Iterative Learning control - What is it all about?

The main objective of this paper is to show how one can benefit from using Iterative Learning control instead of conventional feedback control. As a main result it is shown that even if the nominal plant satisfies a given uncertainty condition, there always exists ILC algorithms that can drive the tracking error monotonically to zero. This same result cannot be achieved with conventional feedback control, or by inverting a nominal model of the plant. Hence ILC offers an unique tool to invert dynamical systems with uncertainty.

In this paper, we proposed an adaptive control method which is named CMIA mediated immune algorithm) controller to control unmanned container transport using in the harbor. It is based on specific immune response of the biological immune system which is the cell-mediated immune response. It is also applied for the autonomous guided vehicle (AGV) system which is manufactured in this paper. The AGV is used for the port automation to carry container manlessly and get uncertainty and nonlinearity because of running in the outdoor. To verify performance of the proposed CMIA controller, some experiments for the control of steering of that AGV are performed. Finally, the experimental results for the control of steering and speed of AGV system illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme. These results for the proposed method also show that it has better performance than other conventional controller design methods.

Physical visible watermarks have been widely used for centuries. Now digital visible watermarks such as electronic logos find their applications in digital library, video broadcasting, and other multimedia services. Several visible watermarking techniques have been proposed in the literature, and meanwhile, some problems with visible watermarks are also under investigation. Among these problems, watermark removal and unauthorized insertion are two major concerns. We propose using an invisible watermark in visibly watermarked images to overcome these problems. When a visibly watermarked image is in question, the invisible watermark can provide appropriate ownership information. We first investigate what kind of invisible watermark is needed, and then, focus on the details of the invisible watermarking technique. The experiments have shown that the proposed algorithm can provide a very effective protection for visibly watermarked images.

The easy access and wide usage of the Internet make it more convenient for technical research and information exchange. However, malicious codes, such as Code Red, Nimda, SQL Slammer and W32/Blaster, also occur more frequently and severely than ever. These self-propagating malicious codes can invade network and paralyze normal network operation. These Internet worms could, in a very short time, cause great damage to network and information infrastructure. Therefore, Internet worms have become vital threats to network and security management. In this paper, we present a proactive responding scheme to deal with Internet worms. Based on this scheme, we designed and implemented a pro-active defending system against Internet worms. This proactive defending system will monitor network traffic, detect hosts with abnormal network behavior and isolate these hosts from the managed network. The results show that it can efficiently mitigate the impact caused by Internet worms and stop the wide-spreading of Internet worms.

In this paper, a new hybrid impulsive and switching control strategy for chaos synchronization is developed. Using switched Lyapunov functions, several new criteria for exponential stability and asymptotical stability of hybrid impulsive and switching nonlinear systems are established and, particularly, some simple sufficient conditions for driving the synchronization error to zero are proposed. A typical example, the Chua's chaotic circuit, is given for illustrating and visualizing the theoretical results.

A four-leg pulse width modulation (PWM) voltage source converter (VSC) is used to supply three phase balanced voltage even under an unbalanced load condition in three phase four wire power distribution network. A novel carrier-based modulation technique for the converter is described with the concept of an offset voltage and also is extended to so called 'discontinuous PWM (DPWM)' to minimize switching losses of VSC. As a practical application example of the four-leg VSC, a line interactive uninterruptible power supply (UPS) system is chosen. The feasibility of the proposed PWM strategies and control algorithms has been verified by the simulation and experimental results.

In an Internet-based control system, particular human operations may violate desired requirements and lead to destructive failure. For such human-in-the-loop systems, this paper extends the remote supervisory scheme by Lee and Hsu (2003) to a modular one so as to reduce the supervisor synthesis complexity. Also, remote human issued commands are guaranteed to meet required specifications. A rapid thermal process in semiconductor manufacturing systems is provided to show the practicability of the proposed approach.

This study is an effort to give a practical solution in the problem of optimizing the structure of the hierarchical mixture of experts model, which is a natural extension of the associative Gaussian mixture of experts system. We present two novel methods for optimizing such structures using genetic algorithms. Special concern is taken for reducing the computational time so as to efficiently allow the structure to "grow" while it evolves with the genetic algorithm. The main contribution of the paper lies on the efficient, topologically oriented, representations of such architectures so as to be optimized through involving genetic algorithms.

A sufficient condition is provided under which the optimal controller of a constrained optimization problem can be synthesized by combining an optimal state estimator with an optimal static state feedback. An application of a model predictive controller is considered that involves both input and state constraints in a system that is subject to stochastic disturbances.

Intelligent space (iSpace) is a space (room, corridor, or street), which has distributed sensory intelligence and it is equipped with mobile agents. In this paper new concept of the iSpace to connect distant places, over packet switched network is introduced. Experimental iSpace of Hashimoto Lab, University of Tokyo, Japan and Advanced Diagnosis Automation and control Lab, North Carolina State University, USA is connected to form an inter-continental intelligent space. Conventionally, in order to control an application over a data network, a specified control of teleoperation algorithm is usually required for controller design to compensate network delay effects. Therefore an existing controller has to be redesigned or replaced by a new controller system. This replacement process is usually costly, inconvenient, and time-consuming. In this paper, a novel methodology to enable existing controllers for networked control and teleoperation by middleware is introduced. Mobile agent located in Japan is controlled by tracking controller located in USA to show the effectiveness of the middleware methodology.
