Frequency-selective fading channels are encountered in many modern wireless communication systems. In order to combat the intersymbol interference (ISI) introduced by such fading, equalization is required for reliable symbol detection. The maximum-likelihood sequence detector is the optimal equalization scheme;however its implementation complexity increases exponentially with the channel length and thus can be prohibitively high. In this paper, we compare the performance of two practically implementable suboptimal symbol detectors, including the partial response maximum-likelihood (PRML) detector and the partial response belief propagation (PRBP) detector, under frequency-selective fading channels. Both detectors employ a hybrid two-stage scheme, and allow a tradeoff between performance and complexity. The first stage is a partial response equalizer implemented as a linear filter which transforms the original channel impulse response to a target impulse response with reduced ISI. The residual ISI is then cancelled in the second stage using a more sophisticated nonlinear detector. In simulations, we consider a slow fading environment and use the ITU-R 3G channel models. From the numerical results, it is shown that in frequency-selective fading wireless channels, the PRBP detector provides superior performance over both the traditional minimum mean squared error linear equalizer and the PRML detector. Due to the effect of colored noise, the PRML detector in fading wireless channels is not as effective as it is in magnetic recording applications.

Nowadays the deployment of the Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) is under the limelight of the academic community. In a multi-rate data WLAN, the data rate is a function of the distance from the access point (AP). To extend the coverage of the AP to cover a target terminal outside the AP coverage area, relay nodes are deployed between the AP and the target terminal. Therefore, for a given relationship between the throughput and the distance, and a given distance between the access point and the target receiver, there is a minimum number of nodes that provides the maximum throughput to the target receiver. It is always desirable to optimize the deployment from various aspects. These aspects are application-dependent and they range from energy conservation in sensor networks to throughput and coverage maximization in data networks. This paper presents a novel approach to determine the optimal bounds for the Medium Access Control (MAC) throughput at the target receiver in a multi-hop multi-rate wireless data network. We use the principles of linear programming and a model for the physical layer (PHY) throughput-distance relationship to determine the optimal performance bounds for the MAC throughput of a target terminal as a function of distance from the AP and the number of hops. Additionally, we determine the physical locations for the relays to reach the optimal MAC throughput for a target terminal located at a specific distance from the AP.

Severe intersymbol interference (ISI) is one of the main obstacles for reliable signal reception in ATSC DTV systems. Decision feedback equalizers (DFEs) are commonly used to suppress the ISI. However, DFEs may suffer from error propagation due to incorrect symbol decisions from the symbol slicer. This phenomenon deteriorates the performance even more when the post-cursor ISI is strong. In order to reduce error propagation, we present a novel hybrid equalization scheme for ATSC channels. The proposed scheme consists of an adaptive decision feedback sparsening filter (DFSF), and an iterative maximum a posteriori (MAP) equalizer based on the belief propagation (BP) algorithm. In the first stage, instead of removing all the ISI from post cursors, the DFSF employs a modified feedback filter which leaves the strongest post-cursor ISI taps uncorrected. As a result, a long ISI channel is equalized to a sparse channel having only a small number of nonzero taps. In the second stage, a belief propagation algorithm is applied to mitigate the residual ISI. Since the channel is typically time-varying and suffers from Doppler fading, the DFSF is adapted using the least mean square (LMS) algorithm, such that the amplitude and the locations of the nonzero taps of the equalized sparse channel appear to be fixed. As such, the channel appears to be static during the second stage of equalization which consists of the BP detector. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme outperforms the traditional DFE in symbol error rate, under both static channels and dynamic ATSC channels.

This paper proposes an adaptive modulation scheme using rain fading predictions obtained via Kalman filtering in order to mitigate the effects of rain on cognitive radio-based geostationary (GEO) satellites operating in the Ka-band. In the proposed scheme, the need for adaptation is identified prior to the rain attenuation event, allowing for enough time for the transmitter and receiver to reconfigure, which is a requirement when one of the communicating nodes are moving at a certain relative speed. We show that the bit error rate (BER) performance can be improved by two orders of magnitude for a system that accounts for the overall delay when adapting its modulation scheme based on the proposed predictor outputs.

In this paper, we propose a statistical channel model for decode-and-forward relaying vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) with single-input-single-output (SISO) antennas. The proposed model uses a sum-of-sinusoids (SoS) Rician model, which is derived for highway scenarios with line-of-sight (LOS) components, time varying conditions and multipath excess delay. Since the time delay differences between multipath components are considered in this work as opposed to previous studies, the power of channel impulse response is conserved. One of the advantages of the proposed channel model is that it does not depend on parameters such as distance and angle between vehicles, which changes continuously in a highway transmission environment. Using the proposed channel model, we analyze the relay network capacity of a VANET operating in highway traffic conditions. The results show that, the proposed channel model has higher performance relative to previous studies since the model contains the effect of time delay between multipath components.

