The key of the drivers' behaviors are their driving decisions. To reveal the decision-making process, a new model with consideration of the deceleration limitation (DL) was built, based on a cellular automata (CA) model. In the DL model, the driver's decision was divided into three steps: decision-making, action and result. And the acceleration was taken as a decision variable and also two other core factors, i.e. distance between adjacent vehicles and their own velocity, were considered. Simulation results show that the DL model can simulate the interaction between vehicles realistically and describe the phase transition of traffic flow well. Further analyses illustrate that the density's change can cause the critical phase transition in traffic flow. These findings have effectively reproduced some realistic phenomenon and will help reduce the traffic congestion. © 2011 ASCE.

This paper discusses the experience of the project for upgrading and extending a DSS of huge extent and complexity, devoted to transport management, which is still a neglected domain for IS research. This DSS belongs to an Italian Ministry and the project had the form of a public contract. For many reasons, this project was long-lasting and much troubled, and when approaching the testing phase it could have been considered failed. A case investigation through an action research reveals that drastic changes in project organization (actors composition and interaction), and in methodology (from waterfall to agile-like methods), adopted even in this late phase of the development process, contributed to turn an anticipated project failure into a success. © 2013 IADIS.

Background: The histamine H₂ receptor antagonist ranitidine is US FDA-approved for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease and healing of erosive esophagitis in children ≥1 month of age. A low-dose strength of ranitidine is now available in a citrus-flavored 25mg effervescent tablet (dissolved in 5mL of water);this formulation was developed to facilitate use in infants and smaller children. Ranitidine syrup is available in a peppermint-flavored 15 mg/mL formulation. Objective: To compare taste preferences for ranitidine (Zantac®) syrup and ranitidine effervescent tablets dissolved in water (Zantac® EFFERdose®) in healthy children aged 4-8 years and their adult caregivers. Study Design and Methods: A randomized, single-blind, crossover, taste test trial was conducted in 102 children and 102 parents/legal guardians. All subjects received a single 45mg dose of each formulation. After tasting both preparations children were asked: "Now that you have tasted both medicines, which one of these medicines do you think tastes better?" Adults were asked four questions to assess whether they would administer the medication to the children. Results: Seventy-one percent (72/102) of the children preferred the taste of the ranitidine effervescent tablets compared with 29% (30/102) who preferred the syrup (p < 0.001). The majority of adults (71%) responded that they would prefer to administer the effervescent formulation based on taste. Adverse events consistent with product labeling were mild and were reported in four children and three adults: headache (n = 3), drowsiness (n = 1), abdominal pain/cramps (n = 2), and bloating/gas (n = 1). Conclusion: The taste of the ranitidine effervescent formulation dissolved in water is preferred over the ranitidine syrup. Better taste acceptance may facilitate ease of administration and compliance in pediatric patients. © 2006 Adis Data Information BV. All rights reserved.

Bayesian methods for the analysis of early-phase oncology basket trials with information borrowing across cancer types

Research in oncology has changed the focus from histological properties of tumors in a specific organ to a specific genomic aberration potentially shared by multiple cancer types. This motivates the basket trial, which assesses the efficacy of treatment simultaneously on multiple cancer types that have a common aberration. Although the assumption of homogeneous treatment effects seems reasonable given the shared aberration, in reality, the treatment effect may vary by cancer type, and potentially only a subgroup of the cancer types respond to the treatment. Various approaches have been proposed to increase the trial power by borrowing information across cancer types, which, however, tend to inflate the type I error rate. In this paper, we review some representative Bayesian information borrowing methods for the analysis of early-phase basket trials. We then propose a novel method called the Bayesian hierarchical model with a correlated prior (CBHM), which conducts more flexible borrowing across cancer types according to sample similarity. We did simulation studies to compare CBHM with independent analysis and three information borrowing approaches: the conventional Bayesian hierarchical model, the EXNEX approach and Liu's two-stage approach. Simulation results show that all information borrowing approaches substantially improve the power of independent analysis if a large proportion of the cancer types truly respond to the treatment. Our proposed CBHM approach shows an advantage over the existing information borrowing approaches, with a power similar to that of EXNEX or Liu's approach, but the potential to provide substantially better control of type I error rate. The Internet of Things (IoT) is a current approach which aims to act on pervasive environments for connecting smart objects. These objects are capable to sense their own environment, interacting and cooperating with other devices. However, the IoT also requires to perform coordination actions that devices cannot carry out with the embedded electronic. In order to create smarter collaborative systems, the Internet of Agents (IoA) approach arises as an alternative for providing information and services to other objects, systems and people, and to initialize actions if necessary. In this paper, a semantic model of public agent contracts based on OWL ontologies enriched with Open Linked Data has been proposed as a fundamental way to describe standard collaborative units that can interact in a social context. The overarching ontology we have named IoA-OWL takes into account functional and non-functional aspects organized in six profiles such as agent, context, model, service, social, and object.

