An anti-windup controller modification is implemented in control system design for a model of the longitudinal dynamics of an air-breathing hypersonic vehicle. Anti-windup control allows the input constraints to be considered explicitly in the design of linear controllers to track a reference trajectory for the vehicle velocity, altitude, and angle of attack. The presence of anti-windup alleviates the need of keeping large penalties on the magnitude of the control input to avoid the occurrence of saturation. This, in turn, allows tighter tuning of the controller gains to obtain faster and more accurate trajectory tracking. The paper employs recent developments in anti-windup design to deal with the presence of exponentially unstable dynamics, which are typically encountered in air-breathing vehicle models. Simulation results on a fully nonlinear model are presented to validate the controller design. Copyright © 2006 by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc. All rights reserved.

An adaptive predictive control method is presented for nonlinear discrete system by introducing multi-layer recursive method into the predictive control strategy. In this method, nonlinear system is substituted with a time-varying linear system firstly, and then multi-layer recursive is used to identify and to forecast the varied parameters in order to get the predictive output of system model. At last, adaptive predictive control is designed for the original nonlinear system. The simulation results show the effectiveness of the presented method. © 2006 IEEE.

Recently, a capsule endoscope has been developed to observe images from the inside of intestine. Such a capsule endoscope does not have locomotion or hold method. To get proper diagnosis and medication, it is necessary to control the capsule from outside to guide locomotion. The designed and implemented capsule has feasibility to contract the small intestine by electrical stimuli through the electrodes. When the small intestine is contracted by electrical stimuli, the capsule can move to opposite direction, which means the capsule can go up and down in the small intestine. The implemented stimuli capsule always monitors excessive energy transmission and automatically shuts down the electrical stimuli to make it more secure. Additionally, the stimuli capsule goes on standby mode to save the battery, and it can be reset by comparator circuit which is connected to stimulus electrodes. To verify the design and implement the stimuli capsule, in-vitro experiments were performed with pig's small intestine.

s a single service provider (leader, in a Stackelberg game framework) and multiple users (followers) which could be of different types. Depending on whether the type of a particular user is private information (only to that user), or public information (shared with all users as well as the service provider), or whether we have the intermediate case where this is common (shared) information among the users but not shared with the service provider, one can introduce and study the equilibria of different types of games, covering the entire gamut from complete information to incomplete information games. We undertake such a study in this paper, with general utility functions for the players and general distributions for user characteristics. We compare the performances of the leader and the followers under the different scenarios, and also study the asymptotic case as the user population grows. The study for the many-followers regime provides useful insight for communication network applications

Electrogastrography (EGG) is a significant reference of the myoelectric activity of the gastrointestinal tract and indicates whether it has a disease or not. There have been numerous studies of the myoelectric activity in a stomach, but only a few studies of the intestines because of the difficulty of measurement in the intestines. Recently, the technology of the biotelemetry capsule for measurement of internal information in the human digestive tract has been developed. In the current study, an EGG telemetry system using the developed biotelemetry technology was designed and implemented for measuring EGG in intestines. The EGG capsule converts the acquired EGG value to digital data, which is transmitted from the capsule to the external receiver. The performance of the telemetry capsule for the EGG monitoring in the gastrointestinal tract was verified by in-vitro animal experiments. From the experiment, it was verified that the EGG telemetry capsule can measures a slow wave in intestines.

Most of industrial processes are nonlinear, not stationary, and dynamical with at least few different time scales in their internal dynamics and hardly measured states. A biological wastewater treatment plant falls into this category. The paper considers modelling such processes for monitorning and control purposes by using State - Space Wavelet Neural Networks (SSWN). The modelling method is illustrated based on bioreactors of the wastewater treatment plant. The learning algorithms and basis function (multidimensional wavelets) are also proposed. The simulation results based on real data record are presented.

In this paper, the results from a joint industry-academia project in industrial robotic force control are presented. The extension and implementation of an external sensor system for an industrial robot system, which can be used for high-bandwidth force control, are described. Results from two industrial applications using the system are presented, a stub grinding application using a new compliant grinding end-effector integrated with the robot control system, and a deburring application with a stiff tool requiring high-bandwidth force control in six degrees of freedom. Using the system an easily reconfigurable control structure was achieved, which was able to control contact forces with a sampling bandwidth of an order of magnitude higher than for conventional robot controllers

This paper proposes an SVC compensation strategy on a real-time centralized controller for addressing small-signal instability related events in large electric power systems. The proposed system is meant to be a safety net type control strategy that will detect and mitigate small-signal stability phenomena as they emerge in the system. Specifically, it will use wide-area monitoring schemes to identify the emergence of growing or undamped oscillations related to interarea and/or local modes. The damping levels of the associated interarea and local oscillatory modes will be estimated by analyzing predefined sets of signals using Multi- Prony's method with increased observability and dependability. When the central control unit detects an oscillatory mode with low or negative damping ratio, say less than one percent, the controller will initiate strategically located static VAR compensator (SVC) devices, initially working in voltage regulation mode, into a full interarea active power damping operation for correcting the damping level of the problematic mode. This centralized wide-area controller is shown to be effective on a validated western American large- scale power system model of the August 10, 1996 blackout event.
