This paper deals with the optimisation of control structures for multivariable process control systems. Incremental optimisation of control structures is the task of improving the performance of an existing control structure by incrementally introducing or removing dynamic connections in the control structure. A preliminary method for the detection of an improving structural change in an existing control structure is presented. An optimal control method for two-dimensional (2-D) linear systems with variable coefficients and free boundary conditions in Roesser's model is proposed in this paper. Based on Roesser's model, an equivalent general 1-D model of the 2-D system is presented, and the problem of minimizing a 2-D linear quadratic (LQ) cost function is solved for the case where complete state information is available. The solution is obtained by using the proposed dynamic programming in 1-D descriptor form to solve the Riccati equation and then arriving at the optimal control law and minimum cost. The proposed control methodology can be applied to discrete-time models of systems described by partial differential equations and can also be used in the field of signal processing.

Active filters are used to eliminate current harmonics near nonlinear loads. This paper presents a new method for the evaluation of the current that should be injected by the active filter in order to eliminate harmonics. The method proposed is based on the Synchronous Reference Frame method and explores the fact that the performance of the active filter depends on the speed of the system that determines the rotating reference frame, but doesn't depend on its position. Compared with other methods, this method presents some advantages, due to its simplicity and its rudeness to perturbations on the ac network. Normally active filters have poor performances under non symmetrical and non-sinusoidal voltage conditions. The method proposed in this paper presents good response in presence of harmonics on the ac mains voltages and in presence of imbalance.
