A novel facial emotion recognition model using segmentation VGG-19 architecture

Facial Emotion Recognition (FER) has gained popularity in recent years due to its many applications, including biometrics, detection of mental illness, understanding of human behavior, and psychological profiling. However, developing an accurate and robust FER pipeline is still challenging because multiple factors make it difficult to generalize across different emotions. The factors that challenge a promising FER pipeline include pose variation, heterogeneity of the facial structure, illumination, occlusion, low resolution, and aging factors. Many approaches were developed to overcome the above problems, such as the Histogram of Oriented Gradients (HOG) and Local Binary Pattern (LBP) histogram. However, these methods require manual feature selection. Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) overcame this manual feature selection problem. CNN has shown great potential in FER tasks due to its unique feature extraction strategy compared to regular FER models. In this paper, we propose a novel CNN architecture by interfacing U-Net segmentation layers in-between Visual Geometry Group (VGG) layers to allow the network to emphasize more critical features from the feature map, which also controls the flow of redundant information through the VGG layers. Our model achieves state-of-the-art (SOTA) single network accuracy compared with other well-known FER models on the FER-2013 dataset. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Bharati Vidyapeeth's Institute of computer Applications and Management.

Heart diseases comprise a extensive Various heart conditions and are commonly referred to as cardio vascular diseases. These encompass issues with the rhythm of the heart, blood vessel diseases, and congenital cardiac defects. It has been the world's biggest cause of death for the last few decades. Finding a reliable and accurate way to automate the process of early disease diagnosis and efficient disease management is urgently needed. Data science facilitates the medical sciences in analysing vast quantities of data. Researchers utilize various Data Mining and Machine Learning methods to evaluate extensive datasets in order to accurately forecast heart illness. This study examines the supervised learning models of Random Forest, K-NN, and SVM to provide a comparative analysis of their efficiency. It is discovered that, when compared to other algorithms, SVM offers the highest accuracy at 0.994. © 2024 IEEE.

A single-mode optical fiber coupler is demonstrated from ZBLAN fiber with a coupling ratio of 61%/39% at a wavelength of 2.7 μm. Single-modedness is evidenced from the absence of modal interference in the transmission spectrum. Coupling to the cross-port is limited by the onset of crystallization during the tapering process, which fosters signal loss through scattering. © 2023 IEEE.

The recent advances in Mobile Robots (MRs) have engendered the need for energy efficient performance. To achieve the latter, two worthwhile aspects come into play: gait planning and Energy Storage Systems (ESSs). These branch into gait parameter optimization, where the robot's locomotion is rendered more efficient, ESS management, where the power providing unit is studied, and charge scheduling, responsible for handling MRs' task allocation. Optimal and energy efficient gait synthesis was achieved through multi-objective optimization algorithms, while the robot's ESS performance and charging schedules were studied by applying effective modeling techniques and algorithms. This paper offers an overview of recent works in the mentioned topics and aims to facilitate future possible research. © 2023 IEEE.

Accurate road extraction from remote sensing images is a critical step for many applications, including navigation, environmental monitoring, and disaster response. In remote sensing images, roads appear as thin curvilinear structures and are very prone to fragmentation due to challenges such as low-contrast materials and occlusions by surrounding vegetation or buildings. Although deep learning has greatly advanced image segmentation techniques, pixel-level loss functions are insufficient for preserving connectivity and topology of thin curvilinear structures such as roads. Small pixel-level errors can disrupt the extraction of accurate road graphs, complicating subsequent characterizations and analysis tasks. In this paper, we propose a novel, adaptive, structure-aware, connectivity-preserving loss function SAC-Loss. This loss function combines global and local processing to improve structure awareness and uses a proximity-based weighting scheme with asymmetric penalties to fill gaps in the road structures while limiting spurious detections elsewhere. Experimental results demonstrate improved road segmentation in terms of visual quality and quantitative performance. © 2025 IEEE.

