This paper presents the summary of the Efficient Face Recognition Competition (EFaR) held at the 2023 International Joint Conference on Biometrics (IJCB 2023). The competition received 17 submissions from 6 different teams. To drive further development of efficient face recognition models, the submitted solutions are ranked based on a weighted score of the achieved verification accuracies on a diverse set of benchmarks, as well as the deployability given by the number of floating-point operations and model size. The evaluation of submissions is extended to bias, cross-quality, and large-scale recognition benchmarks. Overall, the paper gives an overview of the achieved performance values of the submitted solutions as well as a diverse set of baselines. The submitted solutions use small, efficient network architectures to reduce the computational cost, some solutions apply model quantization. An outlook on possible techniques that are underrepresented in current solutions is given as well. © 2023, CC BY-NC-SA.

Nonlinear Bandwidth and Bode Diagrams based on Scaled Relative Graphs

Scaled Relative Graphs (SRGs) provide a novel graphical frequency domain method for the analysis of nonlinear systems. In this paper, we use the restriction of the SRG to particular input spaces to compute frequency-dependent gain bounds for incrementally stable nonlinear systems. This leads to a nonlinear (NL) generalization of the Bode diagram, where the sinusoidal, harmonic, and subharmonic inputs are considered separately. When applied to the analysis of the NL loop transfer and sensitivity, we define a notion of bandwidth for both the open-loop and closed-loop, compatible with the LTI definitions. We illustrate the power of our method on the analysis of a DC motor with a parasitic nonlinearity, verifying our results in simulations. © 2025, CC BY.

High throughput event filtering: The interpolation-based DIF algorithm hardware architecture

In recent years, there has been rapid development in the field of event vision. It manifests itself both on the technical side, as better and better event sensors are available, and on the algorithmic side, as more and more applications of this technology are proposed and scientific papers are published. However, the data stream from these sensors typically contains a significant amount of noise, which varies depending on factors such as the degree of illumination in the observed scene or the temperature of the sensor. We propose a hardware architecture of the Distance-based Interpolation with Frequency Weights(DIF) filter and implement it on an FPGA chip. To evaluate the algorithm and compare it with other solutions, we have prepared a new high-resolution event dataset, which we are also releasing to the community. Our architecture achieved a throughput of 403.39 million events per second (MEPS) for a sensor resolution of 1280 × 720 and 428.45 MEPS for a resolution of 640 × 480. The averagevalues of the Area Under the Receiver Operating Characteristic (AUROC) index ranged from 0.844 to 0.999, depending on the dataset, which is comparable to the state-of-the-art filtering solutions, but with much higher throughput and better operation over a wide range of noise levels.

A joint research project “real-time lightning 3D imaging and forecasting project for sustainable and reliable supply of energy and storm disaster early warning” has been selected for Science and Technology Research Partnership for Sustainable Development (SATREPS) program. Held in the coastal area of the Straits of Malacca in Malaysia, which suffers from serious lightning disasters with more than 200 lightning days per year, this research aims to contribute to disaster prevention by forecasting lightning strikes by constructing the world’s highest lightning observation network. This research project is to conduct the field campaigns associated with artificial rocket-triggered lightning in the coastal area of the Straits of Malacca, where the thunderstorm activity is very high and there are many positive cloud-to-ground flashes that may damage electric, communication and other equipments. Measurements of radio waves in various frequency bands and high-energy radiations, and several Rogowski coils are set up surrounding the strike points. It is planned to realize an electromagnetic field observation network in VHF and LF bands to observe the entire progression of each lightning in detail in a wide area. 3D charge distribution in the thundercloud and the amounts of neutralized charges estimated from the information where the lightning discharge begins, how it progresses, and where it terminates. Then, it is examined by the lightning current waveform measured directly with the high structure and rocket-triggered lightning. By comprehensively grasping the charge behavior in the air related to lightning discharge, it is possible to estimate the charge distribution in the cloud and to predict lightning strike. In addition, promoting the control of electric power equipment using IoT, and the early warning system of severe weather disasters to be implemented in the society. In this paper, we present an architecture for classification of pigmented skin lesions from dermatoscopic images. The architecture is using image preprocessing for natural hair removal and image segmentation for extraction of the skin lesion area followed by computation of statistical values of colors as features. The color-based features were extracted from several well-known and widely used color models. Several classification algorithms were evaluated with the best performing classification algorithm being the AdaBoost with random forest classifier with classification accuracy equal to 73.08% when using RGB-based features only and 74.26% when combining RGB, HSV, and YIQ color model-based features. © 2020, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Efficient Methods for Approximating the Shapley Value for Asset Sharing in Energy Communities

