The ability to maintain functionality in the presence of disturbances is a critical requirement of networked systems. A system satisfies the disturbance decoupling property if, for any additive disturbance signal, there exists a control input such that the system output resulting from the combined disturbance and control signals is equivalent to the output in the absence of any disturbance. In this paper, we present a submodular optimization approach for selecting input nodes to guarantee that the disturbance decoupling property is satisfied. Our approach is based on mapping three known criteria for disturbance decoupling to two sufficient matroid constraints. This mapping implies that the problem of selecting a minimum-size sufficient input set for disturbance decoupling, as well as the problem of selecting a minimum-cost input set, can be solved in polynomial time as matroid intersection problems. Our results are illustrated via simulation study.

Memristor memories provide non-volatile and high density solutions that can overcome some of the challenges faced by CMOS technology. Memristor memories use the memristor as a resistor and depict a logic 1 by a high resistance state and a logic 0 by a low resistance state. Typically, the memristor's resistance range is divided in half, and a state falling in the lower half depicts a logic 0 and the higher half depicts a logic 1. We show in this paper that it is better to use an unequal division of the range to define the resistance state corresponding to a given logic state. We show how this division can be optimized to provide the highest noise margin. © 2014 IEEE.

Driving safety is a top priority when designing intelligent automobiles. In this paper, we present an FPGA-based real-time system for lane departure warning (LDW) and front collision warning (FCW), which requires intensive computation and memory access for high resolution video input from a front-view camera. Our system first converts gray scale video input into desired binary video images by applying Sobel filter, Otsu's threshold binarization and dilation. Hough transform is then applied to detect lanes for LDW. The front vehicles are detected for FCW by searching shadow area on the images. Our experimental results demonstrate the FPGA design is fully functional and it can process about 160 frames per second for 720P video input, which exceeds the real-time processing requirement. © 2014 IEEE.

The continuous demand for high storage capacities in modern electronic systems has made it more than ever important to find memory technologies beyond CMOS that are able to cope with the challenges at the nanoscale while catering to the requirements of high performance and robust operation. Memristors are excellent candidates for post CMOS memories, owing to their nanoscale nature and their programmability and ability to retain their state when turned off. In this paper we present design considerations for memristor memories for robust operation and discuss the trade-off between reading operations, refresh rates, and writing, stemming from the inherent variability of the memristor state when read. © 2014 IEEE.

We perform multi-class classification of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy data of four commercial samples of proteins diluted In phosphate-buffered saline solution at different concentrations: bovine serum albumin, osteopontin, leptin, and insulin-like growth 'actor II. We achieve this by using principal component analysis as a method for dimensionality reduction. In addition, we apply several different classification algorithms (K-nearest neighbor, classification and regression trees, neural networks, support vector machines, adaptive local hyperplane, and linear discriminant classifiers) to perform multi-class classification. We achieve classification accuracies above 98% by using the linear classifier With 21-31 principal components. We obtain the best detection Performance for neural networks, support vector machines, and adaptive local hyperplanes for a range of the number of principal components with no significant differences in performance except 'or that of the linear classifier. With the optimal number of principal components, a simplistic K-nearest classifier still provided acceptable results. Our proposed approach demonstrates that highly accurate automatic classification of complex protein samples from laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy data can be successfully achieved using principal component analysis with a sufficiently large number of extracted features, followed by a wrapper technique to determine the optimal number of principal components. © 2014 Society for Applied Spectroscopy.

Submodular maximization enables efficient approximation of machine learning, networking, and language processing problems. Typically, these problems have been shown to have matroid constraints, which generalize matching and partition conditions. Developing scalable, distributed submodular optimization algorithms that guarantee the same performance as centralized techniques has been an active area of research. In this paper, we address the problem of developing scalable distributed algorithms for submodular maximization with a matroid constraint. Our key step is to construct an auxiliary function from the submodular objective function, and develop distributed exchange-based algorithms for optimizing the auxiliary function. We first introduce a distributed algorithm for maximizing a submodular function with a matroid constraint. We then develop an algorithm for maximizing time-varying submodular functions under partition matroid constraints, which arises in sensor placement and data caching. We prove that both algorithms provide (1-1/e) optimality bounds, and hence achieve the same guarantees as the best centralized algorithms.

Gentry introduced the first plausible fully homomorphic encryption (FHE) scheme, which was considered a major breakthrough in cryptography. Several FHE schemes have been proposed to make FHE more efficient for practical applications since then. The leveled fully homomorphic scheme is among the most well-known schemes. In leveled FHE scheme, large-number matrix-vector multiplication is a crucial part of the encryption algorithm. In this paper, Chinese Remainder Theorem (CRT) is employed to reduce the computational complexity of the large-number element-by-element modular multiplication. The first step is called decomposition, in which each large-number element in the matrix and vector is decomposed into many small words. The next step is vector operation that performs the modular multiplications and additions of the decomposed small words. Finally the matrix-vector multiplication results can be obtained through reconstruction. We compare the CRT-based method with Number Theory Library (NTL), showing the proposed method is about 7.8 times faster when executing on CPU. In addition, it is observed that vector operation takes up to 99.6% of the total computation time and the reconstruction only takes 0.4%. Therefore GPU acceleration is employed to speed up the vector operations. Experiment results show that the GPU implementation of the CRT-based method is 35.2 times faster than the same method implemented on CPU and is 273.6 times faster than the NTL library on CPU.

We consider a distributed parameter estimation problem, in which multiple terminals send messages related to their local observations using limited rates to a fusion center who will obtain an estimate of a parameter related to observations of all terminals. It is well known that if the transmission rates are in the Slepian-Wolf region, the fusion center can fully recover all observations and hence can construct an estimator having the same performance as that of the centralized case. One natural question is whether Slepian-Wolf rates are necessary to achieve the same estimation performance as that of the centralized case. In this paper, we show that the answer to this question is negative. We establish our result by explicitly constructing an asymptotically minimum variance unbiased estimator (MVUE) that has the same performance as that of the optimal estimator in the centralized case while requiring information rates less than the conditions required in the Slepian-Wolf rate region.

The Internet of Things (IoT) could enable the development of cloud multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems where internet-enabled devices can work as distributed transmission/reception entities. We expect that spatial multiplexing with distributed reception using cloud MIMO would be a key factor of future wireless communication systems. In this paper, we first review practical receivers for distributed reception of spatially multiplexed transmit data where the fusion center relies on quantized received signals conveyed from geographically separated receive nodes. Using the structures of these receivers, we propose practical channel estimation techniques for the blockfading scenario. The proposed channel estimation techniques rely on very simple operations at the received nodes while achieving near-optimal channel estimation performance as the training length becomes large. © 2014 IEEE.

The ability to directly image ultrafast phenomena with nanometer spatial resolution is essential to our understanding of local excitation dynamics in nanomaterials and devices. We have developed a new approach to ultrafast scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) that couples terahertz (THz) pulses to the scanning tip of a STM. We have used THz-STM under ambient lab conditions to image ultrafast charging dynamics of a single InAs nanodot on GaAs with 0.5 ps time resolution and 2 nm spatial resolution. We are currently developing THz-STM for operation in ultrahigh vacuum with the goal of imaging ultrafast dynamics on surfaces with atomic resolution.
