Design of an Optical Wireless Communication Link Using Mid Wave Infrared Laser Source & Comparison with Short Wave Infrared Laser Sources in Different Atmospheric Anomalies: An Analytical Study

Optical Wireless Communication (OWC), sometimes referred to as Free Space Optics (FSO), is the backbone of leading-edge communication systems that offer high performance and fast speed. The main pitfall of this system is that the optical signal is hindered by the different atmospheric anomalies. As a result, the system performance has been distorted and degraded. Among the different atmospheric anomalies like fog, rain, snow, etc., fog is the main enemy of this system. Using the properly chosen optics at the transmitter and receiver sides and wavelength, the system performance may be increased in diverse weather conditions. In this article, four wavelengths like two Mid Wave Infrared (MWIR) (3400 nm, 4100 nm) and two Short Wave Infrared (SWIR) (1550 nm & 2000 nm), 27 dBm optical peak power, the OOK modulation technique, 10 MHz modulation bandwidth, 10-7 BER, 2 km optical wireless link distance have been considered. From the theoretical simulation results, it has been initiated that MWIR optical sources (like 4100 nm and 3400 nm) contribute 72.22 dB, and 71.27 dB link margin at adverse atmospheric anomalies respectively, whereas SWIR Optical sources like 1550 nm & 2000 nm furnish 67.70 dB, 68.50 dB link margin respectively for 2 km link distance. The 4100 nm wavelength Laser source performs better in different atmospheric anomalies and provides a better pointing error angle in clear, as well as adverse weather conditions, compared to other wavelengths. © 2024 Old City Publishing, Inc.

The Message Passing Interface (MPI) is a widely accepted standard for parallel computing on distributed ***, MPI implementations can contain defects that impact the reliability and performance of parallelapplications. Detecting and correcting these defects is crucial, yet there is a lack of published models specificallydesigned for correctingMPI defects. To address this, we propose a model for detecting and correcting MPI defects(DC_MPI), which aims to detect and correct defects in various types of MPI communication, including blockingpoint-to-point (BPTP), nonblocking point-to-point (NBPTP), and collective communication (CC). The defectsaddressed by the DC_MPI model include illegal MPI calls, deadlocks (DL), race conditions (RC), and messagemismatches (MM). To assess the effectiveness of the DC_MPI model, we performed experiments on a datasetconsisting of 40 MPI codes. The results indicate that the model achieved a detection rate of 37 out of 40 codes,resulting in an overall detection accuracy of 92.5%. Additionally, the execution duration of the DC_MPI modelranged from 0.81 to 1.36 s. These findings show that the DC_MPI model is useful in detecting and correctingdefects in MPI implementations, thereby enhancing the reliability and performance of parallel applications. TheDC_MPImodel fills an important research gap and provides a valuable tool for improving the quality ofMPI-basedparallel computing systems.

Decision making framework for heterogeneous QoS information: an application to cloud service selection

In recent times, appropriate decision-making in challenging and critical situations has been very well supported by multicriteria decision-making (MCDM) methods. The technique for order of preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) is the most widely used MCDM method for solving decision problems. However, it restricts decision-makers to use only one type of Quality of Service (QoS) information, and it suffers from the rank reversal problem. Restriction to only one type of QoS makes the decision problems more challenging, as it restricts the decision-makers freedom. Further, the rank reversal problem makes the decision result unreliable. To address these issues of TOPSIS, we have proposed a reliable rank reversal robust modular TOPSIS (RMo-TOPSIS). RMo-TOPSIS allows crisp, interval, fuzzy, intuitionistic and neutrosophic fuzzy QoS metrics. It does not suffer from the rank reversal problem. Cloud computing provides computing services on-demand basis without involving maintenance by its users. The availability of many cloud service providers and their services makes cloud service selection a challenging problem. To validate RMo-TOPSIS, we select the cloud service selection consisting of different types of QoS metrics as an application. Experiments on cloud service selection show consistency and accuracy in results obtained by RMo-TOPSIS and its robustness against rank reversal. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature.

Equivalent circuit models for fuel cell stacks as well as for the series connection of battery cells are characterized by multiple series-connected RC sub-networks. In practical applications, for example, when aiming at the aging detection and monitoring of the individual cells in a fuel cell stack, it is desired to estimate the individual state variables of each of these series-connected cells. The same holds true for battery management systems that are dedicated to the state of charge (resp., voltage) equalization in a series connection of multiple battery cells. However, the pure knowledge of the current through this series connection as well as the sum over all terminal voltages is insufficient to make the overall system model fully observable. To efficiently observe the state variables in each of the series-connected subsystems, we aim at avoiding the measurement of the voltages of each individual fuel (resp., battery) cell. Instead, this paper presents a systematic sensor switching strategy which allows for estimating the individual state variables of all series-connected subsystems in an Unscented Kalman Filter framework. Simulation results are presented to compare the achievable estimation accuracy with a scenario in which all cell (resp., terminal) voltages were measured simultaneously. © 2023 IEEE.

