We consider the stability of the feedback connection of a linear time invariant (LTI) plant with a static nonlinearity expressed by a certain class of quadratic program. By generalizing the class of candidate Lyapunov functions we improve on existing results in the literature. A Lyapunov function is constructed via the S-procedure from quadratic constraints established using the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) conditions. The stability criterion can be expressed as a linear matrix inequality (LMI) condition. We discuss some simple examples that demonstrate the improved results.

This work introduces a modified endoscope structure that employs a spring as its backbone. This design allows backdrivability of the mechanism due to the flexibility of the spring structure. Furthermore, the full 3 DOF motion including compression and two rotational motions can be realized. The geometric analysis, kinematic modeling, and actuator sizing for this device are conducted. Both simulation and experiment have been performed to show the effectiveness of this device.

In this article there are described applications of embedded systems for diagnostic and maintenance planning in healthcare applications. During the recent years, there was a rapid growth in the development of maintenance telemedicine systems and monitoring devices for patients with chronic diseases and those requiring continuous telemonitoring treatments. However most of these systems only provide telemonitoring services or basic information about the health condition of the patients. For this reason an intelligent home health care embedded system that can provide to the patients with diagnosis their health status at home is developed. As a result different types of pluggable medical transducers for patients with different illnesses can be flexibly connected to the interface of the embedded system. The home care systems are possible to use as predictive diagnostic systems.

In this paper, a control scheme applied to distributed UPSs forming a microgrid is proposed. The control architecture consists of two levels of hierarchy: 1) the P/Q droop control method of every UPS unit and 2) the management of the microgrid through the control of the setpoints of the units, and the connection or disconnection to the utility mains.

The Electroencephalogram (EEG) dynamics which relate to motion sickness are studied in this paper. Instead of providing visual or motion stimuli to the subjects to induce motion sickness, we employed a dynamic virtual-reality (VR) environment in our research. The environment consisted of a 3D surrounding VR scene and a motion platform providing a realistic situation. This environment provided the advantages of safety, low cost, and the realistic stimuli to induce motion sickness. The Motion Sickness Questionnaire (MSQ) was used to assess the sickness level, and the EEG effects on the subjects with high sickness levels were investigated using the independent component analysis (ICA). The fake-epoch extraction was then applied to the nausea-related independent components. Finally we employed the Event-Related Spectral Perturbation (ERSP) technology on the fake-epochs in order to determine the EEG dynamics during motion sickness. The experimental results show that most subjects experienced an 8-10Hz power increase to their motion sickness-related phenomena in the parietal and motor areas. Moreover, some subjects experienced an EEG power increase of 18-20Hz in their synchronized responses recorded in the same areas. The motion sickness-related effects and regions can be successfully obtained from our experimental results.

According to the features of the configuration and color information on the cancer cells, an adaptive automatic threshold segmentation based on the RGB and HIS color spaces is presented, which is available to segment suspected cancer cells and nucleus from the complex backgrounds in the microscopic images. The edges of the suspected cancer cells and nucleus are detected by using Canny operator. Using the technology of eight-chain code tracking, the feature values of suspected cancer cells are extracted. The feature values consists of the perimeter, the area, the height, the width, the circularity, the rectangularity, the extension and the area ratio between the nucleus and the cytolympth. Based on feature values, a two-round recognition scheme combined with morphologic and colourometry is proposed to recognize and classify the pathological and normal cells. The results show that the proposed algorithm can efficiently segment cell images and receive higher accuracy of cancer cell diagnosis.

A new two-layer multi-objective compatible control algorithm is proposed for a class of control problems with two conflicting control objectives, control error and energy consumption. The first layer is devoted to obtaining a user's desired controlled objectives region, assured to be not only achievable but also Pareto-optimal. The second layer is devoted to designing an effective controller by optimizing the most important controlled objective (such as the energy consumption), subject to system constraints from the controlled objectives region in the first layer. This control algorithm provides an effective robust controller design method for multi-objective control problems with precise models and uncertain initial conditions. Simulations illustrate that the two-layer multi-objective compatible control (MOCC) algorithm has some advantages over traditional multi-objective control methods.

In this paper, a recurrent functional-link-based neural fuzzy system (RFLNFS) is proposed for prediction of time sequence and skin color detection. The proposed RFLNFS model uses functional link neural network as the consequent part of fuzzy rules. The RFLNFS model can generate the consequent part of a nonlinear combination of the input variables. The recurrent network is embedded in the RFLNFS by adding feedback connections in the second layer, where the feedback units act as memory elements. An online learning algorithm, which consists of structure learning and parameter learning, is also presented. Finally, the RFLNFS is applied to two simulations. The simulation results of the dynamic system modeling have shown that the RFLNFS model can solve the temporal problem and the RFLNFS model has superior performance than other models

Providing required quality of water delivered to the consumers is still a challenging operational task at drinking water distribution systems. Water quality meets the quality requirements at the outputs from the treatment plants but it may significantly deteriorate when travelling throughout the system and become not usable at the consumption nodes. It becomes then necessary to introduce secondary chlorine disinfection at certain nodes within the system network. The booster stations are located at these quality control nodes to inject the chlorine so that the quality requirements are met throughout the network, including the consumption nodes. The integrated quality and quantity optimized control can then be safely carried out in the system. The paper proposes a method for allocation of the booster stations such that a desired trade off between several objectives is robustly achieved. An advanced genetic solver of the derived optimization task is applied to determine the optimized allocation. The method is illustrated by application to the case study system.

When the Stewart Platform mechanism is modified to have three RRPS type struts each of which is assumed to have an active prismatic joint and to be constrained by an additional serial passive PPPRRR type subchain, the modified mechanism could be reconfigured as one of various types of the non-redundant 3-degree-of-freedom mechanisms depending on which three joints of the passive PPPRRR subchain are locked and unlocked during real operation. This type of modified Stewart Platform mechanisms manifest a distinctive feature: that is, the modified mechanism could be reached to whole six-degree-of-freedom output workspace by properly controlling lock and unlock conditions of the corresponding number of joints among six passive joints of a PPPRRR serial subchain only with three active prismatic joints in struts. In this paper, this advantageous feature is investigated and verified through simulation. For that purpose, trajectory planning of the modified 3-degrees-of-freedom Stewart platform mechanism in static environments where obstacles are sparsely placed is studied. The objective of the trajectory planning is to find the path which could maintain good kinematic isotropic property while avoiding obstacles and switch to better 3-degrees-of-freedom configurations along the trajectory if necessary, for the given both initial and final configurations of the robot in six-degrees-of-freedom operational space. To find such a path, Q-learning algorithm which is one of reinforcement learning methods is employed.
