In this paper, a new approach to the problem of impulsive noise reduction for color images is presented. The new image filtering technique is based on the maximization of the similarities between pixels in a predefined filtering window. The new method filters out the noise component, while adapting itself to the local image structures. In this way, the proposed algorithm is able to eliminate impulsive noise, while preserving edges and fine image details. Since the algorithm can be considered as a vector median filter driven by fuzzy membership functions, it is fast and computationally efficient. Experimental results indicate that the proposed filter outperforms other commonly used algorithms for impulsive noise reduction in color images.

The computational complexity of the new filter is lower than that of the vector median. The comparison shows that the new filter outperforms the VMF, as well as other standard procedures used in color image processing, when the impulse noise is to be eliminated.

We previously studied amplitude estimation of one-dimensional (1D) sinusoidal signals from measurements corrupted by possibly colored observation noise (see Stoica, P. et al., IEEE Trans. on Sig. Proc., vol. 48, p.338-52, 2000). We extend those results for two-dimensional (2D) amplitude estimation. In particular, we investigate the 2D sinusoidal amplitude estimation within the general frameworks of least squares (LS), weighted least squares (WLS), and MAtched FIlterbank (MAFI) estimation. A variety of 2D amplitude estimators are presented, which are all asymptotically statistically efficient. The performances of these estimators in finite samples are compared numerically with one another. Making use of amplitude estimation techniques, we introduce a new scheme for 2D system identification, which is shown to be computationally simpler and statistically more accurate than the conventional output error method (OEM), when the observation noise is colored.

An experimental speed control drive system for the shifted WIN pitched switched reluctance machine, using the C167 embedded controller, is presented. Methods of speed control and acceleration estimation are discussed. System performance is tested for speed step change, speed reversal, speed tracking and load disturbance responses using proportional plus integral (PI) control and sliding mode (SLM) control. A comparison between proportional plus integral and sliding mode speed control, using Slotine's approach, is experimentally carried out and the robustness of sliding mode control is shown.

In this paper PI and PID controllers augmented by a Smith predictor structure are compared to ordinary PI and PID controllers, for plants with medium and great time delays. The comparison is based an a systematic evaluation method, where both robustness and performance aspects in different frequency regions are taken into account. The results show that a Smith predictor increases performance somewhat for a PID controller when the time delay is moderate. For great time delays, however, the improvement is insignificant. An important remark is that it is necessary to include the predictor structure in the design to get acceptable robustness properties. For a PI controller the benefits from a predictor are mostly small or negligible independent of time delay. Most important is, however that a derivative part obviously will bring significantly greater improvement than a Smith predictor to a system with a PI controller. This result is somewhat surprising, since Smith predictors are normally used together with PI and not with PID controllers. Furthermore, it is sometimes argued that it is no use to include derivative action for plants with significant time delay.

A new filter class for multichannel image processing is introduced and analyzed. The new technique of image enhancement is capable of reducing impulsive and Gaussian noise and it significantly outperforms the standard methods of noise reduction. In the paper, a smoothing operator, based on a random walk model and on a fuzzy similarity measure between pixels connected by a digital geodesic path, is introduced. The efficiency of the proposed method was tested on standard color images using objective image quality measures. Obtained results show that the new method not only outperforms standard noise reduction algorithms, but has some interesting features useful for segmentation of noisy color images.
