usage in software development companies. The questionnaire survey was conducted in a limited geographical area to establish the extent of Personas usage within all companies in the chosen region and determine whether software development companies used Personas during the development process. Several issues were identified as reasons for either not using the technique or for poor application of it. The study showed that 55% of the respondents had never heard about Personas. Among those who had heard about the Personas technique, the following obstacles towards usage of the technique were identified: Lack of knowledge of the technique, lack of resources (time and funding), Sparse descriptions - when applied and Personas not being integrated in the development. VISCOPLASTIC COLLAPSE OF SHARP-NOTCHED CIRCULAR TUBES UNDER CYCLIC BENDING

This study discusses the experimental result of the viscoplastic response and col- lapse of sharp-notched 316L stainless steel tubes with different notched depths subjected to cyclic bending. The tube bending machine and curvature-ovalization measurement apparatus were used for conducting the symmetric curvature-controlled cyclic bending. To highlight the viscoplastic behavior, three different curvature-rates, 0.0035, 0.035 and 0.35 m-1s-1, were controlled. Ob- servations of a certain curvature-rate reveal that five almost parallel lines corresponding to five different notch-depth （0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8 and 1.0 mm） tubes were presented in the experimental relationship between the cyclic controlled curvature and the number of cycles needed to pro- duce buckling on a log-log scale. However, the slopes for the three different curvature-rates are different. An empirical formulation was proposed to simulate the aforementioned relationship. When comparing with the experimental findings, the simulation was in good agreement with the experimental data.

In the context of Smart Factories chances and challenges for the use of Federative Factory Data Management (FFDM) arise. Within Smart Factories involved systems, products and resources are equipped with Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS). The seamless integration of these CPS devices into networks provides the possibility for FFDM on world wide access to factory data. The actuality, but also the amount of data on all levels of the Smart Factory is continuously increasing. The need for new methods and tools for the representation and the presentation of this factory data is required. Combining the web technologies in the FFDM-approach on the one hand and the integration of CPS of Smart Factories into FFDM on the other hand allow new possibilities for the usage of mobile internet devices in FFDM. In this paper the concept for the employment of a mobile internet device as instrument for the presentation of FFDM-data is described. Parallel an approach for the integration of CPS based devices into the FFDM is described. As a representative scenario the monitoring of linked product data and process data in route sheets visualized within a mobile internet devices is described afterwards. Motivated by the recent biomimic design of microstructured adhesive surfaces,we study adhesion between a film-terminated fibrillar array and a rigid *** a two-dimensional model and ignoring the deformation of the fibers and the backing layer,we show that the adhesion behavior is dominated by a dimensionless parameter reflecting the global flexibility of the terminal *** particular,if the parameter is larger than 0.4,the adhesion is reversible;otherwise one or more hysteresis loops will appear after an approach-retraction cycle,leading to significant increase in the specific separation *** result is expected to help not only optimal design of the structure,but also other applications such as micro-manipulation in micromechanical systems.

Driven by worldwide demands for renewable energy source, photovoltaic (PV) inverters, which are the most important part for energy conversion, have seen a considerable amount of innovations in recent years. The trends for PV inverters are toward high efficiency, high reliability, low ground leakage current, low-output ac-current distortion, and reactive power capability. This paper provides an efficiency optimized design of an Auxiliary Resonant Snubber with Coupled-Magnetic Reset Zero-voltage switching (ZVS) inverter for PV application. The main device is Power MOSFETs, which have low conduction loss and could achieve ZVS in all load condition. The auxiliary devices are low current, low cost IGBTs and Diodes, which could achieve zero-current switching (ZCS). To achieve high efficiency, resonant circuit is analyzed to optimally design the resonant components, which is based on the guarantee of full range ZVS, gating delay-time design, and lower power loss in auxiliary circuit. The power loss model is also analyzed to select suitable power device and further improve the efficiency. At last, experiment results of a 5kW single phase inverter in PV system was presented, which has more than 99% CEC efficiency and work in full load condition without cooling fan. Besides, reactive power capability is also demonstrated.

Prototype of a federative factory data management for the support of factory planning processes

Due to short product life cycles, increasing variety of products and short cycles of leap innovations manufacturing companies have to increase the flexibility of factory structures. Flexibility of factory structures is based on defined factory planning processes in which product, process and resource data of various partial domains have to be considered. Thus factory planning processes can be characterized as iterative, interdisciplinary and participative processes [1]. To support interdisciplinary and participative character of planning processes, a federative factory data management (FFDM) as a holistic solution will be described. FFDM is already implemented in form of a prototype. The interim results of the development of FFDM will be shown in this paper. The principles are the extracting of product, process and resource data from documents of various partial domains providing as web services on a server. The described data can be requested by the factory planner by using a FFDM-browser.

Manufacturing companies are confronted with short product life cycles, more variety of products and short cycles of leap innovations. This results in a higher frequency of changes in factory structures and an increasing importance of factory planning processes. Factory planning processes are characterized by participative and interdisciplinary processes due to various actors dealing in different domains and working in distributed environments. The result is a heterogeneous ITlandscape based on increasing use of multiple isolated and domain-specific IT tools and systems and hereby an increasing redundant, inhomogeneous and inconsistent data-holding. The control of these factory planning processes can be reached by holistic approaches and consistent system integration. The mean of system integration is the consideration of all domains involved in planning processes, used IT tools and systems and business processes. In this paper, the approach of a Federative Factory Data Management (FFDM) based on Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) and Semantic Model funded by the DFG (Germany) and CAPES (Brazil) will be described, which faces up the described challenges of factory planning processes. The focus of this approach is on the integration of isolated used IT tools for the dimensioning and structuring of factory systems, the generated domain-specific partial models as well as the coordination and synchronization of engineering workflows. In order of the control of factory planning processes the integration and coupling of the views of products, processes and resources on metadata level is required for a communication between different isolated and domain-specific IT tools of the various involved domains without losses or redundancies. The equalization-cancellation (EC) model has been extensively studied for expressing binaural masking level difference (BMLD) in psychoacoustics. Few research focuses on applying this psychoacoustic model to speech processing applications, such as speech enhancement. In this paper, we propose a two-stage binaural speech enhancement with Wiener filter (TS-BASE/WF) based on the EC model. In this proposed TS-BASE/WF, interfering signals are first estimated by equalizing and cancelling the target signal based on the EC model, and a time-variantWiener filter is then applied to enhance the target signal given noisy mixture signals. The main advantages of the proposed TS-BASE/WF are: (1) effectiveness in dealing with non-stationary multiple-source interfering signals;(2) success in localizing the target sound source after processing. These advantages were confirmed by comprehensive experiments in different spatial scenarios in terms of speech enhancement and sound localization. ©2009 IEEE.