With the emergence of energy communities, where a number of prosumers invest in shared generation and storage, the issue of fair allocation of benefits is increasingly important. The Shapley value has attracted increasing interest for redistribution in energy settings - however, computing it exactly is intractable beyond a few dozen prosumers. In this paper, we first conduct a systematic review of the literature on the use of Shapley value in energy-related applications, as well as efforts to compute or approximate it. Next, we formalise the main methods for approximating the Shapley value in community energy settings, and propose a new one, which we call the stratified expected value approximation. To compare the performance of these methods, we design a novel method for exact Shapley value computation, which can be applied to communities of up to several hundred agents by clustering the prosumers into a smaller number of demand profiles. We perform a large-scale experimental comparison of the proposed methods, for communities of up to 200 prosumers, using large-scale, publicly available data from two large-scale energy trials in the UK (UKERC Energy Data Centre, 2017, UK Power Networks Innovation, 2021). Our analysis shows that, as the number of agents in the community increases, the relative difference to the exact Shapley value converges to under 1% for all the approximation methods considered. In particular, for most experimental scenarios, we show that there is no statistical difference between the newly proposed stratified expected value method and the existing state-of-the-art method that uses adaptive sampling (O’Brien et al., 2015), although the cost of computation for large communities is an order of magnitude lower. © 2022, CC BY.

This paper introduces a novel line-of-sight (LoS) β−γ terahertz (THz) channel model that closely mirrors physical reality by considering radiation trapping. Our channel model provides an exhaustive modeling of the physical phenomena including the amount of re-radiation available at the receiver, parametrized by β, and the balance between scattering and noise contributions, parametrized by γ, respectively. Our findings indicate a nontrivial relationship between average limiting received signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and distance emphasizing the significance of γ in THz system design. We further propose new maximum likelihood (ML) thresholds for pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) and quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) schemes, resulting in analytical symbol error rate (SER) expressions that account for different noise variances across constellation points. The results confirm that the analytical SER closely matches the true simulated SER when using an optimal detector. As expected, under maximum molecular re-radiation, the true SER is shown to be lower than that produced by a suboptimal detector that assumes equal noise variances. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. Inelastic quantum mechanical tunneling of electrons across plasmonic tunnel junctions can lead to surface plasmon polariton(SPP)and photon *** far,the optical properties of such junctions have been controlled by changing the shape,or the type of the material,of the electrodes,primarily with the aim to improve SPP or photon emission *** we show that by tuning the tunneling barrier itself,the efficiency of the inelastic tunneling rates can be improved by a factor of *** exploit the anisotropic nature of hexagonal boron nitride(hBN)as the tunneling barrier material in Au//hBN//graphene tunnel junctions where the Au electrode also serves as a plasmonic strip *** this junction constitutes an optically transparent hBN–graphene heterostructure on a glass substrate,it forms an open plasmonic system where the SPPs are directly coupled to the dedicated strip waveguide and photons outcouple to the far *** experimentally and analytically show that the photon emission rate per tunneling electron is significantly improved(~×3)in Au//hBN//graphene tunnel junction due to the enhancement in the local density of optical states(LDOS)arising from the hBN *** the dedicated strip waveguide,SPP outcoupling efficiency is quantified and is found to be∼80%stronger than the radiative outcoupling in Au//hBN//graphene due to the high LDOS of the SPP decay channel associated with the inelastic *** new insights elucidated here deepen our understanding of plasmonic tunnel junctions beyond the isotropic models with enhanced LDOS.

This paper presents five dynamic temperature-sensitive electrical parameters (TSEPs) for the medium-voltage silicon carbide (SiC) and silicon (Si) devices. The theoretical temperature dependence of these parameters is analyzed. A test platform that enables to implement the temperature relevant dynamic characterization is developed. The tested TSEPs are summarized in terms of their relationship with junction temperature, drain/collector current, DC voltage, and external gate resistance. The comparison between the 3 kV 12 A Si IGBT and 3.3 kV 5 A SiC MOSFET with the identical TO-263 package is conducted. The results verify that the turn-off drain-source voltage switching rate achieves better thermal sensitivity for medium-voltage low-current SiC MOSFETs compared with Si IGBTs. Both the turn-on and turn-off delay time exhibit better thermal linearity for the two devices. The turn-off delay time further achieves five times better thermal sensitivity than the turn-on delay time for investigated medium-voltage SiC MOSFETs. © 2020 IEEE.

Minimal realizations of input-output behaviors by LPV state-space representations with affine dependency

The paper makes the first steps towards a behavioral theory of LPV state-space representations with an affine dependency on scheduling, by characterizing minimality of such state-space representations. It is shown that minimality is equivalent to observability, and that minimal realizations of the same behavior are isomorphic. Finally, we establish a formal relationship between minimality of LPV state-space representations with an affine dependence on scheduling and minimality of LPV state-space representations with a dynamic and meromorphic dependence on scheduling. © 2023, CC BY.
