One of the fundamental problems of interest for discrete-time linear systems is whether its input sequence may be recovered given its output sequence, a.k.a. the left inversion problem. Many conditions on the state space geometry, dynamics, and spectral structure of a system have been used to characterize the well-posedness of this problem, without assumptions on the inputs. However, certain structural assumptions, such as input sparsity, have been shown to translate to practical gains in the performance of inversion algorithms, surpassing classical guarantees. Establishing necessary and sufficient conditions for left invertibility of systems with sparse inputs is therefore a crucial step toward understanding the performance limits of system inversion under structured input assumptions. In this work, we provide the first necessary and sufficient characterizations of left invertibility for linear systems with sparse inputs, echoing classic characterizations for standard linear systems. The key insight in deriving these results is in establishing the existence of two novel geometric invariants unique to the sparse-input setting, the weakly unobservable and strongly reachable subspace arrangements. By means of a concrete example, we demonstrate the utility of these characterizations. Non-Terrestrial networks (NTNs) complement their terrestrial counterparts in enabling ubiquitous connectivity globally by serving unserved and/or underserved areas of the world. Supporting enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB) data over NTNs has been extensively studied in the past. However, focus on massive machine type communication (mMTC) over NTNs is currently growing. Evidence for this are the work items included into the 3rd generation partnership project (3GPP) agenda for commissioning standards for Internet-of-Things (IoT) communications over NTNs. Supporting mMTC in non-Terrestrial cellular IoT (C-IoT) networks requires jointly addressing the unique challenges introduced in NTNs and C-IoT communications. In this paper, we tackle one such issue caused due to the extended round-Trip time and increased path loss in NTNs resulting in a degraded network throughput. We propose smarter transport blocks scheduling methods that can increase the efficiency of resource utilization. We conduct end-To-end link-level simulations of C-IoT traffic over NTNs. Our numerical results of throughput show the improvement in performance achieved using our proposed solutions against legacy scheduling methods. © 2020 IEEE.

Citizen science should adhere as much as possible to the ideas of open science. On the topic of data sharing, the FAIR principles could be applied, making data as open as possible and as closed as necessary. However, it is unclear how open participants want to be with health-related data that is collected as part of a citizen science project. The current study is a first investigation of this topic with a multidisciplinary group of stakeholders and experts in a citizen science for health project. In two focus group discussions we discussed the views and desires regarding the sharing of data and the preferences for the levels of openness when sharing. The results of this study provide preliminary preferences regarding openness;people find sharing of data important yet not all are comfortable with making data completely open. Therefore, it was chosen to share metadata of our projects in repositories, and provide the full, anonymized or pseudonimized, dataset upon reasonable request. Traditional load shedding schemes can be inadequate in grids with high renewable penetration, leading to unstable events and unnecessary grid islanding. Although for both manual and automatic operating modes load shedding areas have been predefined by grid operators, they have remained fixed, and may be sub-optimal due to dynamic operating conditions. In this work, a distributed tri-level linear programming model for automatic load shedding to avoid system islanding is presented. Preventing islanding is preferred because it reduces the need for additional load shedding besides the disconnection of transmission lines between islands. This is crucial as maintaining the local generation-demand balance is necessary to preserve frequency stability. Furthermore, uneven distribution of generation resources among islands can lead to increased load shedding, causing economic and reliability challenges. This issue is further compounded in modern power systems heavily dependent on non-dispatchable resources like wind and solar. The upper-level model uses complex power flow measurements to determine the system areas to shed load depending on actual operating conditions using a spectral clustering approach. The mid-level model estimates the area system state, while the lower-level model determines the locations and load values to be shed. The solution is practical and promising for real-world applications.

Most microphones operate by detecting the sound-pressure induced motion of a membrane. In contrast, here we introduce a microphone that operates by monitoring the sound-pressure-induced modulation of the compressibility of air. By driving a graphene membrane at its resonance frequency, the gas, that is trapped in a squeeze-film beneath it, is compressed at high frequency. Since the stiffness of the gas film depend on the air pressure, the resonance frequency of the graphene is modulated by variations in sound pressure. We demonstrate that this squeeze-film microphone principle can be used to detect sound and music by tracking the membrane's resonance frequency using a phase-locked loop (PLL). Since the sound detection principle is different from conventional devices, the squeeze-film microphone potentially offers advantages like increased dynamic range, and a lower susceptibility to pressure-induced failure and vibration-induced noise. Moreover, it might be made much smaller, as demonstrated by the microphone in this work that operates using a circular graphene membrane with an area that is more than a factor 1000 smaller than that of MEMS microphones. Everyday life scenarios where non-expert users (e.g., customers) are confronted with frontline service robots will become more and more likely. In particular, misunderstandings and incidents may occur during these interactions because of wrong expectations of the robot’s capabilities. Current applicable laws are based on technological assumptions from prior decades unsuitable to modern robotics and AI. The new AI Act as a part of the solution to this is still in development. In addition to the pure legal view, a technological viewpoint may be beneficial for establishing a fitting, trustful, and, thus, acceptable technology liability law. This work contributes to this by empirically evaluating the service robot non-expert user’s liability expectations, the use of robots, and well-being. The results in a DIY store environment significantly show that the store deploying the robot should be liable if an incident happens. Further, we examined that even a minor simulated incident affected the participants’ emotions and moods. Consequently, this influences their perception of liability while not mitigating their acceptance of frontline service robots.

A wind turbine in wind energy conversion systems (WECS) captures a portion of the wind energy. It converts it to mechanical energy through a dynamic interaction with the electrical generator, transforming this mechanical energy into electrical energy. Therefore, wind turbine dynamics are crucial when researching and developing the whole WECS. It is highly desirable to study the behavior of wind energy and monitor the impact on power quality and short circuit level. In this study, a wind turbine using a permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) simulation system is designed, simulated, cases study is discussed. The PMSM is torque-controlled using the field orientation method. A three-phase IGBT inverter with closed loop current PI-controllers powers the PMSM. The study and control system are executed on MATLAB SIMULINK.

Rotor balancing is the final step in the rotor manufacturing process and may be necessary during rotor refurbishment. The process can be time consuming and costly, especially for supercritical monolithic rotors, impacting schedule and increasing costs. Modal balancing is a commonly used practice and is effective but requires multiple runs and at least one high-speed run. Deflection shape balancing is introduced as an alternative that may offer a more efficient method of balancing making the process faster with potentially fewer balancing runs. This paper explores the performance of the deflection shape fit balancing technique by utilizing MATLAB code simulations. © 2021, The Society for Experimental Mechanics, Inc.

The utilization of solar photovoltaic systems has seen a marked uptick in recent years. Research efforts have been geared towards improving efficiency and reducing the cost of solar PV plants. In light of concerns over the potential consequences of high penetration of PV systems, governments have been implementing renewable energy programs. This study presents a time-domain model for analyzing harmonic effects in utility-scale PV plants under varying levels of irradiance and temperature conditions.

This paper presents a novel aerial robotics application of instance segmentation-based floating litter collection with a multi-rotor aerial vehicle (MRAV). In the scope of the paper, we present a review of the available datasets for litter detection and segmentation. The reviewed datasets are used to train a Mask-RCNN neural network for instance segmentation. The neural network is off-board deployed on an edge computing device and used for litter position estimation. Based on the estimated litter position, we plan a path based on a quadratic Bezier curve for the litter pickup. We compare different trajectory generation methods for the object pickup. The system is verified in a laboratory environment. Eventually, we present practical considerations and improvements necessary to enable autonomous litter collection with MRAV.
