Electric vehicles are becoming increasingly popular in societies and an important part of smart grids. Utility companies should be able to provide them with vital energy as they need electric energy instead of fuel, and this is where new challenges emerge in the network. In order to avoid causing utilities to incur additional energy and economic losses, researchers have proposed smart charging as a way to provide adequate energy to vehicles. When developing a charging schedule for a fleet of EVs, special considerations are made on variables such as energy, cost, and EVs milage. In this review paper, the importance of EVs integration into smart grids is studied, and then different methods to develop EVs charging scheduling are investigated. These methods can vary from optimization algorithms to learning-based, and game theory-based approaches. Then, as the considered system consists of three main actors, including EV users, the utility operator, and aggregators, a systematic review is conducted on these actors, and objectives related to each one are analyzed. Finally, research gaps related to the problem are studied. Researchers can use this review to conduct further research on the integration of EVs into smart grids. © 2022 Budapest University of Technology and Economics. All rights reserved.

In this paper, we consider a cyber-physical manufacturing system (CPMS) scenario containing physical components (robots, sensors, and actuators), operating in a digitally connected, constrained environment to perform industrial tasks. The CPMS has a centralized control plane with digital twins (DTs) of the physical resources, computational resources, and a network manager that allocates network resources. Existing approaches for the allocation of network resources are typically fixed with respect to controller-dependent run-time specifications, which may impact the performance of physical processes. We propose a dynamic network management framework, where the network resource allocation schemes are controller-aware. The information about the controllers of the physical resources is implemented at the DT level, and metrics, such as regret bounds, take the process performance measures into account. The proposed network management schemes optimize physical system performance by balancing the shared resources between the physical assets on the plant floor, and by considering their control requirements, providing a new perspective for dynamic resource allocation. A simulation study is provided to illustrate the performance of the proposed network management approaches and compare their resource allocation performance efficiencies. © 2022 IEEE.

This paper introduces an innovative optimal control approach to achieve output tracking while incorporating H2-performance specifications in a specific class of nonlinear dynamics modeled by the Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy model (TSFM). The primary innovation lies in extending partial eigenstructure assignment to TSFM-based nonlinear systems within the framework of sliding mode control (SMC). We propose a two-step methodology for designing optimal sliding surface gains. Initially, optimal state feedback gains are computed for each rule consequence containing a linear subsystem, adhering to predetermined eigenvalues and satisfying H2-performance criteria. Subsequently, using a convex combination, the overall state feedback gain is calculated and utilized to design sliding matrix gains. The sliding matrix gains are then determined by strategically combining previously calculated state-feedback gains in a convex optimization problem. We reframe the output tracking strategy as a stabilization problem using a virtual control input and reformulate the optimization task concerning tracking state errors. This process yields state feedback gains, sliding gains, and the formulation of the virtual control input. The effectiveness of our approach is verified through comprehensive simulations, emphasizing its capability in addressing output tracking challenges within nonlinear systems. © 2013 IEEE.

In this paper, we enhance a distributed version of the well known k-means algorithm with privacy-preservation features. While ensuring that sensitive or confidential information remains undisclosed to unauthorized entities (in our case these entities are curious nodes within the network), we maintain the desirable features of the distributed algorithm: the transmitted values are quantized, which optimizes bandwidth utilization and alleviates communication bottlenecks, and nodes possess the ability to collectively determine when to terminate the algorithm, which enables the conservation of valuable resources. We introduce a novel privacy-preserving protocol that not only preserves the privacy of a node's state, but it also ensures confidentiality about its cluster affiliation (i.e., it does not reveal to curious nodes whether a node participates in the update calculation for a specific centroid value). Moreover, we precisely characterize topological conditions that guarantee privacy preservation for individual nodes. Our distributed algorithm allows the formation of exclusive clusters within a finite time frame on any static and strongly connected directed graph. © 2023 IEEE.

The quality of the digital infrastructure supporting decisions is an important factor in the preparation phase of any environmental policy action, and this quality can greatly reduce the level of transaction costs. However, the development of a solution for Coaseian bargaining raises several unsolved technical problems to be able to efficiently decrease external costs. Here, we show the recommended structure of an information and communication technology (ICT)-based software infrastructure that aims to guide relevant stakeholders to achieve environmental deals and enhance green innovations. After reviewing the existing methods, practical solutions, and economics of transaction costs, we selected the design process of a new platform. We identified the functionality modules of the ICT infrastructure with descriptions of the features. Our results demonstrated that the establishment of an ICT-based e-governance system featuring participatory modeling could efficiently reduce transaction costs based on the widely used typology of them. We found that our platform could improve the involvement of any group of stakeholders through collaboration. Furthermore, we elaborate on the assessment of risks and evaluate the potential to avoid serious risks during the implementation or operation of the system. We anticipate our paper to be an initial step in the implementation of an innovative platform for the interested parties of environmental policy actions. © The Author(s) 2024.

DC-DC conversion in electric vehicle chargers can require a single or multiple stages depending on both electrical architecture and amount of processed power. When isolation is provided by an output stage, a unidirectional isolated DC-DC converter is required. Among the possible candidates, the LLC resonant converter and the phase shifted full-bridge (FSFB) converter show several advantages which has made them preferred choices in recent literature. This paper compares the efficiency of both converters on equal basis under the variable load conditions imposed by a cycle of the conventional constant-current constant-voltage (CC-CV) charging protocol. To support the study, scale-down experimental prototypes of both converters have been implemented and evaluated in laboratory showing the superiority of the LLC resonant converter for almost the entire range of operation. © 2024 IEEE.

Ambient occlusion is a popular method to enhance the visuals of real-time applications. The generally accepted equation assumes that incoming ambient lighting is uniform in the enclosing hemisphere around the surface point. This assumption does not always hold and can cause artifacts. With screen-space techniques the artifact may not be present, because of the lack of information, but it becomes visible with more accurate methods. This is especially true for ray tracing based implementations which are widely used to create the ground truth image to measure other techniques. With recent advancements of the graphics hardware, they also found their way into real-time applications where these shortcomings were neither discussed nor addressed. In this paper we analyze the problem and demonstrate its presence in popular game engines. We also propose a ray tracing based extension to eliminate these artifact in a physically plausible way. © 2022 Budapest University of Technology and Economics. All rights reserved.

This paper describes the idea of novel approach to creating an expert system for partial discharge (PD) assessment in power transformers. The proposed system is intended to support the decision-making process regarding technical condition assessment of power transformers. The primal objective of this study is to share the idea with the academia and industry in order to find potential partners interested in practical realization of such a solution. Moreover, this paper analyzes state of the art in the field of expert systems for PD, introduces experience and competences of the research team involved in this project, and presents the results of surveys among industrial entities representing the point of view and needs of the transformer market in this matter. Results show that in most cases, contemporary PD analysis systems do not meet all the needs of their end users, and proposed expert system is sought by the industry, and would be willingly used in their practice. © 2021 IEEE.

In this article, an Active Disturbance Rejection control (ADRC) is proposed for the Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) task on a Direct Drive (DD) wind turbine. The used model takes into account the flexibility of the shaft coupling the blades' rotor with the permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG). The proposed linear control scheme offers a high degree of robustness and good tracking performance, despite the presence of significant disturbances and the fact that a large part of the dynamics is ignored and treated as an unknown disturbance. The ADRC method also avoids measuring the entire set of phase variables of the system. Realistic digital computer simulations are provided that test the validity of the approach. © 2022 IEEE.