The invention of deep belief network (DBN) provides a powerful tool for data modeling. The key advantage of DBN is that it is driven by training data only, which can alleviate researchers from the routine of devising explicit models or features for data with complicated distributions. However, as the dimensionality and quantity of data increase, the computing load of training a DBN increases rapidly. Prospectively, the remarkable computing power provided by modern GPU devices can reduce the training time of DBN significantly. As highly efficient computational libraries become available, it provides additional support for GPU based parallel computing. Moreover, GPU server is more affordable and accessible compared with computer cluster or supercomputer. In this paper, we implement a variant of the DBNs, called folded-DBN, on NVIDA's Tesla K20 GPU. In our simulations, two sets of database are used to train the folded-DBNs on both CPU and GPU platforms. Comparing execution time of the fine-tuning process, the GPU implementation results 7 to 11 times speedup over the CPU platform.

Previous works on outdoor traffic sign recognition and classification have been demonstrated useful to the driver assistant system and the possibility to the autonomous vehicles. This motivates our research on the assistance for visual impairment or visual disabled pedestrians in the indoor environment. In this paper, we build an indoor sign database and investigate the recognition and classification for the indoor sign problem. We adopt the classical techniques on extracting the features, including the principle component analysis (PCA), dense scale invariant feature transform (DSIFT), histogram of oriented gradients (HOG), and conduct the state-of-art classification techniques, such as the neural network (NN), support vector machine (SVM) and k-nearest neighbors (KNN). We provide the experimental results on this newly built database and also discuss the insight for the possibility of indoor navigation for the blind or visual-disabled people.

A technique for achieving synchronization in wireless networks using only existing traffic is developed. Prior work has either ignored propagation delay, or has required bidirectional messages consisting of explicitly acknowledged unicast transmissions. We develop an approach using “implicit acknowledgment” that achieves precise consensus synchronization by exploiting the broadcast nature of the wireless medium. This significantly reduces the number of transmissions needed for synchronization throughout the network, and is applicable to networks with unacknowledged multicast and broadcast traffic. Results suggest the technique is effective for precise, low-overhead network synchronization, and numerical results are presented for two particular network configurations.

The Army has researched the concept of utilizing cold spray coating technology as an alternative to the conventional electroplated chromium coating within 20mm gun barrels. This project was undertaken as part of the Army's Toxic Metal Reduction program to remove hexavalent chromium from the manufacturing process, and involves the creation of tantalum-10% tungsten "donor tubes" for explosive bonding to the inner gun barrel. A major concern of any internal coating process (such as the interior of a gun barrel) is the integrity of the final product, since it is not a location that is easily inspected. As such, a nondestructive inspection method was developed, allowing successful evaluation of the interior gun barrel coating. The research involved a high-frequency ultrasonic inspection whereby the elastic waves were transmitted from the exterior. The equipment consisted of contact and immersion probes with center frequencies of ~10 MHz connected to a pulser/receiver system with variable duty cycles. The analog time-amplitude signals were acquired with a high-speed (2 GHz) digitizing oscilloscope and evaluated/stored in a PC. The test arrangement was used to measure the average liner thickness as a function of distance along the barrel. Results comparing well-bonded and delaminated samples were also achieved.

A framework of CAD/CAE integration system and its implementation for dockside container crane are proposed in this paper. First, the system framework based on web technology, software design pattern and service-oriented architecture (SOA) is introduced. Then, requirement input interfaces of Customer-Designer-Interaction (CDI) module are built based on *** multiple-layer Browser/Server (B/S) architecture, core design patterns and .NET WCF Services, and customers can provide specifications of the cranes to designers. Next, CAD and CAE modules are accomplished using multiple-layer architecture, and designers can parametrically create 3D models of the crane structures and conduct explicit dynamic Finite Element Analysis (FEA) on the designed crane structures. SOA based Design-Analysis-Integration (DAI) is developed to maintain consistence between CAD and CAE models by using .Net WCF Service. Last, system management functions such as user interaction, user account and file management are described. Since all the operations are conducted in Web and SOA context, customers and designers are able to participate in the design process at different geographical locations. Copyright © 2014 by ASME.
