MalPacDetector: An LLM-Based Malicious NPM Package Detector

The Node Package Manager ( npm) registry contains millions of JavaScript packages widely shared between worldwide developers. However, npm has also been abused by attackers to spread malicious packages, highlighting the importance of detecting malicious npm packages. Existing malicious npm package detectors suffer from, among other things, high false positives and/or high false negatives. In this paper, we propose a novel Malicious npm Package Detector (MalPacDetector), which leverages Large Language Model (LLM) to automatically and dynamically generate features (rather than asking experts to manually define them). To evaluate the effectiveness of MalPacDetector and existing detectors, we construct a new npm package dataset, which overcomes the weaknesses of existing datasets (e.g., a small number of examples and a high repetition rate of malicious fragments). The experimental results show that MalPacDetector outperforms existing detectors by achieving a false positive rate of 1.3% and a false negative rate of 7.5%. In particular, MalPacDetector detects 39 previously unknown malicious packages, which are confirmed by the npm security team.

ChatGPT, an AI-based chatbot, offers coherent and useful replies based on analysis of large volumes of data. In this article, leading academics, scientists, distinguish researchers and engineers discuss the transformative effects of ChatGPT on modern education. This research discusses ChatGPT capabilities and its use in the education sector, identifies potential concerns and challenges. Our preliminary evaluation shows that ChatGPT perform differently in different subject areas including finance, coding, maths, and general public queries. While ChatGPT has the ability to help educators by creating instructional content, offering suggestions and acting as an online educator to learners by answering questions, transforming education through smartphones and IoT gadgets, and promoting group work, there are clear drawbacks in its use, such as the possibility of producing inaccurate or false data and circumventing duplicate content (plagiarism) detectors where originality is essential. The often reported "hallucinations" within GenerativeAI in general, and also relevant for ChatGPT, can render its use of limited benefit where accuracy is essential. What ChatGPT lacks is a stochastic measure to help provide sincere and sensitive communication with its users. Academic regulations and evaluation practices used in educational institutions need to be updated, should ChatGPT be used as a tool in education. To address the transformative effects of ChatGPT on the learning environment, educating teachers and students alike about its capabilities and limitations will be crucial. © 2023 The Authors

Machine learning for education is an emerging discipline where a model is developed based on training data to make predictions on students’ performance. The main aim is to identify students who would have difficulty in their learning and to take precautionary measures to help them. In this paper, we conduct a comparative analysis of the most used machine learning classification models in the literature. We evaluate the performance of the models in terms of accuracy, F-measure, and execution time using two real-life education datasets. The performance of the models is data-driven. We give insights into the models’ performance and advise on the best model to use accordingly. E3-UAV: An Edge-based Energy-Efficient Object Detection System for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles

Motivated by the advances in deep learning techniques, the application of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV)-based object detection has proliferated across a range of fields, including vehicle counting, fire detection, and city monitoring. While most existing research studies only a subset of the challenges inherent to UAV-based object detection, there are few studies that balance various aspects to design a practical system for energy consumption reduction. In response, we present the E3-UAV, an edge-based energyefficient object detection system for UAVs. The system is designed to dynamically support various UAV devices, edge devices, and detection algorithms, with the aim of minimizing energy consumption by deciding the most energy-efficient flight parameters (including flight altitude, flight speed, detection algorithm, and sampling rate) required to fulfill the detection requirements of the task. We first present an effective evaluation metric for actual tasks and construct a transparent energy consumption model based on hundreds of actual flight data to formalize the relationship between energy consumption and flight parameters. Then we present a lightweight energy-efficient priority decision algorithm based on a large quantity of actual flight data to assist the system in deciding flight parameters. Finally, we evaluate the performance of the system, and our experimental results demonstrate that it can significantly decrease energy consumption in real-world scenarios. Additionally, we provide four insights that can assist researchers and engineers in their efforts to study UAV-based object detection further. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Uncertainty Quantification (UQ) is vital for decision makers as it offers insights into the potential reliability of data and model, enabling more informed and risk-aware decision-making. Graphical models, capable of representing data with complex dependencies, are widely used across domains. Existing sampling-based UQ methods are unbiased but cannot guarantee convergence and are time-consuming on large-scale graphs. There are fast UQ methods for graphical models with closed-form solutions and convergence guarantee but with uncertainty underestimation. We propose LinUProp, a UQ method that utilizes a novel linear propagation of uncertainty to model uncertainty among related nodes additively instead of multiplicatively, to offer linear scalability, guaranteed convergence, and closed-form solutions without underestimating uncertainty. Theoretically, we decompose the expected prediction error of the graphical model and prove that the uncertainty computed by LinUProp is the generalized variance component of the decomposition. Experimentally, we demonstrate that LinUProp is consistent with the sampling-based method but with linear scalability and fast convergence. Moreover, LinUProp outperforms competitors in uncertainty-based active learning on four real-world graph datasets, achieving higher accuracy with a lower labeling budget.

