The soft-aided bit-marking (SABM) algorithm is based on the idea of marking bits as highly reliable bits (HRBs), highly unreliable bits (HUBs), and uncertain bits to improve the performance of hard-decision (HD) decoders. The HRBs and HUBs are used to assist the HD decoders to prevent miscorrections and to decode those originally uncorrectable cases via bit flipping (BF), respectively. In this paper, an improved SABM algorithm (called iSABM) is proposed for staircase codes (SCCs). Similar to the SABM, iSABM marks bits with the help of channel reliabilities, i.e., using the absolute values of the log-likelihood ratios. The improvements offered by iSABM include: (i) HUBs being classified using a reliability threshold, (ii) BF randomly selecting HUBs, and (iii) soft-aided decoding over multiple SCC blocks. The decoding complexity of iSABM is comparable of that of SABM. This is due to the fact that on the one hand no sorting is required (lower complexity) because of the use of a threshold for HUBs, while on the other hand multiple SCC blocks use soft information (higher complexity). Additional gains of up to 0.53 dB with respect to SABM and 0.91 dB with respect to standard SCC decoding at a bit error rate of 10−6 are reported. Furthermore, it is shown that using 1-bit reliability marking, i.e., only having HRBs and HUBs, only causes a gain penalty of up to 0.25 dB with a significantly reduced memory requirement. © 2021, CC BY.

This paper presents the summary of the Efficient Face Recognition Competition (EFaR) held at the 2023 International Joint Conference on Biometrics (IJCB 2023). The competition received 17 submissions from 6 different teams. To drive further development of efficient face recognition models, the submitted solutions are ranked based on a weighted score of the achieved verification accuracies on a diverse set of benchmarks, as well as the deployability given by the number of floating-point operations and model size. The evaluation of submissions is extended to bias, cross-quality, and large-scale recognition benchmarks. Overall, the paper gives an overview of the achieved performance values of the submitted solutions as well as a diverse set of baselines. The submitted solutions use small, efficient network architectures to reduce the computational cost, some solutions apply model quantization. An outlook on possible techniques that are underrepresented in current solutions is given as well.

Coverage Probability of STAR-RIS assisted Massive MIMO systems with Correlation and Phase Errors

In this paper, we investigate a simultaneous transmitting and reflecting reconfigurable intelligent surface (STAR-RIS) assisting a massive multiple-input multiple-output (mMIMO) system. In particular, we derive a closed-form expression for the coverage probability of a STAR-RIS assisted mMIMO system while accounting for correlated fading and phase-shift errors. Notably, the phase configuration takes place at every several coherence intervals by optimizing the coverage probability since the latter depends on statistical channel state information (CSI) in terms of large-scale statistics. As a result, we achieve a reduced complexity and overhead for the optimization of passive beamforming, which are increased in the case of STAR-RIS networks with instantaneous CSI. Numerical results corroborate our analysis, shed light on interesting properties such as the impact of the number of RIS elements and the effect of phase errors, along with affirming the superiority of STAR-RIS against reflective-only RIS. © 2022, CC BY.

Since radio-frequency signals are affected signifi-cantly by multipath fading, the localization accuracy they offer cannot meet the sixth generations (6G) demanding specifications. On the other hand, visible light positioning (VLP) has emerged as a low cost alternative that takes into account the highly deterministic channel characteristics of visible light communications to provide cm-level accuracy provided that the investigated spaces are adequately covered by LEDs. However, imperfect channel state information and modeling can lead to positioning errors. In this paper, localization accuracy is quantified in terms of channel estimation errors via low complexity lateration algorithm. The channel estimation errors can be caused by a variety of issues and the provided analysis is general so that it can be easily applied to a plethora of applications. Finally, Monte Carlo simulations validate the proposed method and offer valuable insights for the design and performance bounds of VLP systems.

There is a great concern nowadays regarding alcohol consumption and drug abuse, especially in young people. Analyzing the social environment where these adolescents are immersed, as well as a series of measures determining the alcohol abuse risk or personal situation and perception using a number of questionnaires like AUDIT, FAS, KIDSCREEN, and others, it is possible to gain insight into the current situation of a given individual regarding his/her consumption behavior. But this analysis, in order to be achieved, requires the use of tools that can ease the process of questionnaire creation, data gathering, curation and representation, and later analysis and visualization to the user. This research presents the design and construction of a web-based platform able to facilitate each of the mentioned processes by integrating the different phases into an intuitive system with a graphical user interface that hides the complexity underlying each of the questionnaires and techniques used and presenting the results in a flexible and visual way, avoiding any manual handling of data during the process. Advantages of this approach are shown and compared to the previous situation where some of the tasks were accomplished by time consuming and error prone manipulations of data. © 2024, CC BY-NC-ND.

