The bacterial heat shock response refers to the mechanism by which bacteria react to a sudden increase in the ambient temperature of growth. The consequences of such an unmediated temperature increase at the cellular level is the unfolding, misfolding, or aggregation of cell proteins, which threatens the life of the cell. Cells respond to the heat stress by initiating the production of heat-shock proteins whose function is to refold denatured proteins into their native states. The heat shock response, through the elevated synthesis of molecular chaperones and proteases, enables the repair of protein damage and the degradation of aggregated proteins. In a previous work (Kurata et al., 2001), we have devised a dynamic model for the heat shock response in E. coli. In the present paper, we provide a thorough discussion of the dynamical nature of this model. We use sensitivity analysis and simulation tools to illustrate the remarkable efficiency, robustness, and stability of the heat shock response system.

In this paper, the problem of system decomposition of complex linear dynamical systems, by exploiting the similarity property, is studied. System decompositions were sought in terms of similarity hierarchical structures. Three new theoretical results were proved. A method for constructing the transformation has been derived. The conditions for such decomposition of complex linear systems are given.

Most of iterative learning control (ILC) methods requires that the relative degree of the plant is less than 2 for a linear system or the plant is passive for a non-linear system. A new model reference parametric adaptive iterative learning control using the command generator tracker (CGT) theory is proposed in this paper. The method can be applied to control a plant with a higher relative degree and it only requires to iteratively adjust n m + 2 parameters for an SISO plant. Therefore, the ILC control system is very simple. The proposed method is in the spirit of simple adaptive control which has received intensive researches during past two decades. Simulation results show the effectiveness and usefulness of the proposed method.

In this paper, the problems of isomorphic decomposition and controllability of a class of nonlinear systems possessing symmetries, on the basis of quotient systems, is studied. The isomorphic decomposition formations of these systems are derived. Finally, it is shown that controllability of the original systems can be determined by that of the subsystems, which are obtained through isomorphic decomposition. The corresponding sufficient and necessary conditions are given. Two new theoretical results have been proved.

A planar 3 DOF parallel-type micro-positioning mechanism is designed with the intention of accurate flexure hinge modeling. For this, a preliminary kinematic analysis that includes inverse kinematics, internal kinematics, and analytic stiffness modeling referenced to the task coordinate is presented. First, the revolute type of a 1 DOF flexure hinge is considered. The simulation result based on FEM, however, is not coincident to the analytic result. This is due to the minor axial elongation along the link direction that keeps the mechanism from precise positioning. To cope with this problem, a 2 DOF flexure hinge model that includes this additional motion degree as a prismatic joint is employed in part. On the basis of this model, the positional accuracy is ensured. The effectiveness of this accurate model is shown through both simulation and experimentation This work emphasizes that the precise modeling of a flexure hinge is significant to guarantee the positional accuracy of parallel micro-mechanisms using flexure hinge.

The paper analyzes global solutions to the optimal digital controller realization problem based on maximizing a finite word length (FWL) closed-loop stability measure. For each closed-loop eigenvalue, a single-pole FWL stability function is first introduced, and a single-pole FWL stability measure is then defined as the maximum of the corresponding single-pole stability function over all the controller realizations. It is shown that the minimum of the single-pole stability measures for all the closed-loop eigenvalues is an upper bound of the optimal value for the optimal realization problem. An analytical method to compute a single-pole stability measure is developed, and an expression for all the realizations which achieve a given single-pole measure is derived. When a realization, which is a solution of the minimum single-pole measure, further satisfies the condition that the values of all its single-pole stability functions are not less than the minimum single-pole measure, the minimum single-pole measure is the optimal value of the optimal realization problem and this realization is the solution for the optimal realization problem. A computationally simple algorithm is presented.

The nonlinear L/sub 2/ anti-windup framework introduced by Teel and Kapoor (1997) reduces the anti-windup synthesis problem to a state feedback synthesis problem for linear systems with input saturation and input matched L/sub 2/ disturbances. In this paper, such a state feedback is synthesized using receding horizon optimal control techniques, and its equivalent piecewise affine closed-form is computed using the techniques of Bemporad et al. (2002). The properties of the resulting anti-windup compensation scheme are analyzed in the paper, and its performance is investigated through a simulation example.

A number of algorithms has been proposed for extending ABR congestion avoidance algorithms in ATM networks to perform feedback consolidation at the branch points of multicast connections. Schemes that attempt to maximize accuracy of feedback information tend to be slow in providing feedback to the source when the conditions in the network change. Accuracy can be traded for speed by having a switch generate feedback information before it has all the necessary information from downstream paths. This can cause consolidation noise, leading to a heavy rate at the source. In this paper, we propose improved algorithm for feedback consolidation, which combines benefits from the previous algorithms with reduced overhead. The performance of the proposed algorithm and a set of previously developed algorithms are compared under a variety of conditions. Results show that the proposed algorithm exhibits a fast transient response with accurate feedback and doesn't suffer from consolidation noise. © 2001 by the International Society for computers and Their Applications. Distributed objects are increasingly becoming predominant with the widespread use of object-oriented technology. Coupled with object-oriented systems is the heterogeneity of computer systems that are interoperating together to form a large network such as the Internet. Within this distributed heterogeneous environment, objects are the main building blocks that form the communication of the distributed system. In real-time distributed environment, objects must deliver their services within given time constraints. In order to commit to performance constraints, a careful study and analysis of the software design is critical. Therefore, this research work focuses on restructuring distributed Object Oriented software to match the pipeline architecture. This technique provides the designer with a set of alternative solutions and the corresponding resource and communication cost while satisfying the system and computation constraints. The optimal solution that minimizes the system resources and the communication overheads will be also given. A search technique using genetic algorithm is used to scan the search space for the optimal software structure and the set of feasible ones. © (2001) by the International Society for computers and Their Applications All rights reserved.
