The simulation of congestion control algorithms of TCP networks is discussed in this paper. Simulation is a widespread procedure for testing and understanding how real systems evolve. Internet has a great impact in our society. Everyone wants fast and reliable links, but sometimes congestion happens because the network delay and the number of users fluctuate from one moment to the next. There are different approaches for dealing with congestion: classical (such as drop tail or RED) or process control techniques (PID, predictive control or fuzzy). Future engineers need to learn about this topic. So it seems logical to use simulation, but which tools should we use? This paper presents a comparison using three different simulation programs: Matlab, EcosimPro and ns-2. Results show that, depending on what we want, we should choose different tools.

The paper deal with a mobile wireless connected devices and the problem of their slow wireless connection. The main area of interest is in a model of data prebuffering based system enhancement for locating and tracking users of our control system inside the buildings. The experimental framework prototype uses a WiFi network infrastructure to let a mobile device determine its indoor position. User location is used for data pre-buffering and pushing information from server to user's PDA. All server data are saved as artifacts (together) with its position information in building. The accessing of prebuffered data on mobile device can highly improve response time needed to view large multimedia data. On mobile device the SQL Server CE database is used. Mobile device operate with Windows Mobile 6.0 operation system which is real time. All operations in such mobile clients are deterministic.

Learning system is a method to approximate an underlying function from a finite observation data. Since batch learning has a disadvantage in dealing with large data set, online learning is proposed to prevent the computational expensive. Iterative method called Stochastic Gradient Descent (SGD) is applied to solve for the underlying function on reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces (RKHSs). To use SGD in time-varying environment, a learning rate is adjusted by Stochastic Meta Descent (SMD). The simulation results show that SMD can follow shifting and switching target function whereas the size of model can be restricted using sparse solution.

Dynamic programming provides a method to solve hybrid optimal control problems. This contribution extends existing numerical methods originally developed for purely continuous systems, to a class of hybrid systems with autonomous as well as controlled switching behavior. The hybrid dynamics is approximated by a locally consistent discrete Markov decision process. The original optimal control problem is then reformulated for the Markov decision process and solved by standard dynamic programming methods. The convergence of the discrete approximation to the original problem is ensured. The viability of the numerical scheme is illustrated by a two gear transmission system used previously in literature.

Abstract In this paper Principal Components Analysis (PCA) is used for detecting faults in a simulated wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). Diagnosis tasks are treated using Fisher discriminant analysis (FDA). Both techniques are multivariate statistical techniques used in multivariate statistical process control (MSPC) and fault detection and isolation (FDI) perspectives. PCA reduces the dimensionality of the original historical data by projecting it onto a lower dimensionality space. It obtains the principal causes of variability in a process. If some of these causes change, it can be due to a fault in the process. FDA provides an optimal lower dimensional representation in terms of a discriminant between classes of data, where, in this context of fault diagnosis, each class corresponds to data collected during a specific and known fault. A discriminant function is applied to diagnose faults using data collected from the plant.

The paper deals with a general form of a mathematical model of a three-phase electric circuit characteristics. A form of the model with using dimensionless variables is discussed. In general form of the linear AC circuit, the steady-state circuit characteristics are nonlinear functions of circuit elements and signals parameters. The linearized model of the asymmetrical circuit with linear loads is derived in matrix-vector notation. The model consists of sensivity function of the circuit-phase currents versus load voltages, supply voltages, phase inductances and supply voltages frequency described analytically in form of matrices or vector. As reference the symmetric (balanced) three-phase circuit was used. An example of application of this model to the determination of the inductances of the circuit is given.
