Introducing autonomy is a task of paramount importance and is currently investigated in many areas, especially for autonomous cars and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). Most UAVs are still remotely human-controlled. A necessity is to implement on-board solutions, able to work in all weather conditions and at any time. Hence, on this topic, we give an overview of recent advances for vision-based landing of UAVs. A thorough classification of the main recently developed methods is introduced with a discussion of their advantages and disadvantages. The paper presents a new solution for autonomous UAV vision-based landing, focusing on runway detection using a hybrid approach combining multi-image matching, SIFT and object tracking. The results are evaluated and validated using simulated images sampled with the X-Plane 11 flight simulator and real-world videos collected during automated flights performed by the ULTRA vehicle, one of the biggest UAVs in the UK [1]. The statistical analysis from the validation of the proposed approach shows a high level of accuracy around 94.89% in clear weather conditions and real-time computational performance.

The paper describes the energy consumption from the battery based on the current measurements for various cases, i.e., speed (PWL adjustment) and loads. The main purpose of the research is to have additional and reliable information about power consumption and battery life estimation for autonomous guided vehicles (AGV). The authors propose a two-step algorithm. In the first step, a linear classifier was proposed. Then, the KNN classifier was tested; however, it did not give satisfactory results, so it was finally decided to use the random forest to estimate the load and PWL. The time domain current measurement is evaluated, and the beforementioned algorithms process the selected statistical measures. It has been proven that a two-step algorithm allows for achieving high accuracy. Based on the current observation, the paper is a good starting point for further investigation of the AGV because it is usually implemented in the AGV – so it does not require additional hardware. Moreover, it can lead to better energy management and increase battery lifetime.

Visible Light Communications (VLC) are a new wireless communications technology that benefits from numerous advantages. Nevertheless, due to particular limitations, its deployment is still not in sight. A specific VLC challenge is establishing the link when the transmitter needs to provide light dimming function or even when it is in off-state. To achieve this goal, a new indoor VLC prototype was developed and experimentally evaluated. The VLC transmitter has been developed as part of the indoor lighting infrastructure, whereas the VLC receiver is being developed as part of a smart backpack for visually impaired persons’ assistance. The prototype has been evaluated in light dimming conditions, going down to 1% duty cycle, which is perceived by the human eye as almost in an off-state. The experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of the concept, as a BER lower than $10^{-6}$ can be maintained while decreasing the light intensity down to the point where the light seems totally off.

In industrial settings, querying data streams from Internet of Things (IoT) devices benefits from utilizing elastic criteria to enhance the interpretability of the current state of the monitored environment. Fuzzy sets provide this elasticity, enabling the aggregation and representation of similar values in a human-comprehensible manner. However, many sensor signals exhibit temporal oscillations, leading to varying interpretations of the signal based on its current trend (rising or falling). This hysteresis in signal (and subsequently of the production device) interpretation inspired us to introduce this phenomenon into data stream processing, resulting in the novel concept of hysteretic fuzzy sets. This article demonstrates how fuzzy searching and grouping can be applied to IoT sensor signals in flexible Big Data stream processing on Apache Kafka. We illustrate the impact of data stream querying with KSQL queries involving fuzzy sets (encompassing fuzzy filtering of data stream events, fuzzy transformation of data stream attributes, fuzzy grouping, and joining) on the flexibility of executed operations and computational resources utilized by the Kafka processing engine. Finally, our experiments with hysteretic fuzzy sets while analyzing sensor signals in power plants demonstrate that this novel approach effectively reduces the number of alarms while monitoring the state of the production machine.

Nowadays, the food supplement industry has grown considerably, mainly due to the orientation of consumers towards more natural products. In Romania, the Institute of Food Bioresources notified over 900 food supplements in 2020 and over 1500 in 2019. Unfortunately, the use of these supplements, although healthy, is problematic due to environmental pollution. The packaging used, often disposable, is highly polluting, multilayer, difficult to sort and impossible to recycle. This paper presents a viable option for packaging food supplements: completely edible materials, obtained from biopolymers, with rosemary, thyme and oregano essential oils addition. Agar, sodium alginate, and glycerol were used to obtain the films. The essential oils were added in different volumes. The samples were tested in order to evaluate the physical and optical characteristics and to determine solubility. The solubility characteristics are important in this sense as these films are recommended as packaging for food supplements and can be consumed with them, by dissolving in liquids with a temperature of about 30 degrees. The addition of essential oil has improved the physical characteristics of the films. Thus, they presented a more pleasant smell, taste and color, improved transmittance, and reduced roughness. The films were also tested microbiologically, and no microorganisms such as bacteria, yeasts and molds developed on the samples. The addition of essential oil increased the values of the film transmittance (from 4.22% in the case of the control sample, to 15.98% in the case of the sample with 25 microliters of oregano essential oil). Similarly, the opacity values decreased with the addition of essential oils (from 28.254 to 17.24 for the sample with a lower volume of oregano essential oil in the composition). According to microstructure images and micro topographies, films with the addition of oregano essential oil are more homogeneous, more uniform and with lower roughness values. The