Apache Storm is a distributed processing engine that can reliably process unbounded streams of data for real-time applications. While recent research activities mostly focused on devising a resource allocation and task scheduling algorithm to satisfy high performance or low latency requirements of Storm applications across a distributed and multi-core system, finding a solution that can optimize the energy consumption of running applications remains an important research question to be further explored. In this article, we present a controlling strategy for CPU throttling that continuously optimize the level of consumed energy of a Storm platform by adjusting the voltage and frequency of the CPU cores while running the assigned tasks under latency constraints defined by the end-users. The experimental results running over a Storm cluster with 4 physical nodes (total 24 cores) validates the effectiveness of proposed solution when running multiple compute-intensive operations. In particular, the proposed controller can keep the latency of analytic tasks, in terms of 99th latency percentile, within the quality of service requirement specified by the end-user while reducing the total energy consumption by 18% on average across the entire Storm platform. © 2021 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Residential and commercial buildings are responsible for approximately 35% of carbon emissions in industrialized countries. Making buildings more efficient and sustainable is, therefore, a fundamental step toward a low-carbon energy society. A key to achieving sustainability is by leveraging on energy storage systems and smart technologies to switch between energy carriers in order to optimize environmental impact. However, the research on energy management in buildings has mostly focused on its economic aspect, overlooking the environmental dimension. Additionally, the concept of energy system flexibility has been mostly proposed as the ability to shift demand over time or, at most, to curtail it, aiming at reducing the system’s operating costs. We propose a multi-energy multi-objective scheduling model to optimally manage the supply, demand, and interchange of multiple energy carriers, based on dynamic price and carbon emission signals. Our holistic and integrated approach is applied to a group of 200 smart homes with varying thermal and electric loads, and equipped with different types of smart technologies. The effectiveness of the approach in reducing the home carbon footprint, while remunerating the users, is evaluated using historical and statistical data of three European countries. © 2022, The Author(s).

Due to the limited resources of edge networks, the heterogeneity of user content requests, high-cost caching from direct resource hits, and redundancy in resource retention time hinder system performance. Traditional caching methods based on learning and popularity tend to encounter data skew when handling vehicle requests, leading to untimely cache data updates. To address these issues, this paper proposes an efficient edge cooperative caching strategy with recommendation awareness. Firstly, a time series prediction model based on a multi-dense multilayer perceptron is designed. This model segments historical request information into sub-sequence level slivers to enhance positional correlations between information, predicting user requests through historical time series and covariates. Secondly, to optimize cache utilization, comprehensively considers user mobility and contribution to enable recommendation awareness. Additionally, an optimized lifecycle is introduced to design a cache replacement strategy. Simulation experiments demonstrate that, compared to caching schemes based on content popularity and deep reinforcement learning, the proposed method achieves lower caching costs and higher cache hit rates. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Fractional equivalent circuit models have been used in numerous publications to represent long-term memory phenomena of the charging/discharging behavior of Lithium-ion batteries. However, despite the fact that fractional models allow for capturing (infinite horizon) memory properties, the same feature also complicates the numerical evaluation. This is especially critical in cases, in which state estimation procedures are implemented that need to be executed in real time. For this type of applications, it is necessary that the execution time in each time step is bounded a-priori and that it does not grow over time. For that purpose, classical simulation approaches exploit, for example, Grünwald-Letnikov schemes with a finite length of previous state information. However, truncating the memory window without considering the arising errors may lead to wrong state estimates. This is especially critical if interval observers are designed which are meant to include the sets of reachable states with certainty.

With the deep integration of cyber tools, control algorithms are increasingly employed in cyber-physical energy systems to enhance management, cost efficiency, and robustness. Effective demand load management is crucial in cyber-physical energy systems as it directly impacts operational costs. Failure to adequately manage spiky or seasonal demand loads can lead to significant expenses on monthly utility bills. In this study, we propose AMPAMOD, a randomized online algorithm with machine-learned advice, to optimize battery operations and mitigate highly dynamic peak loads. AMPAMOD utilizes limited advice from machine learning algorithms to guide our online algorithm and ensure cost-effective peak load management. The theoretical analysis shows that our solution has minimal advice complexity, a linear computational cost, and an improved competitive ratio. Finally, we conduct extensive trace-driven experiments on real-world datasets. AMPAMOD achieves a peak shaving success rate of over 90%, outperforming baselines by at least 50%. These experimental results confirm theoretical findings and demonstrate the potential of AMPAMOD. © 2023 IEEE.

Effect of MIMO scheme on MWIR FSO link & comparison with SWIR wavelength in the presence of different visibility and strong turbulence circumstances

In this article, the authors analyse the performance of the "multiple input multiple output (MIMO)"technique on a free space optical (FSO) communication link using the mid wavelength infrared (MWIR) and commonly used short wavelength infrared (SWIR) in the presence of various visibility conditions like clear weather, light haze, dense haze, fog, etc., and strong turbulence regime. A 5km link range has been considered with different diversity MIMO schemes. The performance analysis has been made for both wavelengths in terms of bit error rate (BER) and link outage probability. As the MIMO diversity is increased, the performance has been improved compared to the single input single output (SISO) scheme. In the presence of foggy conditions and higher turbulence strength, the MWIR wavelength works properly, whereas the SWIR wavelength has not worked for the same signal to noise (SNR) ratio and the same link distance. © 2023 Walter de Gruyter GmbH, Berlin/Boston.
