Neural network implementations on FPGAs have received significant attention from the research community due to their superior performance in tasks such as computer vision and the need to perform them on edge devices. Most efforts have focused on architecture optimizations such as pruning and operations such as the multiplications and additions with less attention on the ANN activation function. In this paper a hardware implementation of an artificial neural network on Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA) is presented. A digital system architecture is designed with the purpose of reducing the delay of implementation and minimizing the LUTs in the FPGA. The designed architecture is described using Very High-Speed Integrated Circuits Hardware Description Language (VHDL). The proposed method utilizes a known piecewise linear approximation of the sigmoid function, and additionally exploits properties of fixed-point binary number representation to efficiently reduce delay and the amount of LUTS required Compared with previously published implementations of the same function and FPGA technology, the proposed method is shown to achieve a reduction between 33% and 95% in LUTs with no reduction in accuracy.

Carbon neutrality is a global target pursued by cities worldwide to achieve a balance between carbon emissions and removals, reaching a net-zero carbon state. Mitigation measures are being implemented to reduce emissions and enhance carbon sequestration, aiming to meet the targets set for 2050 or 2060. However, challenges posed by urban sprawl and increasing urbanization raise concerns about the feasibility of achieving carbon neutrality. Various studies have been conducted to project the attainment of this goal by developing prediction models. Machine learning (ML) prediction models use socio-economic, energy, and technological data to forecast carbon neutrality. These models consider factors like GDP per capita, urbanization rate, total energy consumption, and forest stock volume, formulating scenarios based on policy documents and historical data. Some models have incorporated optimization methods like the sparrow search algorithm, genetic neural network, and aquila optimizer to improve prediction accuracy. However, classical optimization methods have limitations, such as susceptibility to getting trapped in local optima, which can affect model performance. Quantum-based optimization methods, particularly quantum annealing (QA), are emerging as potential solutions to address these challenges by leveraging the principles of quantum mechanics to optimize complex problem spaces. QA enhances ML processes like feature selection, hyperparameter optimization, and regression model optimization. This study provides a review of pipeline processes from state-of-the-art methods, as well as their potential quantum-based enhancements, to achieve more precise predictive models.

Semantically-Disentangled Progressive Image Compression for Deep Space Communications: Exploring the Ultra-low Rate Regime

While sensing imagery in space missions has broad applications, the growing image resolution and data volume have caused a major challenge due to limited deep space channel capacities. To address this challenge, semantics-aware image compression becomes a promising direction. This paper is motivated to explore lossy compression at the ultra-low rate regime, which is a deviation from the high-fidelity- oriented tradition. Specifically, we propose an ultra-low rate deep image compression (DIC) codec by synthesizing multiple neural computing techniques such as style generative adversarial network (GAN), inverse GAN mapping, and contrastive disentangled representation learning. In addition, a residual-based progressive encoding framework is proposed to enable smooth transitions from the ultra-low rate regime to near- lossless regime. Experiments on the FFHQ and DOTA dataset demonstrate that compared with existing DICs, the proposed DIC can push the minimum rate boundary by about one order of magnitude while preserving the semantic attributes and maintaining a high perception quality. We further elaborate the design considerations for cross-rate-regime progressive DIC. Our study confirm that a semantically disentangled DIC holds the promise to bridge multiple rate regimes. IEEE

Based on the achievements regarding the 2020 targets, the Renewable Energy Directive established a new, higher target for 2030, reflecting a significant increase of interest for renewable energy sources (RES). As a result, various new software simulation packages, featuring models of RES, have been developed and being used in academia as well as in industry for research, educational or training purposes. In this paper Wind turbine (WT) characteristics and wind speed data obtained from a commissioned wind farm in Cyprus are used to implement a simulation model in two different software programs featuring RES simulation capabilities. Power System computer Aided Design (PSCAD) is used to investigate the electrical power output of a WT model, and KYAMOS software is used to investigate the modelling of the blades, the resulting primary torque and the resulting rotor rotational speed. The investigation result novelty is the establishment of the ability of the proposed, under development, software program to satisfy the three required characteristics. Therefore, Deviation from measured values of the turbine characteristics is observed for both programs, user interface and blade modelling, and the potential of integrating results of one software into the other is investigated. © 2023 IEEE.

