This paper proposes a novel control framework for handling (potentially coupled) multiple time-varying output constraints for uncertain nonlinear systems. First, it is shown that the satisfaction of multiple output constraints boils down to ensuring the positiveness of a scalar variable (the signed distance from the time-varying output-constrained set’s boundary). Next, a single funnel constraint is designed properly, whose satisfaction ensures convergence to and invariance of the time-varying output-constrained set. Then a robust and low-complexity funnel-based feedback controller is designed employing the prescribed performance control method. Multi-task optimization (MTO) is a novel emerging evolutionary computation paradigm that is used for solving multiple optimization tasks concurrently. Most MTO algorithms limit each individual to one task, and thus weaken the performance of information exchange. To address this issue and improve the efficiency of knowledge transfer, this work proposes an efficient MTO framework named individually-guided multi-task optimization (IMTO). It divides evolutions into vertical and horizontal ones. To further improve the efficiency of knowledge transfer, a partial individuals' learning scheme is used to choose suitable individuals to learn from other tasks. Experimental results show its superior advantages over the multifactorial evolutionary algorithm and its variants.

Fault diagnosis of rotating equipment plays a crucial role in ensuring operational reliability and minimizing downtime in industrial systems. This study proposes a novel approach that integrates personalized federated learning (PFL) with a Kolmogorov-Arnold network (KAN)-enhanced convolutional neural network (CNN) to improve diagnostic accuracy across heterogeneous operational environments. The framework is designed to address variations in equipment conditions and data distributions, providing personalized models tailored to specific clients. A comprehensive evaluation is conducted using benchmark datasets, demonstrating significant improvements in fault classification accuracy, model interpretability, and training efficiency under non-IID data settings using the KAN-enhanced CNN model. This study contributes to advancing predictive maintenance practices, paving the way for resilient and intelligent industrial systems.

Electric vehicles are equipped with a large number of lithium-ion battery cells. To achieve superior performance and guarantee safety and longevity, there is a fundamental requirement for a Battery Management System (BMS). In the BMS, accurate prediction of the State-of-Charge (SOC) is a crucial task. The SOC information is needed for monitoring, controlling, and protecting the battery, e.g. to avoid hazardous over-charging or over-discharging. Nonetheless, the SOC is an internal cell variable and cannot be straightforwardly obtained. This paper presents a Kalman Filter (KF) approach based on an optimized second-order Rc equivalent circuit model to carefully account for model parameter changes. An effective machine learning technique based on Proximal Policy optimization (PPO) is applied to train the algorithm. The results confirm the high robustness of the proposed method to varying operating conditions.

Skin cancer is a highly dangerous type of cancer that requires an accurate diagnosis from experienced physicians. To help physicians diagnose skin cancer more efficiently, a computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) system can be very helpful. In this paper, we propose a novel model, which uses a novel attention mechanism to pinpoint the differences in features across the spatial dimensions and symmetry of the lesion, thereby focusing on the dissimilarities of various classes based on symmetry, uniformity in texture and color, etc. Additionally, to take into account the variations in the boundaries of the lesions for different classes, we employ a gradient-based fusion of wavelet and soft attention-aided features to extract boundary information of skin lesions. We have tested our model on the multi-class and highly class-imbalanced dataset, called HAM10000, and achieved promising results, with a 91.17% F1-score and 90.75% accuracy. During the COVID19 epidemic, people of all ages from all walks of life around the world have become inevitably familiar with and almost dependent on the digital tools of the age and the opportunities they offer. A change had to take place very quickly that was unprecedented. This process has also affected education. During the time of the reading lock-in, there was a proliferation of digital curricular content. The second time around, online education came to the fore, thanks to less or well-functioning online platforms, and has since become part of everyday teaching. What is the effectiveness and usefulness of sharing knowledge in this way? Is literacy still needed at all? Can online and hybrid (a controlled mix of face-to-face and online) education replace the well-established contact and face-to-face education? The study show that the respondents believe that online education has had an impact on literacy and that it is perceived to have a positive impact. The results indicate that online education has a positive impact on the literacy levels of students, as it facilitates knowledge acquisition and enhances digital literacy skills.

Sleep is vital to our daily activity. Lack of proper sleep can impair functionality and overall health. While stress is known for its detrimental impact on sleep quality, the precise effect of pre-sleep stress on subsequent sleep structure remains unknown. This study introduced a novel approach to study the pre-sleep stress effect on sleep structure, specifically slow-wave sleep (SWS) deficiency. To achieve this, we selected forehead resting EEG immediately before and upon sleep onset to extract stress-related neurological markers through power spectra and entropy analysis. These markers include beta/delta correlation, alpha asymmetry, fuzzy entropy (FuzzEn) and spectral entropy (SpEn). Fifteen subjects were included in this study. Our results showed that subjects lacking SWS often exhibited signs of stress in EEG, such as an increased beta/delta correlation, higher alpha asymmetry, and increased FuzzEn in frontal EEG. Conversely, individuals with ample SWS displayed a weak beta/delta correlation and reduced FuzzEn. Finally, we employed several supervised learning models and found that the selected neurological markers can predict subsequent SWS deficiency. Our investigation demonstrated that the classifiers could effectively predict varying levels of slow-wave sleep (SWS) from pre-sleep EEG segments, achieving a mean balanced accuracy surpassing 0.75. The SMOTE-Tomek resampling method could improve the performance to 0.77. This study suggests that stress-related neurological markers derived from pre-sleep EEG can effectively predict SWS deficiency. Such information can be integrated with existing sleep-improving techniques to provide a personalized sleep forecasting and improvement solution. © 2001-2011 IEEE.
