The limitation of network bandwidth leads to data dropout of communication which degrades performance of NCS. For motion control system implemented with NCS, the missing interpolation messages will cause motion error and it can be compensated by applying the message estimator. However, the distribution of the missing data will be more relevant to motion accuracy in NCS even with the same dropout rate. This paper proposes a novel performance index, the short-window dropout quantities (SDQ) which is an estimation of both the data dropout rate and the messing message distribution, for the motion NCS. Furthermore, based on the estimation of SDQ. the intelligent motion message estimator (IMM) is proposed in this paper to effectively compensate for data dropout effect. Finally, simulation results of a multi-axis motion NCS indicate that the present IMM significantly improves motion contouring accuracy compared with the 1-delay estimator or the Taylor estimator.

Current research in the area of mobile agents' security mainly deals with protection and security for agents and agents' runtime platforms. Mobile agent systems usually do not provide an extensive security methodology for the entire agent's life cycle, from agent's creation to its deployment and execution. In this paper we propose a comprehensive secure system for deployment of mobile agents. The system provides methodology that spans a number of phases in agent's lifetime: it starts from agent creation and ends with agent's execution. It addresses classification, validation, publishing, discovery, adoption, authentication and authorization of agents. Our system is based on secure web services and uses RBAC XACML policies and SAML protocol.

This paper proposed a graph-based clustering approach for gene expression data. The new method is based on regulatory network graph obtained from gene expression data. Clustering is performed based on the topological features of the graph which characterizes the regulatory relationships between genes, which is different from the conventional methods that simply group genes with similar gene expression patterns. The performance of the proposed method is assessed by real gene expression data clustering. The results clearly show that the proposed method can give higher accuracies in clustering recognition than the traditional approaches which are based on similarity between gene expression patterns.

A New Method for Linear Dimensionality Reduction

A novel class based linear dimensionality reduction method is proposed, called Class-Wise Correlation Preserving Projection (CWCPP). In CWCPP, the relation among the original gene expression data is preserved according to a certain kind of similarity between data points, which takes special consideration of both the correlation information and the class information. Different from the traditional method, i.e., Fisher Linear Discriminant Analysis (FLD), CWCPP utilizes correlation information to guide the procedure of linear projection directions searching. Experiments on yeast gene expression data and NCI gene expression data are performed to test and evaluate the proposed algorithm.

One of the important requirements for operational planning of electrical utilities is the prediction of hourly load up to several days, known as short term load forecasting (STLF). Considering the effect of its accuracy on system security and also economical aspects, there is an on-going attention toward putting new approaches to the task. Recently, neuro fuzzy modeling has played a successful role in various applications over nonlinear time series prediction. This paper presents a neuro-fuzzy model for the application of short-term load forecasting. This model is identified through locally liner model tree (LoLiMoT) learning algorithm. The model is compared to a multilayer perceptron and Kohonen classification and intervention analysis. The models are trained and assessed on load data extracted from EUNITE network competition.

Long-term forecasting of load demand is necessary for the correct operation of electric utilities. There is an on-going attention toward putting new approaches to the task. Recently, Neurofuzzy modeling has played a successful role in various applications over nonlinear time series prediction. This paper presents a neurofuzzy model for long-term load forecasting. This model is identified through Locally Linear Model Tree (LoLiMoT) learning algorithm. The model is compared to a multilayer perceptron and hierarchical hybrid neural model (HHNM). The models are trained and assessed on load data extracted from a North-American electric utility.

This study presents an effective system for detecting and tracking moving vehicles in nighttime traffic scene for traffic surveillance. The proposed method identifies vehicles based on detecting and locating vehicle headlights and taillights by using the techniques of image segmentation and pattern analysis. First, to effectively extract bright objects of interest, a fast bright-object segmentation process based on automatic multilevel histogram thresholding is applied on the nighttime road-scene images. This automatic multilevel thresholding approach can provide robustness and adaptability for the detection system to be operated well under various illumination conditions at night. The extracted bright objects are processed by a spatial clustering and tracking procedure by locating and analyzing the spatial and temporal features of vehicle light patterns, and then identifying and classifying the moving cars and motorbikes in the traffic scenes. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach is feasible and effective for vehicle detection and identification in various nighttime environments for traffic surveillance.

This paper describes an embedded workflow framework (EMWF) that enables flexible personal and home automation and assistive devices and service and social robots (collectively referred to as SISARL) to be built on workflow architecture The process definition language supported by EMWF is called SISARL-XPDL. It consists of a subset of the WfMC standard XML Process Definition Language (XPDL) 2.0, together with elements that implement common mechanisms for robot behavior coordination. SISARL-XPDL definitions of workflows are first translated into standard XPDL and execution directives and then are parsed either directly into binary workflow scripts for execution or into intermediate scripts in C. EMWF provides workflow engines for Linux and Windows CE platforms. The engines are written in C in order to keep their memory footprint and runtime overhead small. Performance data show that the overheads introduced by the engine and workflow data are tolerable for most SISARL devices.

This paper presents the design and stiffness modeling of a soft multi-fingered hand. First, the structure and the kinematics of one soft finger are introduced. The finger has a soft feature by using a spring as its backbone. Using five soft fingers, a multi-fingered hand is designed. Secondly, the stiffness modeling of the soft finger is conducted to measure the softness of the finger mechanism as well as estimate the actuator size. Finally, usefulness of the multi-fingered hand is demonstrated through experimental work grasping rigid and flexible objects.

Recently, permanent magnet synchronous motors are applied to various applications such as electric vehicle, aerospace, medical service, and military applications due to several outstanding characteristics. Because of the importance of high reliable operation in these areas, many researches which are related to the fault detection and diagnosis of inverter systems are conducted. In this paper, a new simple fault detection method of voltage source inverter for permanent magnet synchronous motor is proposed. The feasibility of the proposed method is proved by simulation and experiment. By the simulation and experiments, rapid detection characteristic of the proposed method has been proved without any additional voltage sensor.
