Both the operating environments represent hardware abstraction layer extensions to general-purpose operating systems, and make possible to create a real-time system according to the POSIX 1003.13 PSE 54 profile (multipurpose system). This paper proposes a novel control for voltage source inverters connected to the grid. The control scheme is based on the droop method, and it uses some estimated variables from the grid such as the voltage and the frequency, and the magnitude and angle of the grid impedance. Hence, the inverter is able to inject independently active and reactive power to the grid. The controller provides a proper dynamics decoupled from the grid impedance. Simulation results are provided in order to show the feasibility of the control proposed.

In this paper we consider the infimal signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) required for stabilisation of a linear time invariant (LTI) scalar unstable plant over a class of additive coloured Gaussian noise channels. We apply recent results in the literature to obtain the feedback capacity of such a class of channels. We prove that the infimal SNR constrained LTI solution, when dealing with a scalar unstable plant, does achieve a channel feedback capacity equal to the infimal rate of transmission required for stability. The optimality of such channel feedback capacity is a non trivial result since we consider additive 1st order moving average (MA) and autoregressive moving average (ARMA) coloured noise.

Most real world systems operate in continuous time. However, to store, analyze or transmit data from such systems the signals must first be sampled. Consequently there has been on-going interest in sampled data models for continuous time systems. The emphasis in the literature to-date has been on three main issues namely the impact of folding, sampled zero dynamics and the associated model error quantification. Existing error analyses have almost exclusively focused on unnormalized performance. However, in many applications relative errors are more important. For example, high performance controllers tend to invert the system dynamics and consequently relative errors underpin closed loop performance issues including robustness and stability. This motivates us to examine the relative errors associated with several common sampled data model types. This analysis reveals that the inclusion of appropriate zero dynamics is essential to ensure that the relative error converges to zero as the sampling period is reduced.

We also obtain a closed form expression for the squared H 2 norm of a partial fraction expansion with repeated stable poles. As an application we use the H ⊥ 2 result to extend the closed form solution of the discrete-time linear time invariant (LTI) signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) constrained problem to the case of repeated unstable poles in the plant model.

The telecare system has become usable and accessible nowadays due to the development of information and communication technology. Its daily use has been made possible in long-term care through the use of wireless sensor networks. Unfortunately, the person in need of care may not be able to operate this sensor by him/herself. He/she is only able to turn this sensor on and off. Furthermore, he/she may be unconscious when an alert message is transferred. Against this backdrop, this paper therefore focuses on how the sensor can be automatically turned on to begin measuring physiological signals. In this research, a bidirectional sensor controlling design for a wireless sensor network with a Web-based interface using the Internet was proposed. Rich Internet application (RIA) technology was used to make a Web client-side user interface (UI) easier to use. Scalable vector graphics (SVG) technology, recommended by World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), was adopted to achieve dynamic charting of the browser. The combination of Ajax and SVG technology provides real-time interactivity and improves user experience on the use of the healthcare system. A complete system which includes the sensors, the wireless physiological detection network, the Web and database server, and the client side user interface was developed. To prove system reliability and accessibility, experiment and performance test of a real case were conducted.

The Direct Weight Optimization (DWO) approach is a nonparametric estimation approach that has appeared in recent years within the field of nonlinear system identification. In previous work, all function classes for which DWO has been studied have included only continuous functions. However, in many applications it would be desirable also to be able to handle discontinuous functions. Inspired by the bilateral filter method from image processing, such an extension of the DWO framework is proposed for the smoothing problem. Examples show that the properties of the new approach regarding the handling of discontinuities are similar to the bilateral filter, while at the same time DWO offers a greater flexibility with respect to different function classes handled.

The medical costs for elderly people in Taiwan have increased largely due to the increasing number of aging people in the country. To meet the goals and requirements of the National Health Insurance (NHI), designing and providing a program which would reduce the unnecessary medical services demanded by elderly people is needed. In this research, a conceptual service model of the telecare system applied in Taiwan is discussed and presented. The service model is discussed in three dimensions, namely, service, delivery, and content. In the service dimension, the services provided by telecare service should be accessible and responsible. In the delivery dimension, telecare service should be highly interactive and with high usability. Finally, in the content dimension, the content of telecare service must be individualized and based on userspsila needs. Most importantly, it must be comprehensive and authentic. Telecare service can be used as an important tool to assist nurses in nursing homes. It should be delivered by skilled nurses to increase the confidence of users. In district hospitals, doctors can substitute the weekly telecare service for traditional medical service. Therefore, the costs of NHI can be reduced. Moreover, the accessibility and interactivity of telecare service will give users greater satisfaction. The cooperation of nursing homes and district hospitals in the telecare service will not only improve the quality of long-term care but will also pave the way for the practice of telecare service in Taiwan.

Developing a practical fault diagnosis system for a power plant thermal system is important in ensuring safe and reliable operation of the whole power generation unit. It is a difficult task due to the complex structure of the thermal system and the variable operating points of the system. Although artificial neural networks are very efficient in thermal system fault diagnosis, their applications for fault diagnosis usually consider only a single operating point (usually at the full rated load). Thus a fuzzy neural network approach for thermal system fault diagnosis under different operating points is investigated in this paper. An extended fuzzy fault symptom calculation method suitable for different load is discussed. The feedwater heater system of a 300 MW coal-fired power generation unit is taken as a fault diagnosis example. Several diagnosis tests for different faults under different operating points are carried out on a full-scope simulator of the power unit. The results under different operating points demonstrate the fault diagnosis ability of the fuzzy neural network method.
