An analysis of the effect of parasitics and reverse recovery on harmonic distortion in a class D audio amplifier is performed in this paper. The error sources under investigation are modelled empirically as an amplitude error, after which an existing strategy based on Newton's numerical method is implemented to simulate its effect within the audible band. The results are compared to existing timing errors to determine its degree of dominance.

Bioprocesses which are involved in producing different pharmaceutical products may conveniently be classified according to the mode chosen for the process: cither batch, fed-batch or continuous. From the control engineer's viewpoint they are fed-batch processes, which present the greatest challenge to get a pure product with a high concentration. Complicated dynamics, nonline-arity and non-stationarity make controlling them a very delicate task. pH control of bioreactors has been an interesting problem from both implementation and controller design points of view. This is particularly true if the complex microbial interactions yield significant nonlinear behavior. When this occurs, conventional control strategies may not succeed and more advanced strategies need to be suggested. This paper discusses model predictive control (MPC) based on a detailed unstructured model for penicillin production in a fed-batch fermentor. The approach used here is to use quadratic cost function for pH regulation, while taking into account control signal fluctuations in the optimization block. The result of applying the obtained controller and also its sensitivity to disturbance have been displayed and compared with the results of an auto-tuned PID controller used in previous works. The merit of this method is its low computational cost of solving the optimization problem, while leading to a closed form controller as well.

For concurrent consideration of reliability and safety of manufacturing systems on the one hand, and flexibility and performance on the other, a specialized control architecture was proposed recently. It consists of a strategic controller for online computing (sub-)optimal control strategies under consideration of dynamic models, safety specifications, and learned knowledge. The second building block is an operational controller for providing certified safety when dealing with behaviors that are not completely predictable, for instance in case of faults. This paper extends the architecture by a specific technique for the strategic controller: For the case of an intelligent manufacturing system which reacts adaptively to a human operator, control trajectories for a robot arm are computed online such that collision with the operator is excluded. The computation is based on solving a mixed-integer programming problem that takes a dynamic safety area around the operator into account as constraint.

This paper addresses a stable vision system for indoor moving robot using encoder information. The proposed system uses encoder signals to calculate robot motion and rotates the camera in order to fix the target on the image frame during locomotion. Since the calculation of rotating angle of the camera is based on the integration of encoder data over time, this leads to the unbounded accumulation of error. To prevent the error accumulation, vision sensor signals are used periodically to compensate for the errors. The resulting standard deviations of the rotated camera angle error were 0.94°, 0.32° and 1.55° for rotation, translation and rotation-translation combined motion while the robot heading angles have standard deviations of 23.27°, 16.56° and 48.53°, respectively. However, the system shows performance degradation in slippery ground conditions. In our experiments the errors have trends to increase with the decrease of friction coefficient between the ground and the robot wheels. Future work should overcome this problem using additional sensors such as inertial measurement units (IMUs) that are able to detect the correct robot motion even in the case of slip disturbance.

Polynomials are one of the most powerful functions that have been used in many fields of mathematics such as curve fitting and regression. Low order polynomials are desired for their smoothness, good local approximation and interpolation. Being smooth, they can be used to locally approximate almost any derivable function. This means that when linear functions fail in approximation (e.g. where the first order Taylor expansion equals zero) polynomial functions can be used in local approximation, such that one can achieve better estimations at extremums. In this paper, application of polynomial kernel functions in locally linear neurofuzzy models is shown. Using polynomial kernels in local models, better local approximations in prediction of chaotic time series such as Mackey-Glass is achieved, and the capability of the neurofuzzy network is enhanced.

Mining ventilation is an interesting example of a large scale system with high environmental impact where advanced control strategies can bring major improvements. The challenge in this work is focused on the mining ventilation since as much as 50 % or more of the energy consumed by the mining process may go into the ventilation (including heating the air). It is clear that investigating automatic control solutions and minimizing the amount of pumped air to save energy consumption (proportional to the cube of airflow quantity) is of great environmental and industrial interest.

Auditory perception is one of the most important functions for robotics applications. Microphone arrays are widely used for auditory perception in which the spatial structure of microphones is usually known. In practice, microphone array calibration can be tedious and other devices or means are required. The structure from sound (SFS) approach addresses the problem of simultaneously localizing a set of microphones and a set of acoustic events that provides a great flexibility to calibrate different setups of microphone arrays. However, the existing method does not take measurement uncertainty into account and does not provide uncertainty estimates of the SFS results. In this paper, we propose a probabilistic structure from sound (PSFS) approach using the unscented transform in which the uncertainties of the PSFS results are also available. In addition, a probabilistic sound source localization approach using the PSFS results is provided to improve sound source localization accuracy. The ample results of simulation and experiments using low-cost, off-the-shelf microphones demonstrate the feasibility and performance of the proposed PSFS approach. © 2009 VSP.

Need of blood pressure measurement is usable in wide spectrum of applications from physicians offices to home care applications. Many types of blood pressure measurement devices can be bought in electronics shops. All such devices are measurement devices which need to be in contact with human body (hand or foot mainly). Further they allow only one measurement per several minutes interval (typically 10 minutes). Our goal is to develop a small device for noninvasive continuous measurement of blood pressure. This device must be a small battery powered embedded system which measures a blood pressure during a long time period and sends this information to remote operator's stations. In this station the analysis of receiving video data is made for several types of usage. In current state we develop a small device to scan a video or a set of images with the NIR (Near Infra Red) CCD camera. The video data are transferred by wireless connection to the computer where they are analyzed. The first results provide an indication to be a right way to obtain exact continuous blood pressure information. In the future there exists a way to integrate this blood pressure measurement system to concurrently developed biotelemetric system architecture for patients and physicians called Guardian. For position monitoring in outdoor areas there is developed GPS module which informs about patient location and brings very precise time basis for other measuring modules of Guardian system and time synchronization.

Paper shows direct connection and implementation way of designed control schémas of prepared applications to an industrial WinPLC. Paper deals with industrial realization of feedback control of demanding applications on their control, control algorithms and visualization together with design, implementation and real time control from MATLAB/Simulink Environment. Described is a way to produce a permanent solution in control applications that are fully prepared, designed and implemented directly from MATLAB/Simulink to the target control platform. As a part, the mentioned solution is using a multiplatform control system REX as a bridge between MATLAB and target platforms. These methods allow minimizing costs of development of control of applications, because it produces target permanent realizations in comparison to classical development methods that usually need expensive real time measurement cards and produce only one purpose development solution. As next benefit the application is created for visualization the data from RT database during the measurement and control process. This last benefit produce an interesting data from real control process to give a next reason to use of WinCon solution.

For an oversampled linear phase (LP) perfect reconstruction filter banks with lattice structure, the synthesis FB is not unique. However, existing methods to choose a synthesis FB for ldquooptimalrdquo noise reduction may destroy the linear phase and lattice structure property. This paper studies the noise reduction design problem for oversampled filter banks (FBs) preserving lattice structure. Both the optimal design and worst case design are considered, where the former caters for the noise with known power spectral density (PSD), and the latter for the noise with unknown PSD. Explicit formula for the former and LMI-based algorithms for the latter are provided.