An insider is a person or software that possesses positive authorization to access the asset(s) of an enterprise. In recent years, security incidents perpetrated by enterprise insiders have increased considerably. Enterprises attempt to mitigate such threats by implementing controls intuitively, on an ad-hoc basis. However, such intuitive control implementation is both time-consuming, as well as prone to errors, leading to insecure enterprise systems. The paper attempts to address this issue by proposing a structured methodology for the selection of relevant security controls. The technique is to model insider threats and security controls, and match their constituent components against each other. The proposed methodology has been illustrated with suitable examples.

Mobile Edge computing (MEC) is a new computing paradigm that enables cloud computing and information technology (IT) services to be delivered at the network’s edge. By shifting the load of cloud computing to individual local servers, MEC helps meet the requirements of ultralow latency, localized data processing, and extends the potential of Internet of Things (IoT) for end-users. However, the crosscutting nature of MEC and the multidisciplinary components necessary for its deployment have presented additional security and privacy concerns. Fortunately, Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms can cope with excessively unpredictable and complex data, which offers a distinct advantage in dealing with sophisticated and developing adversaries in the security industry. Hence, in this paper we comprehensively provide a survey of security and privacy in MEC from the perspective of AI. On the one hand, we use European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) MEC reference architecture as our based framework while merging the Software Defined Network (SDN) and Network Function Virtualization (NFV) to better illustrate a serviceable platform of MEC. On the other hand, we focus on new security and privacy issues, as well as potential solutions from the viewpoints of AI. Finally, we comprehensively discuss the opportunities and challenges associated with applying AI to MEC security and privacy as possible future research directions. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. In intelligent transportation systems (ITSs), incorporating pedestrians and vehicles in-the-loop is crucial for developing realistic and safe traffic management solutions. However, there is falls short of simulating complex real-world ITS scenarios, primarily due to the lack of a digital twin implementation framework for characterizing interactions between pedestrians and vehicles at different locations in different traffic environments. In this article, we propose a surveillance video assisted federated digital twin (SV-FDT) framework to empower ITSs with pedestrians and vehicles in-the-loop. Specifically, SVFDT builds comprehensive pedestrian-vehicle interaction models by leveraging multi-source traffic surveillance videos. Its architecture consists of three layers: (i) the end layer, which collects traffic surveillance videos from multiple sources;(ii) the edge layer, responsible for semantic segmentation-based visual understanding, twin agent-based interaction modeling, and local digital twin system (LDTS) creation in local regions;and (iii) the cloud layer, which integrates LDTSs across different regions to construct a global DT model in realtime. We analyze key design requirements and challenges and present core guidelines for SVFDT’s system implementation. A testbed evaluation demonstrates its effectiveness in optimizing traffic management. Comparisons with traditional terminal-server frameworks highlight SV-FDT’s advantages in mirroring delays, recognition accuracy, and subjective evaluation. Knowledge Tracing (KT) is a critical but challenging problem for many educational applications. As an essential part of educational psychology, the propagated influence among pedagogical concepts (i.e., learning transfer) is important for optimizing KT tasks. However, existing KT methods only consider the positive learning transfer and neglect the negative learning transfer. To this end, in this paper, we propose a novel deep knowledge tracing model, called positive and negative Learning Transfers based Knowledge Tracing (LTKT). To the best of our knowledge, LTKT makes the first attempt to concurrently utilize the positive and negative learning transfer relations among concepts to improve KT results. First, LTKT employs a statistical-based approach to construct a learning transfer graph (LTG). Then, LTKT quantifies the impact of an exercise's practice result on the knowledge state of the concept via a direct learning effect component, after which a learning transfer effect component is carefully designed to quantify the impact of the practice result on the knowledge states of neighboring concepts based on the positive and negative learning transfer relations modeled by LTG. We conduct extensive experiments on public real-world datasets, and the experimental results show that LTKT outperforms all state-of-the-art KT methods and has good interpretability. © 2023, The Authors. This paper proposes a concept of low-cost industrial wireless sensor network integrating the power consumption efficient ESP32 chip. The main focus is given on best practices of various sensors integration into Real-Time Operating System (RTOS) of ESP32 devices. The work proposes an architecture for data collection, security and possibility of data analysis. Energy effectiveness is estimated for battery usage in different modes of the chip. The last part of this work presents the conclusions and guidelines for future work. Road map of a distributed modeling framework for plant-wide process monitoring is also introduced.
