This article explores the topic involving children with autism, referencing what this condition is about, as well as the hypotheses for approaching the problem based on the literature reviewed. The proposed approach involves the creation of an adequate space with an immersive interactive system based on musical stimuli, and physical exercise to improve their communication, memory, visual and motor capabilities, and eventually potentiate the development of artistic skills. The development of this interactive system includes the development of an avatar that will be animated using Motion Capture technology, so it can interact with the child and accompany him/her while doing the exercises with fluid movements. © 2023 IEEE.

The growing privacy concerns and the communication costs associated with transmitting raw data have resulted in techniques like federated learning, where the machine learning models are trained at the edge nodes, and the parameter updates are shared with a central server. Because communications from the edge nodes are often unreliable, a hierarchical setup involving intermediate helper nodes is considered. The communication links between the edges and the helper nodes are error-prone and are modeled as straggling/failing links. To overcome the issue of link failures, coding techniques are proposed. The edge nodes communicate encoded versions of the model updates to the helper nodes, which pass them on to the master after suitable aggregation. The primary work in this area uses repetition codes and Maximum Distance Separable (MDS) codes at the edge nodes to arrive at the Aligned Repetition Coding (ARC) and Aligned MDS Coding (AMC) schemes, respectively. We propose using vector codes, specifically a family of layered MDS codes parameterized by a variable ?, at the edge nodes. For the proposed family of codes, suitable aggregation strategies at the helper nodes are also developed. At the extreme values of ?, our scheme matches the communication costs incurred by the ARC and AMC schemes, resulting in a graceful transition between these schemes. © 2023 IEEE.

The modulation bandwidth of the Light Emitting Diode (LED) is an essential parameter for visible light communication systems. The crystal orientation of an LED plays an important role in determining the modulation bandwidth. This study has simulated five different crystal orientations-based GaN LEDs to realise the impact of crystal orientations on recombination rates, carrier lifetime, and modulation bandwidth to meet the industry requirements for high-speed visible light communication applications. © 2023 IEEE.

As machine learning algorithms increasingly influence crucial decisions in areas like loan approvals and hiring, understanding human strategic behavior in response to these systems becomes vital. We explore strategic manipulation and improvement actions by individuals facing algorithmic decisions, the algorithm designer's role in shaping these strategic responses, and the fairness implications. We formulate these interactions as a Stackelberg game, where a firm deploys a (fair) classifier, and individuals strategically respond. Unlike previous research, our model incorporates both different costs and stochastic efficacy for manipulation and improvement. The analysis reveals different potential classes of agent responses, and characterizes optimal classifiers. Based on these, we highlight the impact of the firm's anticipation of strategic behavior, identifying cases when a (fair) strategic policy can motivate improvement while reducing manipulation. © 2024 IEEE.

Wind energy conversion system (WECS) is stochastic in nature and has low inertia leading to grid voltage instability, poor reactive power compensation and most importantly fault susceptibility. Variable speed WECS such as the doubly-fed induction generators (DFIG) are well known to reach steady state quickly after fault occurrence without the need for an external reactive power source because of the presence of a back-to-back converter that provides independent control of the active and reactive power unlike in the fixed-speed squirrel cage induction generator (SCIG) counterpart that can’t be stabilized unless an external source of reactive power support is present. However, controlling DFIG is complicated and costly due to complete tripping unlike the fixed-speed generators which doesn’t trip completely when fault occurs. Hence, in this work, a 48-pulse, 3-phase static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) is used to ensure reactive power compensation and fault-ride through (FRT) control of the SCIG against over-voltage emanating from fault occurrence in a grid-connected power system. The goal here is to guarantee voltage stability and fault-ride-through (FRT) control against injected faults within certain time ranges at the point of common coupling (PCC) between the AC source, the load, and the fixed-speed WECS. The numerical simulation shows the fault-ride-through capability of the STATCOM-controlled fixed-speed WECS, good voltage regulation and effective reactive power compensation. © 2024 IEEE.

Data privacy concerns in the power systems sector significantly complicate the sharing and integration of sensitive operational data among various independent entities. This challenge is particularly pronounced when developing system-wide mathematical models, as the reluctance to share sub-system models parametrized by sensitive data hinders effective system analysis and decision-making. To address this issue, this work introduces the application of Physics-Informed Neural Networks (PINNs) to develop surrogate models that accurately replicate power system dynamics without exposing sensitive data, enabling privacy-preserving model sharing. By embedding physical laws into the training process, PINNs utilize both available data and inherent system physics, making them particularly suitable for modeling complex dynamics. We propose a framework for model development, including dataset generation and integration of the physics knowledge during PINN training. As a proof-of-concept, we apply this framework to a simplified Single Machine Infinite Bus (SMIB) system. Case studies demonstrate that the trained PINN model closely follows ground-truth dynamics and consistently achieves higher accuracy compared to generic neural networks, highlighting the potential for accurate, privacy-preserving model sharing and system-wide dynamic simulations in power systems. © 2024 IEEE.

In recent years, there has been a tendency for people to resort to a more sedentary lifestyle, which has only been aggravated by the COVID-19 pandemic and the evermore common remote work policies. This lack of physical activity brings negative health outcomes and can generally be difficult to overcome due to how challenging it can be for a person to find the motivation to adopt a more physically active routine. To address this issue, we propose the use of serious games as an engaging, fun, and highly motivational tool that can aid people in their quest for a healthier lifestyle. We focus on three problem areas: motor control improvement and rehabilitation, post-stroke rehabilitation, and physical activity for general health. There exist multiple solutions for these problems which often require specific equipment that may not be available to the common user. Therefore, we propose a different approach requiring solely a laptop equipped with a camera, thus making it more practical and accessible to the wider public. © 2023 IEEE.

By capturing gaze points and eye movement patterns, eye tracking technology enables researchers to gain insights into visual attention, cognitive processes, and human behavior. Raw eye tracking data is inherently noisy, containing coordinates with occasional invalid entries. Researchers commonly face the challenge of cleaning and refining this data before proceeding to calculate essential eye tracking metrics. Critical preprocessing steps involve filtering out noise, detecting events such as fixations and saccades, and deriving metrics such as fixation duration, saccade amplitude, and more. This paper introduces a tool that provides users with the ability to preprocess data from both Gazepoint and FOVIO eye trackers. The methodology adopted for this line of work is based on Nyström and Holmqvist's (2010) data and velocity-driven algorithm. Preliminary results show the methodology developed as part of this line of work is promising in terms of improved accuracy and reliability in detecting fixations and saccades. Furthermore, this code and its versatile Graphical User Interface (GUI) has been successfully employed in multiple studies. Finally, we present supplementary code for calculating various eye tracking metrics and percent gaze overlap, extending the utility of our tool for in-depth analysis of visual attention and collaborative gaze behavior. © 2024 IEEE.

This paper proposes a multi-scale control scheme aimed at controlling speed, dwell time, and charging time of electric and automated buses performing the transport service on lines where there are no reserved lanes. The proposed control scheme has two layers characterized by different control objectives, level of detail and time scales. The high-level controller periodically solves a multi-objective optimal control problem formalized to ensure an adequate transport service, while the low-level controller, being based on a more accurate description of the bus dynamics and energy consumption, seeks to follow the high-level control actions while taking into account the effective traffic conditions encountered on the line and the effective dynamic behaviour of the bus. The paper concludes with the application to a case study in order to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme. © 2024 IEEE.
