We introduce the problem of deceptive information retrieval (DIR) which is a conceptual extension of private information retrieval (PIR). In DIR, the user downloads a required file out of multiple files stored in a system of databases and reveals information about a different file as what was required, to the databases. In other words, the user deceives the databases in an information retrieval system by making the databases' prediction on the user-required file index incorrect with high probability. The metric of deception is defined as the prediction error probability at the databases minus the corresponding error probability of PIR. We propose a scheme to perform DIR on a system of N non-colluding databases storing K time-sensitive files, that achieves a given level of deception required, with the goal of minimizing the download cost. This scheme utilizes the time dimension present in time-sensitive (constantly updating) files to send both real and dummy queries at distinct time instances to download the required file correctly while also deceiving the databases. The proposed scheme incurs higher download costs compared to PIR for positive levels of deception required, and achieves the PIR capacity when the level of deception specified is zero. © 2024 IEEE.

The learning enhancement brought on by hands-on experience is a well-established principle. For most engineering classes, laboratory (lab) experiments make an integral part of the curriculum. In engineering education, we place a lot of significance on student participation in the labs, but we seldom make students part of the curriculum and lab development. Through active involvement in lab development, students gain higher levels of learning and understanding. It is also well established that a good lab design involves open-ended design to provide sufficient challenge to students for them to achieve cognitive learning and practical skills. Our student-developed labs provide open-ended design opportunities to prompt questioning and higher-level evaluation of the knowledge acquired in class. The lab experiences discussed in this paper were designed by an undergraduate student who completed this work through the Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities program at the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE). The paper presents the survey data gathered from students to understand their experiences and to incorporate continuous improvements in the lab experiences. © American Society for engineering Education, 2024.

A time domain discontinuous Galerkin (DGTD)-based framework is developed to analyze three-dimensional organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs). The proposed framework uses a local DG scheme to discretize the (non-linearly) coupled system of the Poisson equation (in electric potential) and the drift-diffusion (DD) equations (in charge densities) in space. To reduce the computational requirements, a dual-mesh scheme, which uses a dense mesh for the DD equations and a much coarser mesh for the Poisson equation, is used. Furthermore, an implicit-explicit time integration scheme, which allows for a significantly larger time-step size, is utilized to efficiently account for the extremely long response time of OECTs. Numerical results are provided to demonstrate the applicability and accuracy of the proposed solver. © 2022 IEEE.

Design and Fabrication of Adjustable Reflectionless Microstrip Diplexer for L-Band

In this study, an adjustable reflectionless diplexer is designed and fabricated for the Lband based on microstrip transmission lines. The proposed diplexer can separate and combine different frequencies within the L-band frequency range. The equations and theoretical process of the structure can be proved from coupling matrix and even/odd mode circuit analysis. In this design, our aim is that the proposed diplexer not only has low insertion loss and proper return loss in the channels’ stopband but also can change the channels’ frequency. The physical specifications are calculated proportionally to the central frequency based on the coupling coefficients and diagram. Also, frequency adjustability is achieved by connecting the varactor diode to the structure’s resonator. The proposed structure can be used in the frequency range of 1.6–2.2 GHz. Furthermore, the measured return losses in the stopband and passband are 8 dB and 13 dB, respectively. In this paper, all simulations are performed by ADS software. © 2022, Electromagnetics Academy. Wireless communication via unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) has drawn a great deal of attention due to its flexibility in establishing line-of-sight (LoS) communications. However, in complex urban and dynamic environments, the movement of UAVs can be blocked by trees and high-rise buildings that obstruct directional paths. This problem can be effectively addressed by employing reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS). To achieve this goal, accurate channel estimation in RIS-assisted UAV-enabled wireless communications is crucial. This paper proposes an accurate channel estimation model using long short-term memory (LSTM) for a multi-user RIS-assisted UAV-enabled wireless communications system. Simulation results showed that LSTM can effectively improve the channel estimation performance of RIS-assisted UAV-enabled wireless communications. © The Institution of engineering & Technology 2023.

