This practice paper introduces the project-based approach of the center for Project-Based Learning within the department of Information technology and electrical engineering of ETH Zürich. This center's approach to education is built around a three-stage education model that includes projects early on in the students' educational journeys, gradually increasing their complexity in alignment with their growing level of experience. This approach ensures students develop both technical expertise and essential professional skills necessary for their engineering careers, scaffolding course work, small scale group projects and interdisciplinary flagship projects. The center is further enhanced by an evidence-based approach to continued improvement, using regular surveys, reflective journals, and research findings to refine course design and supervision. Students have reported high satisfaction levels with the courses, expressing that the projects aided their understanding of future aspirations and helped develop crucial soft skills, notably in collaboration, communication, and presentation. Intelligent traffic control requires accurate estimation of the road states and incorporation of adaptive or dynamically adjusted intelligent algorithms for making the *** this article,these issues are handled by proposing a novel framework for traffic control using vehicular communications and Internet of Things *** framework integrates Kalman filtering and *** smoothing Kalman filtering,our data fusion Kalman filter incorporates a process-aware model which makes it superior in terms of the prediction *** traditional Q-learning,our Q-learning algorithm enables adaptive state quantization by changing the threshold of separating low traffic from high traffic on the road according to the maximum number of vehicles in the junction *** evaluation,the model has been simulated on a single intersection consisting of four roads:east,west,north,and south.A comparison of the developed adaptive quantized Q-learning(AQQL)framework with state-of-the-art and greedy approaches shows the superiority of AQQL with an improvement percentage in terms of the released number of vehicles of AQQL is 5%over the greedy approach and 340%over the state-of-the-art ***,AQQL provides an effective traffic control that can be applied in today’s intelligent traffic system.

This study addresses the critical aspect of data collection within Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs), which consist of autonomous, compact sensor devices deployed to monitor environmental conditions. These networks have limited processing capacity, storage, short-range communication capabilities, and constrained battery power. A primary challenge in WSN s revolves around data gathering, particularly when employing static sinks, leading to premature energy depletion in nodes near these sinks. Integrating mobile collectors introduces the potential for energy conservation by shortening data routes. This article introduces three distinct algorithms for optimizing data collection in WSN s. Our approach involves an in-depth analysis of diverse strategies to mitigate packet collisions and facilitate the retransmission of lost packets. Our findings underscore the considerable impact that packet collisions can exert on the overall network performance during data gathering within wireless sensor networks. Through empirical exploration and analysis, we highlight the significance of these algorithms in enhancing the efficiency, energy conservation, and reliability of data collection processes within WSNs. This research sheds light on these algorithms' vital role in addressing the pressing challenges of data gathering and network performance optimization in wireless sensor networks. © 2024 IEEE.

This paper introduces a theoretical description, force, and torque analysis of a Reaction Control Thruster (RCT) used as an actuator in Attitude Determination and Control Subsystem (ADCS). Mathematical formalization, realization, and implementation are offered to implement the RCT model using Matlab-Simulink. Furthermore, this paper proposes an accurate RCT Simulink model to control the orientation and stabilizes the Geostationary Earth Orbit (GEO) satellite within its orbit. Finally, a comparative analysis is carried out with an existing satellite platform (Eurostar-3000) based on the Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) for the delta velocity (delta-V) parameter. The outcomes of the model simulation validated the effectiveness of the proposed approach. © 2023 Institute of Physics Publishing. All rights reserved.

Orthogonal projections are widely used to determine optimal controllers, filters and approximations. This paper shows that despite their simple theoretical foundation and their regular use in practical applications, the complexity for computing orthogonal projections might be very high. The paper proves that the causal projection on L2 maps computable continuous functions onto not computable functions. Moreover, it is shown that the orthogonal projection associated with the polynomial approximation in L2 shows complexity blowup in the sense that it maps polynomial-time computable continuous functions onto polynomials that are not polynomial-time computable. Finally, it is shown that the coefficients of the Wiener prediction filter for stationary stochastic processes might not be computable in polynomial time, even for smooth and polynomial-time computable spectral densities. © 2024 IEEE.

Visible Light Communication (VLC) is a promising enabling technology for the next-generation wireless networks, as it complements radio-frequency (RF)-based communications by providing wider bandwidth, higher data rates, and immunity to interference from electromagnetic sources. However, due to its unique characteristics, VLC is highly sensitive to the line-of-sight (LoS) blockage. Recently, intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) has been proposed as an innovative solution that dynamically reconfigures the wireless environment. The present contribution proposes a two-stage resource management framework in an indoor VLC system: In the first stage, a maximum possible fairness (MPF) algorithm is presented in order to maximize the fairness amongst the users. In the second stage, deep Q-learning is exploited in order to maximize the overall spectral efficiency (SE). The corresponding numerical results have shown that the proposed DQL-MPF framework exhibits superior performance in terms of both the overall SE and Jain's Fair Index, achieved at a fast convergence rate. More specifically, when the noise power is high and the number of users is relatively large, the DQL-MPF algorithm achieves a more than tenfold overall SE compared to the Baseline scheme. Moreover, the synergy between the MPF and the DQL algorithms is investigated. To this end, we demonstrate that the MPF algorithm maximizes the fairness amongst the users while the DQL algorithm maximizes the overall SE and improves the robustness against the noise. Our results also highlight the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm in leveraging the increasing number of IRS elements for optimized performance. © 2023 The Authors.

To improve the performance of the original backtracking search algorithm (BSA), this work combines BSA with a centralized population initialization and an elitism-based local escape operator and proposes a new, improved variant of BSA called CiBSA. BSA's performance is improved by centralized population initialization regarding search capability, convergence speed, and capacity to jump out of the local optimum. The suggested algorithm's elitism-based local escape operator method prevents BSA searching slowness and enhances convergence rates and local search efficiency. The performance of the proposed algorithm has been tested on a set of 54 test suites. An extensive comparison with other recent meta-heuristics algorithms (MA) demonstrates that both methodologies substantially assist BSA in boosting the quality of its solutions and speeding up the convergence rate. The proposed CiBSA is then applied to a real-world problem: image segmentation using Kapur's entropy function. The proposed CiBSA is successfully applied to the segmentation of COVID-19 CT images using Kapur's entropy for grey-scale images. Considering the performance matrices Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio (PSNR), Structural Similarity Index (SSIM), Feature Similarity Index (FSIM), and Intersection over Union (IoU), the suggested CiBSA outperformed conventional MA algorithms. In COVID-19 CT image segmentation trials, CiBSA has superior segmentation capability and adaptability at varied threshold levels than other approaches.