In this paper, we analyze the indirect source coding problem with side information at both the encoder and decoder, as well as only at the decoder. We first derive structural properties of the two rate distortion functions (RDFs) for general abstract spaces and identify conditions under which the RDFs coincide. For multivariate jointly Gaussian random variables with square-error fidelity, we establish structural properties of the optimal test channels, show that side information at both the encoder and decoder does not reduce compression, and provide water-filling solutions using parallel Gaussian channel realizations. This paper uses a novel realization theory approach to establish achievability of the converse coding theorem lower bounds of the two RDFs. © 2024 IEEE.

With the rapid evolution of computer systems and technologies, individuals face an increasing threat of cybercrime. This research explores the changing landscape of cybercrime by focusing on three key areas: malware analysis, phishing attack analysis, and sentiment analysis. The study aims to identify malware strategies for evading detection and analyze the prevalence of spyware by examining diverse malware samples. Additionally, trend analysis highlights the rising complexity and frequency of phishing attacks, with a notable shift toward targeting reputable platforms. Sentiment analysis of media headlines surrounding data breaches uncovers a paradox: while concerns about cybersecurity remain, there is a growing confidence in the ability to manage cybersecurity crises. These findings provide insights into emerging threats and evolving public perceptions, offering a comprehensive understanding of the current cyber- crime landscape. © 2025 IEEE.

This paper proposes the robust multivariable controller for the single-stage grid connected photovoltaic (PV) energy systems. The PV generator is interfaced to the grid through the three-phase LCL filtered voltage sourced converter (VSC). The proposed controller is designed to optimally control the active and reactive power injected to the grid notwithstanding the PV generator and grid system dynamics. Specifically, the proposed multivariable control scheme is designed to trade-off between control input effort and converter/grid states regulation by merely deciding appropriate quadratic performance indices. Similarly, the servomechanism approach is introduced at the outer-loop to track the DC-link dynamics interacting with the PV generator maximum power point tracker dynamics. To enhance the closed-loop system stability and robustness, the optimal state feedback observer based on H-infinity approach is designed to minimize cost and improves system reliability. The resulting augmented observer-based multivariable control scheme features tracking ability (1.25% SSE and 10ms settling time) and robustness against grid and PV dynamics. Unlike the conventional multi-loop vector controllers for the grid-tie LCL-VSC structure, the proposed scheme does not require any special damping compensators, which makes it simple to design and implement. Finally, the comparative results are presented to validate the performance of the proposed scheme. © 2024 IEEE.

This research work presents the design and development of a hybrid electric bicycle with a primary focus on energy conservation. A hybrid electric vehicle combines two or more energy conversion technologies with one or more storage units, aiming to optimize performance and efficiency. The ultimate goal of this research work is to create a personal transportation vehicle that promotes active mobility while addressing the limitations of traditional bicycles, such as limited range and power, without compromising the inherent benefits. This research proposes a hybrid-electric bicycle that enhances practicality by reducing the physical effort required while allowing for higher speeds. The proposed system incorporates a small permanent magnet DC motor mounted on the rear wheel, powered by lead-acid batteries with a voltage exceeding 24 volts. The hybrid electric bicycle can be recharged through three methods: manual pedaling, connection to a 220-volt AC socket, or solar energy. By combining solar energy with the energy generated through pedaling, the bicycle significantly extends the range achievable with electric power, storing the converted energy in the battery for sustained use. © 2024 IEEE.

Representing magnetic saturation in the AC synchronous machine models increases the accuracy of computer studies. Common approaches include considering the saturation along the d-axis only, along the qd axes separately, and along the main flux path. The last approach generally has a better consistency with the experimental results. This paper proposes a new saturable phase-domain (PD) synchronous machine model for the EMTP-type solution utilizing the single-saturation factor to represent the main flux saturation. The proposed PD model incorporates a piecewise-linear function for a numerically-efficient representation of the nonlinear saturation characteristic. computer studies carried out in PSCAD demonstrate the effectiveness and high accuracy of the new proposed PD model with respect to other existing state-of-the-art saturable synchronous machine models. © 2023 IEEE.
