The need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and the high price of fossil fuels have made renewable resources attractive in energy-based economies around the world. Renewable energy sources will make up a significant part of the modern energy system in the future because they have promising potential. Many countries are already working to increase their capacity for renewable energy. The placement of renewable resources in power systems has gained significant attention due to their potential to provide power to distribution feeders or near consumers. However, the integration of these resources can have adverse effects on the distribution network, which necessitates their placement to be carefully considered. In this study, a novel method of coordinating protection devices based on the current control of distributed production sources using their current-voltage diagram during fault conditions is suggested. The proposed method aims to address the coordination and regulation problems encountered when integrating scattered resources into the network. To evaluate the effectiveness of our approach, we compare the impact of the presence of renewable sources at various points on the network during flooding. We conduct simulations using the ETAP software and present the obtained results. The proposed protection coordination method effectively mitigates the challenges of integrating renewable resources into the distribution network, providing a promising solution to support the transition towards a more sustainable energy future. © 2023 IEEE.

Wind power sources are evolving and becoming more prevalent in energy systems, which has implications for a variety of operational metrics, including stability and frequency regulation. To guarantee the stability and reliability of the modern power system, it is crucial that grid-connected wind turbines operate consistently and reliably. It is still challenging to accurately and reliably characterize these generators and their components to analyze sequestered operational possibilities like short-circuit faults, soft-starting, and generator switching. To comprehensively understand the stability interactions within distribution grids or localized networks, an accurate simulation is essential. The current study investigates the impact of a static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) on a distribution system that incorporates an induction generator wind farm. Specifically, we analyze and simulate the effect of STATCOM on a 25 kV distribution system, which delivers the power generated by a 9 MW wind farm to the grid via a 25 kV line. The outcomes demonstrate that STATCOM plays a pivotal role in regulating the voltage changes at the common connection point between the distribution system and the wind farm during both normal and faulty conditions. In addition to improving the stability and efficiency of the distribution network, STATCOM can also provide active power during short-circuit fault conditions. Based on the outcomes, the effectiveness of the proposed approach is highly dependent on the wind energy system's parameters. Due to the inherent parameter uncertainty, non-stationarity, and nonlinearity in the wind power system, the use of a parameter prediction approach based on artificial intelligence (AI) is recommended for future research. © 2023 IEEE.

System operators in low-inertia power systems often have to curtail renewable energy sources (RES) and employ strict under-frequency load shedding (UFLS) schemes to ensure frequency security after an event leading to loss of generation. This approach limits the maximum RES penetration in a system and results to the loss of load. To tackle these problems, fast frequency response (FFR) schemes can be used to limit the frequency Nadir after a disturbance and decrease the need for RES curtailments and UFLS. This article provides insights on the interaction between the Kinetic Energy (KE), Frequency Containment Reserves (FCR), and Nadir after a disturbance, which are the driving mechanisms leading to RES curtailment. Then, it analyses the impact of FFR on the Nadir and its ability to alleviate RES curtailment problems. The low-inertia, islanded, Cyprus dynamic model is used to quantify the results and showcase the impact on a real system.

This research deals with the design of a broadband, slant-polarized antenna array for 26–40 GHz frequency band. The design employs gap waveguide technology to minimize unwanted energy leakage, ensuring high gain and efficiency. In this configuration, the radiating slots are angled at 45°, and a two-layer feed network, utilizing compact folded E-plane groove gap waveguide power dividers, is used to energize the slots. Key advantages of the proposed antenna array include its low profile, low loss, wide bandwidth, and suitability for millimeter-wave applications.

The reliable and stable operation of electrical power systems is crucial for maintaining power delivery to end-users. Transient stability analysis is a fundamental aspect of power system protection. In addition, the increased penetration of distributed generations (DGs) into the power system creates new challenges for protection devices. Thus, understanding the impact of DGs on power system protection is critical. This study investigates the transient stability of a power distribution grid with DGs to determine the optimal protection settings for overcurrent relays (OCRs). Specifically, the study aims to propose a novel technique for calculating the modified value of the overcurrent relay time dial setting (TDS) to ensure the coordination of OCRs and prevent the instability of DG sources. The transient stability of DGs is evaluated under various fault locations and DG penetration rates. The constraints imposed by DGs are then considered in the protection coordination of OCRs. The proposed protection strategy maintains coordination between the overcurrent relays and prevents the instability of DG sources. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed protection strategy, numerical simulations are conducted using ETAP Software on an IEEE 33-bus distribution system. The simulation results show that the proposed method can achieve reliable protection coordination of OCRs and maintain the stability of DG sources. Finally, to enhance the proposed method's practicality and efficiency, future research directions are identified, including the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) techniques into the proposed protection strategy. These efforts would consider the practical constraints and enable the proposed method's scalability and applicability to larger and more complex power systems. © 2023 IEEE.

