An improved reinforcement learning algorithm is proposed in this paper. This algorithm is based on linear programming method for finding the best-response policy. A pursuit example is tested and the results show that this algorithm has some properties, such as easy computation, simple operation procedure and can guarantee a good learning convergence.

An environment is a very complex and large system. This paper describes it with the aid of the grey systems approach. Firstly, the grey system and grey process are outlined then the latest researches on grey prediction and control of environmental systems are presented. This kind of systems designed here is best suited for investigating the environmental objects with "poor" information.

In wireless video streaming application, video information may be corrupted by a noisy channel. By introducing error resilience and error concealment techniques, many researchers have tried to eliminate quality degradation of reconstructed picture in decoding a corrupted data. On the contrary, there are relatively fewer works discussing the ways to diminish the corruption. Hence, system designers need to use different methods to restrict the error cause by channel within a tolerable extent. In other words, the system will be difficult to be implemented in practical design. In this paper, we propose a way to protect the video header information in application layer without modifying standardized syntax. Beside, we also consider channel condition of wireless transmission and propose a way to reduce redundant bits used in channel coding. By doing this, the bitstream can be simply transmitted over practical wireless network and the reconstructed picture quality outperforms the original one.

In this paper, improved rotor position estimation for position sensorless control system of the switched reluctance motor (SRM) is presented. For more accurate rotor position estimation, the phase locked loop (PLL) based position interpolation is adapted. In the current-flux-rotor position lookup table based rotor position estimation, the inherent current and flux-linkage ripple can cause the position estimation error. Instead of the conventional low-pass filter, the PLL based position interpolation technique is used for the better dynamic performance. The developed rotor position estimation scheme is realized using TMS320 F2812 digital signal processor and prototype 1-hp SRM.

The classification of protein structures is essential for their function determination in bioinformatics. The success of the protein structure classification depends on two factors: the computational methods used and the features selected. In this paper, we use a combinatorial fusion analysis technique to facilitate feature selection and combination for improving predictive accuracy in protein structure classification. When applying these criteria to our previous work, the resulting classification has an overall prediction accuracy rate of 87% for four classes and 69.6% for 27 folding categories. These rates are significantly higher than our previous work and demonstrate that combinatorial fusion is a valuable method for protein structure classification.

A systematic methodology for generating multi-folded torus chaotic attractors from a simple three-dimensional piecewise-linear system is presented in this paper. Theoretical analysis shows that multi-folded torus chaotic attractors can be created via alternative switching between two piecewise-linear systems. A novel circuit diagram is designed for physically creating multi-folded torus chaotic attractors. This is the first time in the literature to experimentally verify a maximum 9-folded torus chaotic attractor that is generated by an analog circuit.

Distributed sensor networks (DSNs) are being developed for a wide range of applications. A sensor networks consist of a large number of nodes performing distributed sensing/event detection. Sensor nodes are energy-constrained, efficient routing is essential for increasing the lifetime of a sensor network. A DSN requires interoperability, low latency, and low power consumption in order to operate for long periods of time. Due to power constraints, DSN should be able to operate at low data rates and still delivering acceptable quality of service. In a DSN the energy required for communications tasks is usually much greater than the energy required for computational tasks. To reduce the data communication between nodes and to maximize the network lifetime, we propose to use the mobile-agent paradigm. In mobile-agent based DSN9 instead of moving data from an individual sensor node to a processing center as in the client-server based computing, mobile agents are dispatched from the processing center to the sensor nodes and process data locally. By moving code to the data, a mobile agent can reduce latency, bandwidth and vulnerability to network disconnection.

We consider a motion planning method based on cooperative biological swarming models with virtual attractive and repulsive potentials (VARP). We derive a map between the model and fan speeds for the Kelly, a second order vehicle on the Caltech multi vehicle wireless testbed. The motion planning map results leads to the development and implementation of a point to point controller which is subsequently used as part of a cooperative searching algorithm. The VARP control method is scalable and can be used to organize a swarm of robotic vehicles.

We employ set oriented methods in combination with graph partitioning algorithms to identify key dynamical regions in the Sun-Jupiter-particle three-body system. Transport rates from a region near the 3∶2 Hilda resonance into the realm of orbits crossing Mars’ orbit are computed. In contrast to common numerical approaches, our technique does not depend on single long term simulations of the underlying model. Thus, our statistical results are particularly reliable since they are not affected by a dynamical behavior which is almost nonergodic (i.e., dominated by strongly almost invariant sets).