The rapid advancement of 5G Radio Access Network (RAN) architecture is facilitating the construction of 5G networks, marking a significant milestone in telecommunications evolution. Given the complexity of the 5G core architecture, traditional simulation methods are insufficient, necessitating novel approaches. Emulator systems are crucial for creating dynamic, controlled environments that enable exploration of real-world scenarios without physical constraints. SEMU5G, a 5G core emulator, SDN controller, and RAN simulator, utilizes Open5GS implemented in Docker Container for test system flexibility and isolation. Additionally, an SDN controller is integrated to monitor data flows in the User Plane Function (UPF) and gNB simulated by UERANSIM in Mininet-WiFi. This comprehensive integration facilitates effective and flexible real-world exploration, providing a dynamic and controlled test environment for 5G core research. Scenario testing comprises two stages: firstly, a fixed network topology is employed to compare resource usage and confirm successful SEMU5G integration. Secondly, a mobile network topology is utilized to implement a mobile device scenario and compare the Quality of Service (QoS) of SEMU5G with other available emulators. These stages ensure thorough evaluation of SEMU5G's performance and its comparative advantage over existing solutions. © 2024 IEEE.

Procedural modeling is used to generate virtual content in organized layouts of exterior and interior elements. There is a large number of existing layout generation methods, and newer approaches propose the generation of multiple layout types within the same generation session. This introduces additional constraints when manually created layout elements need to be combined with the automatically generated content. Existing approaches are either designed to work with existing elements for a single layout type, or require a high amount of manual work for adding existing elements within multiple layouts. This paper presents a method that enables the application of existing subdivision methods on multiple layout types by inserting existing content into the generation result. This method can generate test cases by creating variations of partially generated layouts for procedural modeling methods that can work with existing content.

While the field of 3D scene reconstruction is dominated by NeRFs due to their photorealistic quality, 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) has recently emerged, offering similar quality with real-time rendering speeds. However, both methods primarily excel with well-controlled 3D scenes, while in-the-wild data - characterized by occlusions, dynamic objects, and varying illumination - remains challenging. NeRFs can adapt to such conditions easily through per-image embedding vectors, but 3DGS struggles due to its explicit representation and lack of shared parameters. To address this, we introduce WildGaussians, a novel approach to handle occlusions and appearance changes with 3DGS. By leveraging robust DINO features and integrating an appearance modeling module within 3DGS, our method achieves state-of-the-art results. We demonstrate that WildGaussians matches the real-time rendering speed of 3DGS while surpassing both 3DGS and NeRF baselines in handling in-the-wild data, all within a simple architectural framework. © 2024 Neural information processing systems foundation. This study aims to develop a health monitoring system using an ESP8266 microcontroller and fuzzy logic to view real-time health data and predict the patients’ heart health conditions. The system is designed to monitor various physiological data, including heart rate and blood pressure, by utilizing sensors connected to the ESP8266 microcontroller device. Data obtained from the sensors will be transmitted wirelessly to a web-based platform, which facilitates remote monitoring and real-time data visualization. In addition, fuzzy logic is used to analyze the sensor data, classifying the health status into defined categories, including normal, moderate, and critical. This method facilitates a comprehensive understanding of the health situation, which offers patients a precise and clear description of their health status. The results of this study indicate that the combination of ESP8266 with fuzzy logic offers an effective, economical, and scalable solution for real-time health monitoring. This device can be applied for remote patient monitoring and early identification of possible heart disease problems.

Software development is implemented in several key phases, one of which is software testing. Software testing consists of selecting techniques for the purpose of finding software defects and bugs in the process of writing code. There are several ways and approaches that lead us to that purpose, with the goal of selecting the most adequate method in terms of cost, complexity, and efficiency. In this paper, we will take a deeper dive into mutation testing techniques. Mutation testing techniques are fault-based and focus more on test structures than the input data, which is considered the testing start point. The basic concept of mutation testing consists of a few steps, which will be covered in this paper, and metrics that measure how effective the tests really are. With a few code examples, we will show why code coverage, which is mostly taken as a measure while testing, is sometimes not the most reliable source and does not give a full picture when talking about the quality of written tests.