This paper presents the function of the human heart by analyzing its heartbeats. We study the produced cardiac electrical signals and how they are reflected in the Electrocardiogram (ECG) signal. ECG signals are the most common way to evaluate the heart state and recognize what type of arrythmia may occur. In this paper, we introduce Zeeman's non-linear, second order mathematical model which describes the general heartbeat behavior of the human heart and generates artificial ECG signals. One of the challenges is to implement a LabVIEW program which extracts real-time ECG signals from real people. Finally, program results are taken into consideration in order to draw a conclusion about the cardiac health of those who conducted the experiment. © 2023 IEEE.

Electroencephalogram (EEG) is a non-invasive approach to measuring neural oscillations. As EEG signals are known to be non-stationary, one common approach to analyze them has been time-frequency analysis. Time-frequency distributions allow us to represent the time-varying energy content of the signals across different frequency bands. However, analyzing multichannel EEG data across multiple experimental conditions and subjects in the time-frequency domain results in highly redundant representations. In order to reduce the dimensionality and extract relevant features in the time-frequency domain, principal component analysis (PCA) has been widely utilized. Time-Frequency PCA (TF-PCA) provides a data-driven way to reduce the time-frequency surfaces into a few meaningful components. In many clinical studies, it is not only sufficient to reduce the EEG data into a few interpretable components, it is also important to discriminate between different experimental conditions or subject groups. In this paper, we extend TF-PCA by employing recently introduced contrastive PCA (cPCA) to discover low-dimensional structure that discriminates between two datasets. The proposed TF-cPCA approach is evaluated on an EEG study to discriminate between experimental conditions and brain regions from event-related potentials recorded during a cognitive control task. © 2024 IEEE.

4H-Silicon Carbide (4H-SiC) technology is well known for its superior thermal conductivity, high-temperature stability, and robustness in harsh environments. This paper presents three distinct temperature-sensing readout circuits (a PMOS array, an NMOS array, and a CMOS-based ring os-cilia tor) utilizing this technology. The readout circuits with PMOS and NMOS arrays are showing Proportional to Absolute Temperature (PTAT) behavior. For a temperature range of 25-200 ° C, these designs are showing a sensitivity of 26.8 mV/ ° C (PMOS array) and 19.60 mV/° C (NMOS array), respectively, at a VDD of 20 V. At the same power supply voltage a 7-stage CMOS ring oscillator-based sensor which gives the digital output, is showing a sensitivity of 44.01 kHz °C and a power consumption of 2.14 m W. These readout circuits find potential applications in implementing on-chip temperature sensing systems. © 2024 IEEE.

To optimize the utilization of a T-type bridge structure in resonant converters, one must thoroughly examine the soft-switching criteria specific to the T-type configuration. This work proposes an energy-based method to determine the softs-witching requirements of a T-type bridge during its various switching transitions. The study estimates the minimum required zero voltage switching (ZVS) current while considering the nonlinearity and voltage dependence associated with the output capacitance of MOSFETs. Moreover, this paper demonstrates that existing studies on ZVS analysis for T-type bridge-based resonant dc-dc converters, which rely only on capacitive energy considerations, significantly underestimate the necessary ZVS current values, with errors as high as 50%. Simulation and hardware results on a T-type primary bridge circuit validate the accuracy of the proposed minimum ZVS current calculation. Hardware tests are conducted on a T-type bridge in a 20 kW electric vehicle charger. © 2024 IEEE.

In this paper we use the difference of pre-fault and during fault phasor voltages expressed as symmetrical voltages to classify and locate fault in a power distribution network with distributed energy resources. We propose a ID deep learning model comprising residual learning blocks for classifying faults and locating the faulted zone and faulted line. In the proposed model, locating the fault does not rely on first identifying the fault type. We have implemented the model on a modified, IEEE-34 node test feeder to assess the effectiveness of the proposed methodology. We have achieved more than 99% accuracy for fault type classification and faulted zone identification. We have also obtained more than 96% accuracy in identifying the faulted line in the test feeder. © 2024 IEEE.
