This paper is concerned with understanding the connection between the existing Internet congestion control algorithms and the optimal control theory. The available resource allocation controllers are mainly devised to derive the state of the system to a desired equilibrium point and, therefore, they are oblivious to the transient behavior of the closed-loop system. To take into account the real-time performance of the system, rather than merely its steady-state performance, the congestion control problem should be solved by maximizing a proper utility functional as opposed to a utility function. For this reason, this work aims to investigate what utility functionals the existing congestion control algorithms maximize. In particular, it is shown that there exist meaningful utility functionals whose maximization leads to the celebrated primal, dual and primal/dual algorithms. An implication of this result is that a real network problem may be solved by regarding it as an optimal control problem on which some practical constraints, such as a real-time link capacity constraint, are imposed.

On Earth, biology, hydrology, and geology are interlinked such that certain types of life are often associated with specifi c conditions, including rock type, pressure, temperature, and chemistry. Life on Earth has established itself in diverse and extreme niches, presenting the possibility that Mars, too, may hold records of fossilized and/or extant life in diverse environments. Geologic, paleohydrologic, and climatic conditions through the evolution of Mars are similar in many respects to conditions occurring during the evolution of Earth and, as such, may point to environments on Mars with potential to have supported living systems. Here, we discuss examples of those Martian settings. Such extraterrestrial environments should be targeted by international robotic and/or manned missions to explore potential fossilized or extant life on Mars. © 2011 Geological Society of America.

A dynamic simulation method for non-linear systems based on genetic programming （GP） and bond graphs （BG） was developed to improve the design of nonlinear multi-domain energy conversion systems. The article presents a new method for scheduling HTTP requests at the front of the Internet service, in a way that the service time of the whole WWW pages wouldn't exceed the service time imposed by the service provider. In this study, a real-time wireless embedded EEG-based brain computer interface (BCI) system was developed for drowsiness detection in a realistic driving task. Accidents caused by driver's drowsiness behind the steering wheel have a high fatality rate because of the marked decline in the driver's abilities of perception, recognition, and vehicle control abilities while sleepy. Therefore, real-time drowsiness monitoring is important to avoid traffic accidents. In this study, an embedded EEG-based BCI system which includes a wireless physiological signal acquisition module and an embedded signal processing module was designed, and a real-time drowsiness detection algorithm based on our unsupervised approach was implemented in the embedded signal processing module. EEG signal would be monitored and analyzed by the embedded signal processing module, and the warning tone would be triggered to prevent traffic accidents when the drowsiness condition occurred.

Extracting or estimating skeletal hand/finger forces using surface electro myographic (sEMG) signals poses many challenges due to cross-talk, noise, and a temporal and spatially modulated signal characteristics. Normal sEMG measurements are based on single sensor data. In this paper, array sensors are used along with a proposed sensor fusion scheme that result in a simple Multi-Input-Single-Output (MISO) transfer function. Experimental data is used along with system identification to find this MISO system. A Genetic Algorithm (GA) approach is employed to optimize the characteristics of the MISO system. The proposed fusion-based approach is tested experimentally and indicates improvement in finger/hand force estimation.

Internet users rely on the good capabilities of TCP/IP networks for dealing with congestion. Classic algorithms, such as drop tail or even RED, do not give good results under many situations. The network delay and the number of users fluctuate from one moment to the next. Predictive control can deal with these conditions so performance can be improved. This paper presents how predictive control, with on-line linearized models, performs better than PID or classic predictive control when dealing with control congestion, because changes in the network delay and the current number of users can be updated in the model. Non-linear simulations illustrate the advantages and disadvantages of the various methods under different working scenarios.

This paper deals with the iterative learning control (ILC) problem for uncertain time-delay systems (TDS). In order to ensure monotonic convergence of the ILC process, a sufficient condition is developed using an H ∞ -based framework. It shows that under this framework, the convergence condition is enabled to be delay-dependent and have a formulation in terms of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). Moreover, formulas for the updating law design can be derived by directly solving LMIs. A numerical example is provided to verify that the delay-dependent condition in LMI forms is effective in producing monotonically convergent ILC algorithms.

Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to propose an automatic pattern matching template generating method for the automatic optical inspection system in TFT LCD assembly and positioning process, to improve the conventional image technology. Besides, focusing on integrating the image system with the existing control system, the double aligner mark searching time is decreased to reduce the working time of the integrated system. Design/methodology/approach - The improved pattern matching method of genetic algorithm was adopted, including setting for template image selecting, encoding, calculating fitness function, pattern matching, template generating and genetic algorithm steps. The predetermined pixels were selected from the target template based on the minimum difference to the block image to be tested by utilizing the genetic algorithm, and the other pixels which have not been selected were neglected. Findings - The selected pixels were encoded for recording by sequence mode, and then the target template and the image to be tested were compared based on the calculated fitness function. This method has the advantages of using the fitness function to reduce the searching time, with the help of genetic algorithm to find the optimal target template, and saving memory space by recording target template based on the sequence mode. Research limitations/implications - The genetic algorithm used in this study is a kind of optimal tool free from gradient data. As long as the fitness function and after continuous iteration are determined, the optimal solution can be found out, and then the optimal target template can be generated. Practical implications - This system uses fitness function to reduce the pattern matching time. Plural pixels are preset inside the target template, and its fitness function value is calculated. When the target template is compared with the image to be tested, only the fitness function value (also the difference of the plural pixels) is calculated
