In this paper, we propose techniques for combating source selective jamming attacks in tactical cognitive MANETs. Secure, reliable and seamless communications are important for facilitating tactical operations. Selective jamming attacks pose a serious security threat to the operations of wireless tactical MANETs since selective strategies possess the potential to completely isolate a portion of the network from other nodes without giving a clear indication of a problem. Our proposed mitigation techniques use the concept of address manipulation, which differ from other techniques presented in open literature since our techniques employ de-central architecture rather than a centralized framework and our proposed techniques do not require any extra overhead. Experimental results show that the proposed techniques enable communications in the presence of source selective jamming attacks. When the presence of a source selective jammer blocks transmissions completely, implementing a proposed flipped address mechanism increases the expected number of required transmission attempts only by one in such scenario. The probability that our second approach, random address assignment, fails to solve the correct source MAC address can be as small as 10 -7 when using accurate parameter selection.

In this paper, we propose a detection approach for reactive jamming attacks in the tactical wireless ad hoc networks. A significant weakness for all wireless communication systems is a vulnerability to jamming attacks. In the worst case scenario, jammers possess the potential to completely block data transmissions in the wireless network. Since tactical networks are typically utilized in crisis-management and battlefield operations, reliable and secure communications are a critical factor for mission success. Thus, jamming attacks must be detected and mitigated immediately by the wireless network. New approaches for the detection and mitigation of jamming attacks are required, especially for tactical networks based on mobile ad hoc technology where centralized detection algorithms are unusable. We present a novel mechanism to detect jamming in tactical ad hoc networks, which is based on the required number of re-transmission attempts of transmitted packets and packet delivery rate of received packets. Our proposed approach employs several network performance parameters, which differentiates our approach from most existing detection algorithms, since only a single parameter is commonly used as a detection decision. The simulation model of proposed detection algorithm is implemented in ns-3 network simulator.

Software optimization for electrical conductivity imaging in polycrystalline diamond cutters

We previously reported on an electrical conductivity imaging instrument developed for measurements on polycrystalline diamond cutters. These cylindrical cutters for oil and gas drilling feature a thick polycrystalline diamond layer on a tungsten carbide substrate. The instrument uses electrical impedance tomography to profile the conductivity in the diamond table. Conductivity images must be acquired quickly, on the order of 5 sec per cutter, to be useful in the manufacturing process. This paper reports on successful efforts to optimize the conductivity reconstruction routine, porting major portions of it to NVIDIA GPUs, including a custom CUDA kernel for Jacobian computation.

Preestablished secret keys are often used to encrypt and decrypt data in communication systems, including underwater acoustic (UWA) systems. However, once the keys are compromised, the communication is not secure. It is desirable to establish shared secrets in the field. One method is to generate secret keys dynamically using correlated channel measurements, which relies on the randomness in the environment and does not require the secrecy of information exchanged during the process. We explore this concept in UWA channels and lake tests show that secret keys can be dynamically generated based on the channel frequency responses.

We have previously reported on a moisture monitoring technique for high-pressure gaskets. These gaskets seal the cubical pressure cell as well as transmit pressure within it. It is suspected that too high a moisture content in these gaskets increases the chance of explosive decompressions that shorten the life of the press anvils. Our radiofrequency technique nondestructively estimates gasket moisture content in a way that can be deployed at the factory floor. This paper details the design and refinement of our moisture sensor.

Due to their orthogonality and nearly constant pulse widths, Modified Hermite Pulses (MHPs) have shown a great potential to enhance the data rate of UWB communications by creating M-ary or multiple access parallel systems. However, the potential high power dissipation required by the pulse set generation and the frequency shifting has limited their utilization in practice. In this paper, we propose a novel computation-efficient model for MHP set generators. Compared with existing models, the proposed model has made it feasible to design a power-efficient MHP set generator. Utilizing our proposed model along with neuromorphic circuit level implementations, we have developed an ultra-low power architecture for MHP set generation for sub-GHz (0 - 960 MHz) UWB communications. Results from both the mathematical analysis and the design layout simulations illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme for the design of a power-efficient MHP set generator.

In this paper, we present a novel and practical filtering approach for mitigating the effects of out-of-band (OOB) emissions produced by spectrally agile waveforms based on orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM)-type modulation schemes. As opposed to OOB filtering approaches presented in the open literature, which are based on filters employing a finite impulse response (FIR), the approach proposed in this paper employs infinite impulse response (IIR) filters to mitigate OOB emissions while avoiding the issues associated with FIR filters. In order to realize the proposed approach in a programmable wireless system, such as those based on field programmable gate array (FPGA) technology, fixed-point realizations of a family of IIR filters were implemented such that the appropriate filter can be used in real time given a specific transmission scenario and spectral characteristics. Results show that the bit error rate performance of the proposed approach is significantly better than the performance offered by other techniques.

Mobile wearable sensors have demonstrated great potential in a broad range of applications in healthcare and wellness. These technologies are known for their potential to revolutionize the way next generation medical services are supplied and consumed by providing more effective interventions, improving health outcomes, and substantially reducing healthcare costs. Despite these potentials, utilization of these sensor devices is currently limited to lab settings and in highly controlled clinical trials. A major obstacle in widespread utilization of these systems is that the sensors need to be used in predefined locations on the body in order to provide accurate outcomes such as type of physical activity performed by the user. This has reduced users' willingness to utilize such technologies. In this paper, we propose a novel signal processing approach that leverages feature selection algorithms for accurate and automatic localization of wearable sensors. Our results based on real data collected using wearable motion sensors demonstrate that the proposed approach can perform sensor localization with 98.4% accuracy which is 30.7% more accurate than an approach without a feature selection mechanism. Furthermore, utilizing our node localization algorithm aids the activity recognition algorithm to achieve 98.8% accuracy (an increase from 33.6% for the system without node localization).

We present a telerobotics research platform that provides complete access to all levels of control via open-source electronics and software. The electronics employs an FPGA to enable a centralized computation and distributed I/O architecture in which all control computations are implemented in a familiar development environment (Linux PC) and low-latency I/O is performed over an IEEE-1394a (FireWire) bus at speeds up to 400 Mbits/sec. The mechanical components are obtained from retired first-generation da Vinci ® Surgical Systems. This system is currently installed at 11 research institutions, with additional installations underway, thereby creating a research community around a common open-source hardware and software platform.

A method for deriving respiratory rate from smartphone-camera-acquired pulse photoplethysmographic (SCPPG) signal is presented. It combines information from three derived respiration signals based on pulse width, amplitude, and rate variability (PWV, PAV, and PRV). Evaluation is performed over a database containing SCPPG signals recorded from 10 healthy subjects during controlled respiration experiments at rates from 0.2 to 0.6 Hz with a step of 0.1 Hz, using iPhone 4S device. Results suggest that habitual spontaneous respiratory rates (0.2-0.4 Hz) can be estimated from SCPPG signals by PWV and by PRV with low relative error (median of order 0.5% and IQR of order 2%). PWV method maintained its performance at rates up to 0.5 Hz, and the accuracy can be improved by combining it with other methods such as PRV and PAV.
