This paper describes a high-speed D/A conversion system with an embedded 5-bit programmable FIR filtering function suitable for applications in video interfaces. For demonstration purposes a prototype chip has been fabricated in a digital 1.2 μm single-poly CMOS technology for realizing the combined functions of an 8-bit current-steering D/A conversion and a 3-tap color carrier suppression filtering. At a data delay frequency of 18 MHz and 54 MHz conversion rate, the chip consumes 115 mW for a full-scale output current of 13.3 mA and a 5 V supply.

Two different object-oriented modeling approaches, DEVS and EMSY, constitute the background to explore the area of variable structure modeling. The realization of various kinds of structural changes is discussed in both approaches. Against the background of their prime application domain, both approaches deal with the problem of structural change differently. While DEVS implies attention more to the intelligent control of structural change, EMSY emphasizes the autonomous character of the system. Nevertheless, control and autonomy are intertwined in both approaches to handle structural change.< >

We report our recent development of a feature-based general statistical framework for automatic speech recognition. The design of the feature-based atomic units of speech is aimed at a parsimonious scheme to share the inter-word and inter-phone speech data and at a unified way to account for the context-dependent behaviors in speech. We provide detailed descriptions of the design considerations for the recognizer and of key aspects of the design process. This process, which we call lexicon "compilation", consists of three elements: 1) establishing a feature-specification system;2) constructing a probabilistic and fractional temporal overlapping pattern across the features;and 3) mapping from the feature-overlap pattern to a state-transition graph. A standard phonetic classification task from the TIMIT database is used as a testbed to evaluate the performance of the recognizer. The experimental results show error-rate reductions ranging from 15% to 27% compared with a conventional context-independent phonetic classifier. © 1993 3rd European Conference on Speech Communication and Technology, EUROSPEECH 1993. A Built-in Concurrent Self-Test (BICST) technique for testing combinational logic circuits concurrently with their normal operation is proposed. Concept of sharing the test hardware between identical circuits to reduce the overall area overhead is introduced. The method was implemented in the design of an ALU with on-line test capability in CMOS technology. The additional hardware used for a 12-bit ALU was 19% of the total chip area and it did not impose any timing overhead on the operation of the ALU. The overhead decreases with an increase in the size of the ALU. Following the description of the BICST technique, measures for evaluating the performance of the BICST technique are defined. Methods for the computation of the performance measures using analytical and simulation techniques are discussed and results of these methods are reported. Methods for detecting intermittent faults and for computing the transient fault coverage using BICST are also described. The impact of BICST on the system diagnostics and system maintenance is discussed. © 1993, Gordon and Breach Science Publishers S.A.

Over the years, communication speed of networks has increased from a few Kbps to several Mbps, as also has the bandwidth demand. Communication protocols, however, have not improved to that extent. With the advent of Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM), it is now possible to "tune" protocols to current and future demands. Stewart McDowall was born in Dublin epublic of Ireland in 1967. He received the M. Eng. degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the Queen's University of Belfast in 1990. In the same year he was presented with a Distinction Award from the Department of Education of Northern Ireland and he is currently pursuing his Ph.D. in the Microwave Research Group at Q.U.B. His principal research area is the electromagnetic field mapping of microwave systems using concurrient programming. He is an Associate Member of the Institute of Electrical Engineers. Lee Thaim Wee was awarded the degree of B. Eng. in Electronics from the Queen's University of Belfast in July 1991. He is currently serving in the Malaysian Armed Forces. Vincent F. Fusco was educated at the Queen's Univeristy of Belfast where he obtained the degree of Ph.D. in 1982. He has worked as a research engineer on short-range radar and radio telementry systems. Currently he is a reader in Microwave Communications in the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science the Queen's Univeristy of Belfast. His current research interests include non-linear microwave circuit simulation and concurrent programming techniques for electromagnetic field problems with particular emphasis on EMC applications. He has published numerous research papers in these areas. He is the author of the bookMicrowave Circuits Analysis and Computer Aided Design Prentice-Hall 1987. Dr Fusco is a Chartered Electrical Engineer and a Member of the Institute of Electrical Engineers.

A major limitation of the boundary element method (BEM) for the solution of electrical potential problems is the long computational time required. However, a large portion of the calculations involved can be viewed as being parallel in nature and can therefore be computed concurrently. This paper makes an effort to increase the efficiency of the BEM process using transputer-based multiprocessor computing techniques. The algorithms developed may equally well be applied to any multiprocessor system. The application selected to demonstrate the technique is the solution of an electrostatic problem governed by a two-dimensional Laplace equation. A parallel algorithm for problem setup and field extraction using BEM is designed and implemented on a transputer array. Special attention is directed to the utilization of the parallel processors to achieve maximum efficiency. The analysis in this work concentrates on the communication strategies for passing data between processors as well as a consideration of the workload attributed to each processor. The parallel algorithms were implemented using 3L Parallel Fortran;however, the choice of topology for the overall BEM implementation was limited by the fact that certain parts of the algorithm could only utilize a pipeline configuration of processors. Comprehensive results for the parallel BEM algorithm are given and they are encouraging, indicating that parallel processing has much to offer when applied to the boundary element method.

The Transient Energy Function (TEF) method has been intensely investigated over the last decade as a reliable and accurate tool for transient stability assessment of multimachine power systems. In this paper we propose the Potential Energy Boundary Surface (PEBS) based method for direct analysis of transient stability. The critical value of transient energy and the Critical Clearing Time (T_CCT) are evaluated without the need for successive calculation and memorization of the system kinetic and potential energy values along the sustained fault trajectory. The method is used for determination of output features in the training phase of the neural‐net based transient security assessment. The proposed approach is tested on the well‐known ten‐generator New England test system demonstrating the validity and accuracy of obtained results. Copyright © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