Fundamental dynamics of popularity-similarity trajectories in real networks

Real networks are complex dynamical systems, evolving over time with the addition and deletion of nodes and links. Currently, there exists no principled mathematical theory for their dynamics—a grand-challenge open problem. Here, we show that the popularity and similarity trajectories of nodes in hyperbolic embeddings of different real networks manifest universal self-similar properties with typical Hurst exponents H 0.5. This means that the trajectories are predictable, displaying anti-persistent or ‘mean-reverting’ behavior, and they can be adequately captured by a fractional Brownian motion process. The observed behavior can be qualitatively reproduced in synthetic networks that possess a latent geometric space, but not in networks that lack such space, suggesting that the observed subdiffusive dynamics are inherently linked to the hidden geometry of real networks. These results set the foundations for rigorous mathematical machinery for describing and predicting real network dynamics. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The Internet of Things (IoT), like other network infrastructures, requires Intrusion Detection Systems (IDSs) to be protected against attacks. When deploying an IDS in IoT-based smart city environments, the balance between latency and node capacity must be considered, which justifies a distributed IDS with specific classifiers based on the location of the system processing nodes. This paper proposes a two-level classification technique for collaborative anomaly-based IDSs deployed on fog and edge nodes. A Gradient Boosting Classifier (GBC) is used in the lower layer classifier at the edge, while a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) is used in the upper layer classifier at the fog. Experimentation has demonstrated that the suggested IDS architecture outperforms previous solutions. For instance, in some scenarios, when comparing our proposal with Random Forest, the former obtained an accuracy equal to 99.1%, while the latter obtained 95.3%. Furthermore, our proposal can better select the most important network traffic features, reducing 76% of the data to be analyzed and improving privacy. © 2023 IEEE.

Robot swarm navigation faces challenges in coordi-nation in dynamic environments with limited information, since each robot only has local access, making optimal paths difficult to achieve. Increasing the number of robots also increases the complexity of communication and decision-making, while energy efficiency remains a priority. The Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) algorithm mimics the behavior of ants through pheromone trails, allowing robots to leave virtual trails that guide other robots in forming optimal paths, allowing them to adapt to changing environments. In this paper, we propose an optimal multi-robot navigation system with ACO based on Greedy Heuristics to improve the efficiency of robots in dealing with static and dynamic obstacles, avoiding collisions, and preventing deadlocks. The test results obtained the shortest distance of 31.2132034 meters with alpha parameters of 3 points and beta of 4 points as the optimum parameter configuration according to the method used.

Modular multiplication for large numbers is especially important in cryptography algorithms such as RSA and elliptic curves. The Montgomery algorithm is the most famous and efficient one for calculating it. Hardware implementation for cryptography co-processors is better than software implementation in terms of speed and security. Many FPGA designs for the Montgomery multiplication algorithm was published based on hardware description languages like VERILOG and VHDL. This paper proposes the FPGA design and implementation using MATLAB HDL Coder. The algorithm is modified such that it can fit any small/large FPGA by introducing scaling factor. The design is configurable in both modulus length and the scaling factor. This paper performs a comparison between the synthesizing results for different scales and for different modulus lengths. The synthesizing is performed up to 8K bit modulus length, and it can be increased easily. In this paper, implementation of different modulus lengths with different frequencies and with different area utilization can be easily achieved. The design utilizes different area resources for each configuration. The target is xc7vx330t-2ffg1157 Virtex-7 Xilinx FPGA. The maximum frequency is 80.81 MHz for 4096-bit modulus length with 8-bit data width and 2 for serialization factor. The minimum area utilization is achieved for minimum configurations, i.e., 1024-bit modulus length with 8-bit data width and for unity serialization factor. This paper proposes a scalable and configurable FPGA design for Montgomery multiplication co-processor-based HDL coder design.
