Mixed Small Gain and Phase Theorem: A new view using Scale Relative Graphs

We introduce a novel approach to feedback stability analysis for linear time-invariant (LTI) systems, overcoming the limitations of the sectoriality assumption in the small phase theorem. While phase analysis for single-input single-output (SISO) systems is well-established, multi-input multi-output (MIMO) systems lack a comprehensive phase analysis until recent advances introduced with the small-phase theorem. A limitation of the small-phase theorem is the sectorial condition, which states that an operator’s eigenvalues must lie within a specified angle sector of the complex plane. We propose a framework based on Scaled Relative Graphs (SRGs) to remove this assumption. We derive two main results: a graphical set-based stability condition using SRGs and a small-phase theorem with no sectorial assumption. The cooperative output regulation problem has been extensively studied on the basis of the distributed observer approach. However, the majority of the existing research assumes that the dynamics is known previously. To remove this condition, the cooperative output regulation problem is further solved via the data-driven framework where the dynamics of the plant is unknown. First, a data-driven distributed observer is established to estimate the state of the leader with unknown dynamics subject to external inputs. Second, the unknown regulator equations are solved using the iterative recurrent neural network approach. Third, the state-based data-driven distributed control law is synthesized to solve the problem. The optimal gains are derived by solving convex optimization problems using input and state data. Finally, a numerical example is presented to verify the feasibility of the proposed framework.

This paper is concerned with model predictive control (MPC) of discrete-time linear systems subject to bounded additive disturbance and mixed constraints on the state and input, whereas the true disturbance set is unknown. Unlike most existing work on robust MPC, we propose an algorithm incorporating online learning that builds on prior knowledge of the disturbance, i.e., a known but conservative disturbance set. We approximate the true disturbance set at each time step with a parameterised set, which is referred to as a quantified disturbance set, using disturbance realisations. A key novelty is that the parameterisation of these quantified disturbance sets enjoys desirable properties such that the quantified disturbance set and its corresponding rigid tube bounding disturbance propagation can be efficiently updated online. We provide statistical gaps between the true and quantified disturbance sets, based on which, probabilistic recursive feasibility of MPC optimisation problems is discussed. Numerical simulations are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed algorithm and compare with conventional robust MPC algorithms. © 2023, CC BY.

Consensus and cluster forming of multiagent systems in the face of jamming attacks along with reactive recovery actions by a defender are discussed. The attacker is capable to disable some of the edges of the network with the objective to divide the agents into a smaller size of clusters while, in response, the defender recovers some of the edges by increasing the transmission power. We consider repeated games where the resulting optimal strategies for the two players are derived in a rolling horizon fashion. The attacker and the defender possess different computational abilities to calculate their strategies. This aspect is represented by the non-uniform values of the horizon lengths and the game periods. Theoretical and simulation based results demonstrate the effects of the horizon lengths and the game periods on the agents’ states. © 2023, CC BY.

This paper systematically investigates the performance of consensus-based distributed filtering under mismatched noise covariances. First, we introduce three performance evaluation indices for such filtering problems, namely the standard performance evaluation index, the nominal performance evaluation index, and the estimation error covariance. We derive difference expressions among these indices and establish one-step relations among them under various mismatched noise covariance scenarios. We particularly reveal the effect of the consensus fusion on these relations. Furthermore, the recursive relations are introduced by extending the results of the one-step relations. Subsequently, we demonstrate the convergence of these indices under the collective observability condition, and show this convergence condition of the nominal performance evaluation index can guarantee the convergence of the estimation error covariance. Additionally, we prove that the estimation error covariance of the consensus-based distributed filter under mismatched noise covariances can be bounded by the Frobenius norms of the noise covariance deviations and the trace of the nominal performance evaluation index. Sensor network localization (SNL) is a challenging problem due to its inherent non-convexity and the effects of noise in inter-node ranging measurements and anchor node position. We formulate a non-convex SNL problem as a multiplayer non-convex potential game and investigate the existence and uniqueness of a Nash equilibrium (NE) in both the ideal setting without measurement noise and the practical setting with measurement noise. We first show that the NE exists and is unique in the noiseless case, and corresponds to the precise network localization. Then, we study the SNL for the case with errors affecting the anchor node position and the inter-node distance measurements. Specifically, we establish that in case these errors are sufficiently small, the NE exists and is unique. It is shown that the NE is an approximate solution to the SNL problem, and that the position errors can be quantified accordingly. Based on these findings, we apply the results to case studies involving only inter-node distance measurement errors and only anchor position information inaccuracies.

Blood is vital for transporting oxygen, nutrients, and hormones to all body parts as it circulates through arteries and veins. It removes carbon dioxide, regulates body temperature, and maintains the body's immune system. Individuals constantly need blood and its derivatives to save their lives and improve their health through medical treatments and surgical operations. Liver diseases are one of the diseases that affects the health of individuals and requires blood to continue living. These diseases cause significant damage to people's health, and early diagnosis plays a crucial role in saving lives. In this paper, machine learning algorithms (support vector machine and random forest) are involved in detecting liver diseases and determining whether donors are suitable to donate blood from blood values. This paper is applied research that found that the performance measures of the random forest algorithm achieved excellent performance in identifying suitable people to donate blood.

In this paper, using tools from graph theory we provide verifiable necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a unique hydraulic equilibrium in district heating systems of meshed topology and containing multiple heat sources. Even though numerous publications have addressed the design of efficient algorithms for numerically finding hydraulic equilibria in the general context of water distribution networks, this is not the case for the analysis of existence and uniqueness. Moreover, most of the existing work dealing with these aspects exploit the equivalence between the nonlinear algebraic equations describing the hydraulic equilibria and the KKT conditions of a suitably defined nonlinear convex optimization problem. Differently, this paper proposes necessary and sufficient graph-theoretic conditions on the actuator placement for the existence and uniqueness of a hydraulic equilibrium, independent of the actuators' control objective. An example based on a representative district heating network is considered to illustrate the key aspects of our contribution, and an explicit formulation of the steady state solution is given for the case in which pressure drops through pipes are linear with respect to the flow rate.

Infrared (IR) spectroscopy is a fundamental technique in analytical chemistry. Recently, deep learning (DL) has drawn great interest as the modeling method of infrared spectral data. However, unlike vision or language tasks, IR spectral data modeling is faced with the problem of calibration transfer and has distinctive characteristics. Introducing the prior knowledge of IR spectroscopy could guide the DL methods to learn representations aligned with the domain-invariant characteristics of spectra, and thus improve the performance. Despite such potential, there is a notable absence of DL methods that incorporate such inductive bias. To this end, we propose Analytical-Chemistry-Informed Transformer (ACT) with two modules informed by the field knowledge in analytical chemistry. First, ACT includes learnable spectral processing inspired by chemometrics, which comprises spectral pre-processing, tokenization, and post-processing. Second, a straightforward yet effective representation learning mechanism, namely spectral-attention, is incorporated into ACT. Spectral-attention utilizes the intra-spectral and inter-spectral correlations to extract spectral representations. Empirical results show that ACT has achieved competitive results in 9 analytical tasks covering applications across pharmacy, chemistry, and agriculture. Compared with existing networks, ACT reduces the root mean square error of prediction (RMSEP) by more than 20% in calibration transfer tasks. These results indicate that DL methods in IR spectroscopy could benefit from the integration of prior knowledge in analytical chemistry.
