Sleep study is of major importance for the assessment of sleep apneas, sleep stages or the diagnosis of sleep disorders. Although there exists a variety of tools for the evaluation of sleep, including the gold standard polysomnography (PSG) or high-tech wearable devices, the last decade there is also an increasing interest in the use of ultra wide-band (UWB) radar sensors for non-contact medical studies. The objective of this study is to develop a pre-clinical environment for the measurement of two important vital signs of the human functions, i.e., the respiratory and heartbeat rates, through UWB radar recordings of chest motion. For this purpose, at first we composed a simulating chest and heart motion architecture which represents these two basic body functions in parallel. After that, with the employment of a UWB-radar, we performed extensive recordings of simulator's displacements, and we concluded to the mathematical estimation of the respiratory and heartbeat rates, compared to the initial frequencies given to the simulated procedure. Our experimental results prove that we can estimate both rates in an accurate manner and even if these pre-clinical tests are made under ideal conditions, the UWB-radar can further be used for clinical assessment, with promising perspectives. © 2023 Copyright for this paper by its authors. In this paper we present two types of server implementation, we will look at the advantages and disadvantages of each technology. *** server application, built with ***, a single threaded server which will treat the requests in an asynchronous manner, with a non-blocking principle, whilst Spring Boot is a more robust and more common approach of a server technology with the benefits of having a strongly typed architecture and multiple threads available. These types of application will behave the same, making almost impossible to tell the difference between a *** and a Spring Boot web server. © 2023 IEEE.

Cost Optimization for Serverless Edge Computing with Budget Constraints using Deep Reinforcement Learning

Serverless computing adopts a pay-as-you-go billing model where applications are executed in stateless and short-lived containers triggered by events, resulting in a reduction of monetary costs and resource utilization. However, existing platforms do not provide an upper bound for the billing model which makes the overall cost unpredictable, precluding many organizations from managing their budgets. Due to the diverse ranges of serverless functions and the heterogeneous capacity of edge devices, it is challenging to receive near-optimal solutions for deployment cost in a polynomial time. In this paper, we investigated the function scheduling problem with a budget constraint for serverless computing in wireless networks. Users and IoT devices are sending requests to edge nodes, improving the latency perceived by users. We propose two online scheduling algorithms based on reinforcement learning, incorporating several important characteristics of serverless functions. Via extensive simulations, we justify the superiority of the proposed algorithm by comparing with an ILP solver (Midaco). Our results indicate that the proposed algorithms efficiently approximate the results of Midaco within a factor of 1.03 while our decision-making time is 5 orders of magnitude less than that of Midaco. © 2025, CC BY.

Drones have evolved over the past years to a level that they have become more efficient and, at the same time, have miniature sizes and advanced environment sensing capabilities. As a result, drone swarms are being applied in various applications nowadays, as they can sense and process information from the surrounding environment to achieve higher level of functionality. For example, drone swarms are employed in disaster control and large area monitoring to prevent catastrophic events such as wild fires. For drone swarms to operate properly, a critical aspect is their remote command and control capabilities. Since swarms can possibly consist of an increased number of drones, it is important that they hold a certain degree of autonomy. In the current work, a Coverage Path Planning (CPP) algorithm is proposed for unknown area exploration. The proposed algorithm discovers the Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) nodes within the area and, then, it collects their data under a data collection scheme being used. For evaluating the proposed algorithm, a simulated environment is developed to assess its effectiveness in terms of fairness in data collection from the WSN nodes. Fairness, in the current case, measures the percentage of data collected from the WSN nodes and is calculated multiple times during the experiments. Two coverage paths are considered here, the parallel lines and the spiral lines. The results showcase that the coverage path affects the fairness index while the parallel lines seem to provide more consistent data collection than the spiral, the latter increasing the fairness index. © 2022 IEEE.

Diabetes mellitus, causing substantial global mortality with millions affected in 2019, necessitates early detection methods to aid Diabetic Foot Ulcer (DFU) patients. We proposed a mobile application for early DFU identification using a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) classifier. The application embedded a fine-tuned MobileNetV2 model specifically adapted for DFUs, trained on a plantar thermogram dataset through transfer learning. We evaluate the model's classification performance pre- and post-embedded into the application. Results reveal that the pre-embedded model achieved 90% accuracy, 100% specificity, and 80% sensitivity. After embedding, the model retained 85% accuracy, 80% specificity, and 90% sensitivity. Notably, a slight accuracy decrease post-embedded is likely attributed to the normalization of the input image. This study emphasizes that the interplay between model performance and mobile embedded might influence the model's performance. It underscores the meticulous consideration of mobile platform-specific processes crucial for accurate and effective early DFU detection. © 2023 IEEE.

Diesel-electric locomotives are equipped with one or more synchronous generators driven by diesel engines, that provide the necessary electrical energy for their operation. These generators are usually provided with some protection relays, depending on their rated power and their type of service. Standard stator-ground fault protection has a setting for rated conditions. In case of variable speed and voltage operation, the protection does not cover all the operation range of the machine. In addition, unwanted tripping may occur due to incorrect filtering of the third harmonic. In this paper, an auto-adaptative stator ground protection function is presented, for the operation of synchronous machines at variable voltage and frequency. A specific case study is tackled, focused on the main generators of a diesel-electric locomotive. Numerous simulations are carried out to verify the proposed protection method. The obtained results are promising, and they can be used in other synchronous machines operating at variable speed. © 2023 IEEE.

The exploitation of sustainable distributed energy sources is associated with the energy resilience and power optimisation of power grids. This study divides the energy sector of urban areas into isolated and non-isolated topologies and attempts to review the application of microgrids within the two. In addition, it investigates methods to optimise power quality with the integration of multi-renewable generation to the system and discusses on the feasibility towards islanded operating microgrids. The proposed work is a result of a careful evaluation of the current literature on the topic. Consequently, the outcome of the given study is anticipated to facilitate future work on Microgrid implementation functioning in islanded mode.

The paper describes the energy consumption from the battery based on the current measurements for various cases, i.e., speed (PWL adjustment) and loads. The main purpose of the research is to have additional and reliable information about power consumption and battery life estimation for autonomous guided vehicles (AGV). The authors propose a two-step algorithm. In the first step, a linear classifier was proposed. Then, the KNN classifier was tested;however, it did not give satisfactory results, so it was finally decided to use the random forest to estimate the load and PWL. The time domain current measurement is evaluated, and the beforementioned algorithms process the selected statistical measures. It has been proven that a two-step algorithm allows for achieving high accuracy. Based on the current observation, the paper is a good starting point for further investigation of the AGV because it is usually implemented in the AGV - so it does not require additional hardware. Moreover, it can lead to better energy management and increase battery lifetime. © 2023 IEEE.
