Data augmentation has shown to be effective for improving generalization performance of deep neural networks, especially in the regime of high noise and scarce data. However, this approach has not been applied to industrial aging processes (IAP) forecasting, where observed data are multimodal time-series, and therefore existing augmentation methods are not suitable for data generation. In this paper, we propose Seq-MVAE, a generative architecture that can generate complex time-series data consisting of multiple heterogeneous modalities. Seq-MVAE is capable of conditional generation, i.e., Seq-MVAE learns the joint distribution across the modalities, and allows users to generate a part of the modalities that are coherent with the other (given) modalities. This enables not only missing value imputation but also conditional generation, which is known to be crucial for data augmentation. We evaluate the generative performance and other aspects of Seq-MVAE on an artificial dataset generated based designed to simulate an industrial aging process, and show the effectiveness of data augmentation by Seq-MVAE on a real-world dataset acquired from an industrial plant. © 2025 The Authors

Real-time systems usually incorporate a wide variety of challenges: A control engineer, for example, aims for the highest possible control quality achievable. Here, one key element is to minimise the uncertainty of the measurements. This, to put it simple, is the noise of sensor data, which has a negative effect on control. Although measurement uncertainty is well treated in control theory, it is usually ignored in common real-time architectures where temporal properties are the prevalent criteria. Consequently, the communication between control engineers and real-time specialists is rather one way, revolving around deadlines and sampling periods. However, on closer examination, many real-time properties are derived from the measurement uncertainty aspired by the control engineer. Conversely, temporal variations, virtually inevitable in practice, can be represented as measurement uncertainty as well. Tackling the measurement uncertainty should therefore be an interdisciplinary task: The control system respects the actual run-time conditions instead of estimating them. Likewise, the real-time system considers measurement uncertainty rather than blindly sticking to deadlines. In this paper we present an uncertainty-centric approach to leverage measurement uncertainty in real-time architectures, not only at design time but also at run-time. Using measurement uncertainty as an explicit interface minimises the gap between real-time specialists and control engineers and facilitates a modular and flexible system design. Our preliminary results are promising and show the ease of use and the applicability to existing systems. © 2012 IEEE.

From an ecological and economic perspective, saving energy is an important factor for the design of today's computing systems. However, building energy-efficient systems is a challenging task for system designers. It requires exact knowledge about the system's components (i.e., software and hardware components) and it is not immediately obvious how the energy demand of a system can be improved. This paper presents energy-aware programming techniques that help developers at optimizing the energy demand of software. Such techniques address sensibility aspects (i.e., energy awareness) and provide optimization suggestions to developers. The paper further discusses responsibility aspects that emerge from the advent of energy-aware programming techniques.

Type-safe high-level languages such as Java have not yet found their way into the domain of deeply embedded systems, even though numerous attempts have been made to make these languages cost attractive. One major challenge that remains is the huge existing code base in many industries. Completely reengineering this code base is not viable for cost and time reasons. We present an approach that allows to isolatedly combine legacy software components and safe software components in an embedded system using the two most common communication idioms found in this domain. Our approach allows the developer to freely choose between hardware- and software-based isolation mechanisms. We demonstrate the feasibility of our approach by porting a non-trivial part of a real-world, hard real-time embedded avionics application. Our results show that the cost of this mixed-mode operation is on the same scale as the pure operation. © 2011 IEEE.

In this paper we present a prototype of the RTSC - the Real-Time System Compiler. The RTSC is a compiler-based tool that leverages the migration from event-triggered to time-triggered real-time systems. For this purpose, it uses an abstraction called Atomic Basic Blocks (ABBs) which is used to capture all relevant dependencies of the event-triggered system in a so-called ABB-graph. This ABB-graph is transformed by the RTSC and finally mapped to a statically computed schedule that could be executed by standard time-triggered real-time operating systems. Moreover, we demonstrate the applicability of our approach and the operation of our prototype by transforming the event-triggered implementation of a real-world embedded system into a trime-triggered equivalent. © 2010 IEEE.

