Banyan networks are commonly used as interconnection structures in ATM switches. This paper is concerned with the replication technique which was applied to the standard banyan networks. We apply this technique to the plane interconnected parallel network (PIPN) which is a switch introduced previously as a better banyan-based interconnection structure. The normalized throughput of unbuffered and buffered replicated PIPN is analyzed analytically under uniform traffic model. We apply the simulation technique to verify the analytical results under the uniform traffic model and to study the performance of different heterogeneous traffic models. The performance is shown to increase significantly when the replicated PIPN is used which supports the idea of using this switch as a new high-performance ATM switch.

In this paper, the selection of H/sub /spl infin// weighting functions for general practical applications is investigated. Uncertainty weighting functions for typical low-order plants with parametric uncertainties are derived. It is shown that H/sub /spl infin// weighting function for a general SISO plant can be obtained by the combination of these elementary low-order plants. Weighting functions of reflecting other system specifications in H/sub /spl infin// design are also investigated. Explicit weighting function expressions are given to address position and rate limits of an actuator, tracking error performance, overshoot, etc. Finally, the proposed methods are demonstrated by the roll-angle control design of a laboratory-scale model of a vertical take-off aircraft via simulation and real-time control.

Considers global and semi-global robust stabilization problems for a class of uncertain nonlinear systems and develops a new systematic tool for robust backstepping. By choosing state-dependent scaling functions in each step of the backstepping design, one can construct robust control laws for an extended class of strict feedback systems. The scaling approach to robust backstepping treats both static and dynamic uncertainty in a unified way. The method is amenable to automatic computation based on optimization, and one can thus introduce performance objectives such as instantaneous control effort minimization into the design.

A new recurrent-network-based synthesis technique for general plucked-string instruments is proposed. If is expected that the proposed technique can serve as a synthesis model as well as a systematic parameter-searching engine such that the synthetic tones can sound as close to the recorded tone as possible. Two traditional Chinese plucked-string instruments, Pipa and Qin, are introduced. A multi-stage training procedure and an improved training algorithm for the determination of synthesis parameters and excitation signal are presented. The analysis/synthesis results of the two Chinese traditional plucked-string instruments considered are shown.