During the outbreak of infectious diseases, individual always make some adaptive response to avoid infected the diseases. In this paper, we introduce SIRS model on scale-free networks that take into account behavioral memory and time delay to depict individuals’ adaptive feedback, which is better characterize the actual spread of epidemics. We address uniform persistence and find that the model has the sharp threshold property, that is, for the basic reproduction number less than one, the disease-free equilibrium is globally asymptotically stable, while for the basic reproduction number is above one, the endemic equilibrium is globally stable. We further analyze the effects of two control strategies (the vaccination of susceptible people and treatment of infected people) on epidemic dynamics by optimal control strategy. The existence and uniqueness of the optimal control strategy are obtained. Finally, we perform some stochastic network simulations that yield quantitative agreement with the deterministic mean-field approach. The final results show that the effect of time delay does not change the basic reproduction number, but it plays an important role in the process of disease transmission. The behavioral memory is able to affect the basic reproduction number, and it has important and positive implications for disease transmission and control. The work of this paper can provide a theoretical basis and reference for the prediction and prevention of infectious diseases. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Purpose of Review: This paper compares different double-auction pricing mechanisms in the context of peer-to-peer trading in local electricity markets. Benchmarking against the traditional system marginal price (SMP) approach, we analyze the outcomes of the Vickrey-Clarke-Groves (VCG) and Pay-as-bid (PAB) approaches, which lead to a revenue imbalance in the market. To mitigate this imbalance, we propose a set of mechanisms that impose trading fees or subsidies with different fairness policies and discuss their impact on the behavior of market participants. Recent Findings: Proliferation of small-scale and distributed energy resources in low-voltage distribution systems has spurred the development of platforms for peer-to-peer local electricity trading. While recent studies prove that local electricity trading can be beneficial to both the peers and system, implementation of local energy markets is still in the early stages and there is no consensus on an optimal market design. Summary: This paper provides a detailed description of market properties for a competitive LEM that is cleared using the SMP, VCG, and PAB approaches. We show that the proposed compensation mechanisms effectively enforce predefined fairness policies and derive exact payments for each peer depending on market results and individual peer characteristics. The case study uses real-world data to illustrate that different compensation mechanisms can be used to incentivize desirable peer behavior, e.g., installation of new distributed energy resources, investment in grid supportive generation, or flexible energy usage. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Coarse Grained Reconfigurable Arrays become increasingly popular. Besides research on scheduling algorithms and microarchitecture concepts, the use of heterogeneous structures can be a key approach to exploit their full potential. Unfortunately, a purposeful design space exploration of CGRAs is not trivial, since one needs to know the clock frequency of the resulting hardware implementation. This paper discusses challenges and a statistical approach to maximum clock frequency estimation of heterogeneous CGRAs with an irregular interconnect on FPGAs. The presented approach allows estimation with a maximum error of 8.8 - 17.4% and a mean error of only 1.9 - 4.6%.

Small object detection (SOD) in optical images and videos is a challenging problem that even state-of-the-art generic object detection methods fail to accurately localize and identify such objects. Typically, small objects appear in real-world due to large camera-object distance. Because small objects occupy only a small area in the input image (e.g., less than 10%), the information extracted from such a small area is not always rich enough to support decision making. Multidisciplinary strategies are being developed by researchers working at the interface of deep learning and computer vision to enhance the performance of SOD deep learning based methods. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive review of over 160 research papers published between 2017 and 2022 in order to survey this growing subject. This paper summarizes the existing literature and provide a taxonomy that illustrates the broad picture of current research. We investigate how to improve the performance of small object detection in maritime environments, where increasing performance is critical. By establishing a connection between generic and maritime SOD research, future directions have been identified. In addition, the popular datasets that have been used for SOD for generic and maritime applications are discussed, and also well-known evaluation metrics for the state-of-the-art methods on some of the datasets are provided. © 2022, CC BY-NC-SA.

Optimal sizing and control of a grid-connected battery in a stacked revenue model including an energy community

Recent years have seen rapid increases in intermittent renewable generation, requiring novel battery energy storage systems (BESS) solutions. One recent trend is the emergence of large grid-connected batteries that can be controlled to provide multiple storage and flexibility services, using a stacked revenue model. Another emerging development is renewable energy communities (REC), in which prosumers invest in their own renewable generation capacity, but also require battery storage for flexibility. In this paper, we study settings in which energy communities rent battery capacity from a battery operator through a battery-as-a-service (BaaS) model. We present a methodology for determining the sizing and pricing of battery capacity that can be rented, such that it provides economic benefits to both the community and the battery operator that participates in the energy market. We examine how sizes and prices vary across a number of different scenarios for different types of tariffs (flat, dynamic) and competing energy market uses. Second, we conduct a systematic study of linear optimization models for battery control when deployed to provide flexibility to energy communities. We show that existing approaches for battery control with daily time windows have a number of important limitations in practical deployments, and we propose a number of regularization functions in the optimization to address them. Finally, we investigate the proposed method using real generation, demand, tariffs, and battery data, based on a practical case study from a large smart battery operator in the Netherlands. For the settings used in our case study, we find that a community of 200 houses equipped with a 330 kW wind turbine can save up to €12,874 per year by renting just 280 kWh of battery capacity (after subtracting the battery rental costs), and the methodology is applicable for a wide variety of other settings and tariff types.