Expressing and analysing data dependency in multimedia streams is promising, since content-aware policies at a transport level would benefit from such services. In this paper we present a format-independent dependency model aimed at specifying, validating and reasoning about structural dependency in multimedia streams. Based on this model, we developed a universal dependency description language and a dependency validation service to serve as an infrastructure for content-aware transport layers. Driven by application knowledge, this special form of a cross-layer design enables lower layers to reason about the impact of data loss and drops during transmission while being unaware of the real data *** outline, how this infrastructure can be used to build content-aware error protection policies and explain how applications need to specify dependency and prepare media streams in order to gain benefits from those policies. While costs and benefits of a dependency model are only quantifiable in conjunction with special policies, we report on the general worst-case costs of our model here. Copyright 2006 ACM.

WinPEPSY-QNS is a tool for the easy construction of queueing network models and the evaluation of the performance measures. A graphical and a textual editor can be used for the construction process. The performance measures of the models can be derived by several analysis methods. For product-form networks the mean value analysis (MVA), the method of Jackson, and the method for BCMP networks are implemented. For non-product-form networks the methods of Marie or Chylla can be used. The state space based analysis is provided by a discrete event simulation and solvers for continuous time Markov chains. Some important non-Markovian distributions can be approximated by phase-type distributions. For large Markov chains an efficient solver has been implemented, based on multi-valued decision diagrams and a new approximation method for the stationary analysis.

In the domain of safety-critical embedded and cyber-physical systems, software-based redundancy is generally understood as an effective and cheap approach to improve reliability. Especially redundant execution in terms of triple modular redundancy is a well-known solution. However, triple modular redundancy (TMR) leaves unprotected single points of failure (SPOFs), such as the voter, which have to be carefully considered in all safety considerations. We present Combined Redundancy (CoRed), a holistic approach that hardens safety-critical parts of a system against soft-errors, while effectively eliminating the vulnerability caused by SPOFs. CoRed leverages redundant execution in combination with encoded processing to tackle the unprotected voting and data distribution. Its implementation does not require specific knowledge about the application and can be easily integrated into existing projects. We evaluated CoRed in a realistic setting using a quad rotor helicopter and provide experimental evidence for soft-error resistance and comparable low resource demand. In our experimental comparison plain TMR left more than seven percent of failures undetected, whereas CoRed was able to eliminate all silent data corruptions while inducing an overhead of just seven percent. © 2012 IEEE.

As control applications are particularly sensitive to timing variations, the Quality of Control (QoC) is degraded by varying execution conditions of the underlying real-time system. In particular, transitions between different execution or environmental conditions pose a significant issue as they may impact the QoC unexpectedly. So far, the QoC is usually evaluated either in a stationary, timeinvariant way, which cannot analyze said transitions, or by simulation, which becomes ineficient when confronted with random influencing factors. In this paper, we propose a new perspective on QoC evaluation for modern, adaptive real-time systems with varying timing conditions. For this, we present a time-variant stochastic assessment approach that incorporates the effects mentioned before. Our results demonstrate that adaptive scheduling and runtime behavior considerably impacts the QoC. At the same time, the proposed scheme significantly outperforms a traditional simulation. © 2018 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

Quadrotor helicopters are micro air vehicles with vertical take-off and landing capabilities controlled by varying the rotation speed of four fixed pitch propellers. Due to their rather simple mechanical design they have grown to popularity as platform for various research projects. Despite most of them being individually highly successful, they are typically tailored to a specific purpose making it hard to utilise them for further research and education. In this paper, we present the novel design of the I4Copter quadrotor. It has been developed to provide a stable demonstration quadrotor platform for various kinds of research and education projects targeting cross-field challenges in real-time and embedded systems, distributed systems, robotics and cybernetics. The modular and open architecture of our platform allows an application- specific, fine-grained extension, adaption and replacement of software and hardware components. The safe extensibility is supported by strict temporal and spatial isolation between the software modules. We validated our approach by two distinct cross-field use cases: an evaluation platform for modularised control algorithms enabling trajectory tracking and an implementation that is resilient to transient hardware errors. © 2011 ACM.