Building upon existing software systems while maintaining or improving software quality is a major goal of software engineering. To achieve this, every software engineering phase (requirements analysis, software design, implementation, testing and maintenance) must produce good quality outputs for the next phase. We believe that a next generation reverse engineering tool can assist in realizing this need. InSight is a new and powerful CASE toolset for software developers and architects, designed to support the development and maintenance of software throughout the complete lifecycle. The inSight tool suite provides software architects and developers with new capabilities of understanding existing software systems, allowing them to ask their day-to-day questions directly to the tool and receive up-to-date answers while interacting with the tool. It includes data mining capabilities such as code flow extraction, and software interaction extraction such as operating system and application specific messaging, uses, needs, etc. The inSight tool suite also includes powerful graphical interfaces for presenting and manipulating the extracted information. Control flow is presented as editable flowcharts. InSight supports Protel, ANSI C, and C++. InSight uses a patent pending reverse engineering technique to perform these extractions.

An automated system for freight traffic optimization on a transport network has been developed, which is realized in the form of a complex computer program with application of the visual design environment of Embarcadero RAD Studio. The program complex consists of the main form from which two subprograms are loaded. The search of optimum routes performed by the routing optimization subprogram is used at transportations of freight on the set transport network based on different schemes (from one vertex (the supplier) to all other vertices (consumers), serially - from each vertex to all other vertices, and from two (or several) set of vertices to all other vertices). Freight delivery between the supply and consumption points was optimized by means of the freight transportation optimization subprogram, taking into account the restrictions on the volume of freight at the points of departure and destination. © 2023 Budapest University of Technology and Economics. The problem of the rational use of energy resources remains constantly relevant and requires the search for new approaches. One of them is power control. In AC circuits, the authors see the most promising method of phase AC power control. Based on it, a power control module was developed. The structural and circuit diagrams of the developed device are presented to implement the proposed solution. The authors produced its experimental prototype and conducted experimental testing at various levels of regulated power. Savings when using the proposed power control module were calculated using the example of energy consumption in various sectors of energy-intensive systems. According to the data obtained, the module allows saving energy consumption without significant discomfort to the energy user. The calculated results allow concluding that the proposed AC power control module is fully operational, and its widespread use will significantly reduce the need for electricity. © 2024 IEEE.

Predicting highway safety performance in quantitative terms on the basis of a set of highway geometric design and traffic control features is the core of the ongoing Highway Safety Manual (HSM) development. While great efforts have been made to develop safety performance models for different types of highways, evaluating the applicability of the models with crash data from states that were not used in the original model development is equally important. This step is critical in future HSM applications because of many noticeable differences in crash data recording practice and driving behaviors across the various states. Potential application concerns need to be evaluated fully and addressed before the manual is officially published. This paper presents the application experience of the safety prediction models and methodology for segments of two-lane rural roads as proposed for inclusion in Part III of the HSM. The study used data for state routes in Louisiana. The results indicate that the prediction models performed reasonably well: there were small differences between the observed and predicted crash frequencies, with calibration parameters applied, for all segments on rural two-lane high-ways in Louisiana. The results at different analysis levels (from individual segments to a network of segments) are summarized, and several application issues such as the level of effort versus degree of accuracy, simplification of the calibration process, and the need for a reliability measurement are discussed.
