As digital technologies continue to advance, modern communication networks face unprecedented challenges in handling the vast amounts of data produced daily by connected intelligent devices. Autonomous vehicles, smart sensors, IoT systems etc., are gaining more and more interest and new communication paradigms are needed. This thesis addresses these challenges by combining semantic communication with generative models to optimize image compression and resource allocation in edge networks. Unlike traditional bit-centric communication systems, semantic communication prioritizes the transmission of meaningful data specifically selected to convey the meaning rather than obtain a faithful representation of the original data. The communication infrastructure can benefit of the focus solely on the relevant parts of the data due to significant improvements in bandwidth efficiency and latency reduction. Central to this work is the design of semantic-preserving image compression algorithms, utilizing advanced generative models such as Generative Adversarial Networks and Denoising Diffusion Probabilistic Models. These algorithms compress images by encoding only semantically relevant features and exploiting the generative power at the receiver side. This allows for the accurate reconstruction of high-quality images with minimal data transmission. The thesis also introduces a Goal-Oriented edge network optimization framework based on the Information Bottleneck problem and stochastic optimization, ensuring that communication resources are dynamically allocated to maximize efficiency and task performance. By integrating semantic communication into edge networks, the proposed system achieves a balance between computational efficiency and communication effectiveness, making it particularly suited for real-time applications. In this paper, a partially double pass configuration in serial hybrid fiber amplifier is experimentally demonstrated. In the proposed design, a double pass erbium gain and single pass Raman gain are achieved serially. A total pump power of 450 mW (400 mW for 1495 nm Raman amplifier and 50 mW for1480 nm in erbium amplifier) were used. At -30 dBm input signal power and optimum pumps conditions, the achieved flatness bandwidth is 80 nm (1530-1610 nm) in the conventional and long bands (C+L) bands. In addition, the obtained average gain level is 33 dB. While the obtained flatness gain is 85 nm (1525-1610 nm) within the large input signal power region at -5 dBm. By choosing a proper pump wavelength that avoid the overlapping between Raman and erbium peaks gain, a wide flatness gain is obtained. © 2023 IEEE.

Differential signals are key in control engineering as they anticipate future behavior of process variables and therefore are critical in formulating control laws such as proportional-integral-derivative(PID).The practical challenge,however,is to extract such signals from noisy measurements and this difficulty is addressed first by *** in the form of linear and nonlinear tracking differentiator(TD).While improvements were made,TD did not completely resolve the conflict between the noise sensitivity and the accuracy and timeliness of the *** two approaches proposed in this paper start with the basic linear TD,but apply iterative learning mechanism to the historical data in a moving window(MW),to form two new iterative learning tracking differentiators(IL-TD):one is a parallel IL-TD using an iterative ladder network structure which is implementable in analog circuits;the other a serial IL-TD which is implementable digitally on any computer *** algorithms are validated in simulations which show that the proposed two IL-TDs have better tracking differentiation and de-noise performance compared to the existing linear TD.

Many application from the bee colony health state monitoring could be efficiently solved using a computer vision techniques. One of such challenges is an efficient way for counting the number of incoming and outcoming bees, which could be used to further analyse many trends, such as the bee colony health state, blooming periods, or for investigating the effects of agricultural spraying. In this paper, we compare three methods for the automated bee counting over two own datasets. The best performing method is based on the ResNet-50 convolutional neural network classifier, which achieved accuracy of 87% over the BUT1 dataset and the accuracy of 93% over the BUT2 dataset.

Sensing systems onboard unmanned vehicles operate in an environment of constrained computational resources. A cyber-Attack may primarily aim to degrade these computing devices and, ultimately, incapacitate the sensing system itself. To prepare a prototype tracking system for degradation, this paper proposes distributed hardware implementation of a Multiple Model estimator on two FPGA units and, after an attack, adaptation of the estimator by leveraging Dynamic Partial Reconfiguration of the single surviving FPGA. The method ensures that the most likely models of the estimator are loaded on to the fabric of the surviving FPGA with minimal interruption. © 2022 IEEE.

Intelligent monitoring systems have evolved due to technological improvement and innovation in biometric identification technology and protecting lives and property. As a result, intelligent monitoring systems are becoming increasingly prevalent. Consequently, this paper proposes the development of an IoT-based Human Tracking system that incorporates the Kalman Filter (KF) Algorithm. Apart from the deployment of the Kalman Filter, analysis was also done with an optimized Kalman filter with PSO (KF-PSO) using Particle Swarm Optimization. Rather than manually tuning the process noise error, R, and measurement error, Q, which are involved in KF, PSO was also used to adjust the errors to obtain their best values for optimal estimation. As a result, a two-dimensional (2D) Kalman filter is developed. The positions and velocities of the object being tracked (i.e., humans) are estimated in x- and y-directions. The proposed system has been evaluated using ten different human datasets, each consisting of 100 samples. The quality performance of KF and KF-PSO models was also compared using accuracy analysis. In comparison, the KF-PSO model yielded an average Mean-Square error of 17 mm (i.e., 1.7% error), while the conventional KF model gave an average Mean-Square error of 22 mm (i.e., 2.2% error). Hence, the KF-PSO model is a better filter than the conventional KF model because of its higher accuracy. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

In the last three years, a new partner has emerged for teachers and educators in the field of education. The mushrooming of applications based on large language models has greatly shaped the educational development fields of the present era. The use of various AI applications has become commonplace among students and teachers alike. Many questions are being raised by researchers in this field. What does the rapid development of AI applications bring to the field of pedagogy? Should the products of such applications be compared with human performance? The form presented in this thesis seeks to answer similar questions. What is the impact of frequent use of these applications on the literacy level of individuals? In which areas do students tend to use these applications? The results indicate that half of the students believe their literacy levels will decrease with the mass emergence of AI applications, while 36% feel it will not change. However, 88 % of students have already dealt with AI-based applications, with 64 % using them several times or more, suggesting a high level of integration into their educational processes. © 2024 IEEE.

During the COVID19 epidemic, people of all ages from all walks of life around the world have become inevitably familiar with and almost dependent on the digital tools of the age and the opportunities they offer. A change had to take place very quickly that was unprecedented. This process has also affected education. During the time of the reading lock-in, there was a proliferation of digital curricular content. The second time around, online education came to the fore, thanks to less or well-functioning online platforms, and has since become part of everyday teaching. What is the effectiveness and usefulness of sharing knowledge in this way? Is literacy still needed at all? Can online and hybrid (a controlled mix of face-to-face and online) education replace the well-established contact and face-to-face education? The study show that the respondents believe that online education has had an impact on literacy and that it is perceived to have a positive impact. The results indicate that online education has a positive impact on the literacy levels of students, as it facilitates knowledge acquisition and enhances digital literacy skills. © 2024 IEEE.

As disassembly lines evolve, keeping workers safe from all potential dangers has become paramount. This work proposes an improved approach, Proximal Policy Optimization for Disassembly Line(PPO-DL), to address Multi-objective Dis-assembly Line Balancing Problem(MDLBP) that integrates task switching time and hazardous tasks. The MDLBP model aims to optimize disassembly net profit, balance workstation utilization, and mitigate penalties from hazardous tasks. The proposed PPO-DL modifies the action space of PPO to accommodate MD LBP characteristics, ensuring efficient learning by restricting actions to valid ranges through action masking. Comparative experiments with PPO, Q-learning, and A2C demonstrate PPO-DL's superiority in finding near-optimal solutions across various scenarios. © 2024 IEEE.
