The objective of the 13th edition of Ph Doctoral Students in Object-Oriented systems workshop (PHDOOS) was to offer an opportunity for PhD students to meet and share their research experiences, and to discover commonalities in research and student ship. In this way, the participants may receive insightful comment about their research, learn about related work and initiate future research collaborations. So, PHDOOS is a gauge to detect hot spots in current lines of research and new avenues of work in objects-oriented concepts. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

This paper describes a novel approach to fault-tolerance in distributed object-based systems. It uses the fragmented-object model to integrate replication mechanisms into distributed applications. This approach enables the use of customised code on a per-object basis to access replica groups and to manage consistency. The addition of fault tolerance to the infrastructure has only little overhead, is fully transparent for clients, and does not require internal modifications to the existing middleware. Semantic annotations at the interface level allow the developer to customise the provision of fault tolerance. Operations can be marked as read-only to allow an execution with weaker ordering semantics or as parallelisable to allow true multithreaded execution. A code-generation tool is provided to automatically produce object-specific fragment code for client access and for replica consistency management, taking into account the annotations, the interface specification, and the non-replicated implementation. A further contribution of our code-generation approach is the support of deterministic multithreading in replicated objects. © IFIP International Federation for Information Processing 2006.

In this paper we present a prototype of the RTSC - the Real-Time System Compiler. The RTSC is a compiler-based tool that leverages the migration from event-triggered to time-triggered real-time systems. For this purpose, it uses an abstraction called Atomic Basic Blocks (ABBs) which is used to capture all relevant dependencies of the event-triggered system in a so-called ABB-graph. This ABB-graph is transformed by the RTSC and finally mapped to a statically computed schedule that could be executed by standard time-triggered real-time operating systems. Moreover, we demonstrate the applicability of our approach and the operation of our prototype by transforming the event-triggered implementation of a real-world embedded system into a trime-triggered equivalent.

Determinism is mandatory for replicating distributed objects with strict consistency guarantees. Multithreaded execution of method invocations is a source of nondeterminism, but helps to improve performance and avoids deadlocks that nested invocations can cause in a single-threaded execution model. This paper contributes a novel algorithm for deterministic thread scheduling based on the interception of synchronisation statements. It assumes that shared data are protected by mutexes and client requests are sent to all replicas in total order; requests are executed concurrently as long as they do not issue potentially conflicting synchronisation operations. No additional communication is required for granting locks in a consistent order in all replicas. In addition to reentrant mutex locks, the algorithm supports condition variables and time-bounded wait operations. An experimental evaluation shows that, in some typical usage patterns of distributed objects, the algorithm is superior to other existing approaches

Type-safe high-level languages such as Java have not yet found their way into the domain of deeply embedded systems, even though numerous attempts have been made to make these languages cost attractive. One major challenge that remains is the huge existing code base in many industries. Completely reengineering this code base is not viable for cost and time reasons. We present an approach that allows to isolatedly combine legacy software components and safe software components in an embedded system using the two most common communication idioms found in this domain. Our approach allows the developer to freely choose between hardware- and software-based isolation mechanisms. We demonstrate the feasibility of our approach by porting a non-trivial part of a real-world, hard real-time embedded avionics application. Our results show that the cost of this mixed-mode operation is on the same scale as the pure operation.

Finding a barrier-free accessible path through the built environment is necessary for wheelchair users. Researchers have identified the effect of surface vibration on the health of wheelchair users and proposed various solutions to identify and annotate mobility barriers. However, the effects of surface-induced vibration on accessibility are yet to be investigated. In order to address this problem, we present the WheelShare system, which uses machine learning to identify surfaces and curbs from vibration captured by accelerometer and gyroscope sensors (both smartphone and wearable device). WheelShare allows users to share their collected data via crowdsourcing. Based on this surface-specific vibration, we recognize 32 different surfaces found across the built environment (in Austria, China, France, Germany, India, and the USA for 32 human subjects) with an accuracy of 97.5%. The recognized surfaces are then grouped into different categories based on their characteristics. Our novel contributions in this article include the following. 1) We have developed a machine-learning-enabled surface recognition system that uses sensor data to capture surface-induced vibration patterns. 2) We have tested the robustness of the system for devices with only accelerometer data (such as low-end smartphones) and achieved an accuracy of 91.6%. 3) We have deployed our prototype WheelShare system for real-time surface classification in new sites that are unseen in training and testing and successfully recognized the surface characteristics. © 2020 IEEE.

In the biotechnology field, the deployment of the Multiple Sequence Alignment (MSA) problem, which is a high performance computing demanding process, is one of the new challenges to address on the new parallel systems. The aim of this problem is to find similar regions on biological sequences. Furthermore, the goal of MSA applications is to align as much sequences as possible with a level of quality that makes the alignment biologically meaningful. An efficiency study of different MSA implementations, based on T-Coffee (one of the most used MSA aligners), has been performed in order to find new optimizations that may improve the average execution time on multi-core systems. We found that the current parallel implementations have some performance issues, affecting negatively the scalability of the process. Finally, the proposed implementation based on the usage of threads in conjunction with a message-passing library is presented, with the aim to optimize the execution of the MSA problem in multi-core-based clusters. © 2012 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC.

WinPEPSY-QNS is a tool for the easy construction of queueing network models and the evaluation of the performance measures. A graphical and a textual editor can be used for the construction process. The performance measures of the models can be derived by several analysis methods. For product-form networks the mean value analysis (MVA), the method of Jackson, and the method for BCMP networks are implemented. For non-product-form networks the methods of Marie or Chylla can be used. The state space based analysis is provided by a discrete event simulation and solvers for continuous time Markov chains. Some important non-Markovian distributions can be approximated by phase-type distributions. For large Markov chains an efficient solver has been implemented, based on multi-valued decision diagrams and a new approximation method for the stationary analysis.

Arithmetic error coding schemes (AN codes) are a well known and effective technique for soft error mitigation. Although coding theory being a rich area of mathematics, their implementation seems to be fairly easy. However, compliance with the theory can be lost easily while moving towards an actual implementation - finally jeopardizing the aspired fault-tolerance characteristics. In this paper, we present our experiences and lessons learned from implementing AN codes in the Cored dependable voter. We focus on the challenges and pitfalls in the transition from maths to machine code for a binary computer from a systems perspective. Our results show, that practical misconceptions (such as the use of prime numbers) and architecture-dependent implementation glitches occur on every stage of this transition. We identify typical pitfalls and describe practical measures to find and resolve them. Our measures eliminate all remaining SDCs in the Cored voter, which is validated by an extensive fault-injection campaign that covers 100 percent of the fault space for 1-bit and 2-bit errors.

Bitcoin was released in 2008 as an electronic peer-to-peer payment system. The aim was to enable financial transactions in an anonymous manner between participating parties. However, Bitcoin is considered a pseudonymous network rather than anonymous, as the identity of the address owner is unknown, but every transaction is permanently stored on the Bitcoin blockchain and can be tracked by anyone. The structure of the blockchain, its transactions, and the Bitcoin network make it possible to deanonymize pseudonyms through various methods such as flow analysis, heuristics, and network traffic observations. Once a connection is established between pseudonyms used in the Bitcoin network and the real world, all previous transactions can be attributed to that identity. In 2021, Taproot was introduced to further increase privacy within the Bitcoin Network by introducing a new address format which will allow transactions to be more indistinguishable from one another. In this paper, we analyze current methods for deanonymizing Bitcoin transactions to understand which parts of the Bitcoin protocol they exploit. In addition, we look at the changes introduced by Taproot and determine the extent to which these changes affect the methods and what assumptions must be made for these methods to remain applicable.
