In this paper, a compressor structure based on complex complementary pass-transistor logic (C/sup 2/PL) is presented. Some types of 3-2 compressors in C/sup 2/PL are achieved and a number of experiments are conducted to optimize their performance. Two typical compressor building blocks, the 4-2 compressor and 7-3 compressor, are built and their digital neural network (DNN) applications are discussed. Compared with the complementary pass-transistor logic (CDL) designs, our simulations show that the C/sup 2/PL compressor has the best performances in power, delay and number of transistors.

A complex neural architecture called the Encephalon is presented as an example of a network that makes extensive use of adaptive resonance theory (ART) networks. The Encephalon is a machine vision system that autonomously learns object classification inference rules, and makes extensive use of the interplay between the bottom-up and top-down flow of information. This paper describes the components of the Encephalon and presents preliminary simulation results.< >

The decision feedback equalizer has the advantage of compensating for channel amplitude distortion without enhancing noise. Conventional decision feedback equalizers require a training sequence to help them adapt to unknown channel characteristics. Training sequences are not always appropriate. In such situations blind equalizers are more suitable. The blind decision feedback equalizer inherits from the conventional the advantage of not enhancing noise, while compensating for severe ISI. It is thus superior over the blind linear equalizer. On the other hand the blind decision feedback equalizer also suffers from error propagation. In this paper we study the transient behavior of the blind DFE. This is done by deriving an upper bound on the probability of error due to residual ISI and show that it vanishes for the noiseless case. We also determine lower and upper bounds on the probability of error for the additive white Gaussian noise case. The upper bound obtained is the same as that of Duttweiler, et al. (1974). Using a different approach from that of Duttweiler, et al., we derive a lower bound. This bound is tighter than tile "no ISI" lower bound.< >

We present novel approaches to electromagnetic design of high-temperature superconducting quarter-wave parallel coupled-line microstrip filters. The dielectric constant of substrate materials used in high-temperature superconductor technology is too large to be accurately treated by traditional microwave circuit design software packages with analytical/empirical models. We employ electromagnetic field simulation and develop a look-up table method and a powerful space mapping optimization technique, which dramatically reduce the CPU time for the design process.< >

In this paper, the problem of implementing the Miller-Davison (1989) self-tuning integral robust servomechanism for the case of constant references and disturbances is considered and examined using an experimental multi-input multi-output apparatus; cases involving both known and unknown estimates of the steady state gain matrix T are considered. In order to improve the speed of response, proportional feedback has been added in both instances, and this has yielded a superior transient response.

He spent the next two years working as a Visiting Professor in Egypt after which he moved to Ottawa Canada in 1982. He assumed teaching and research positions in Carleton and Manitoba Univerities and later moved to Concordia University Montreal Canada in 1983 where he is now a Professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department. He has published numerous papers in IEEE and international journals in the areas of spread spectrum and networking. He is a well-known expert in these areas and serves as a consultant to many companies. His current research interests include wide-band metropolitan networks switching architectures and performance of on-board multibeam satellites acquisitionless CDMA networks code distribution and orthogonalization of CDMA signals responsive congestion control for ATM-based networks ARQ techniques and investigation of the novel SUGAR CDMA systems in fading channels. Dr. Elhakeem is a Senior Member of the Canadian Electrical Engineering Society and Armed Forces Association. He has chaired numerous technical sessions in IEEE Conferences was the Technical Program Chairman for IEEE Montech 1986 Montreal Canada. In this paper, the performance of a new movable boundary accessing (MBA) technique for future integrated services multibeam satellite systems is studied. The multiservice environment considered includes both asynchronous and isochronous traffic consisting of video, voice, file transfer and interactive data. The movable boundary access technique proposed here will maximize the utilization of the up-link frame capacity. It is shown that the potential user population is substantially increased with the use of a moving boundary policy with minimal overhead.

In this paper, we study the performance of a prioritized on-board baseband switch in conjunction with a multibeam satellite handling integrated services. The services considered for the analysis include voice, video, file transfer and interactive data. The prioritized switch uses both input and output buffering, switch speed-up as well as a two-phase head-of-line resolution algorithm, in order to reduce the buffer loss while maintaining acceptable user delays. The minimum required buffer capacity and switch speed-up for each service in a prioritized environment are found under uniform traffic conditions. It is shown that under uniform traffic conditions, only minimal buffering and switch speed-up are needed even for the lowest priority users. The performance dependence on the switch size is also substantially reduced with head of line resolution and buffering even in a prioritized environment.

Using the statistical model proposed by Chen and Pang [4], various statistical characteristics of the motion compensated frame difference (MCFD) images are derived. It is shown that the optimum KLT for the MCFD images is in fact identical to that of the original image sequence in intraframe mode, and that the DCT remains near optimal. The study thus provides insights into the working of the MPEG and H.261 coders, including the justification for using the same DCT for both intra- and interframe modes. Experiments on standard image sequences confirm the accuracy of the statistical model.

PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS OF A GATEWAY CONNECTING THE CEBUS TO THE ISDN

The performance of a geteway which connects the CEBus to the ISDN has been investigated. The gateway handles three priority class messages for either direction. Message and channel throughputs and packet and message delays have been studied in terms of the offered load for intra-network traffic in the CEBus and internetwork traffic from the CEBus to the ISDN through the gateway. It has been found that delay for internetwork traffic for any priority level is much higher than that for intra-network traffic. In light traffic load, the delay for the ISDN to the CEBus direction is lower than that for the opposite direction. This was seen to reverse in heavy loads. In addition, significant decline of throughput was found, under the condition of large propagation delay, for all three priorities of internetwork traffic. Under favorable conditions, i.e., for low or zero propagation delay, packet length in the range of 300 to 500 bits, and light traffic, less than 70% of offered load (including inter-network traffic via the gateway), the CEBus-Gateway-ISDN system performs satisfactorily.
