A dielectric zirconia metasurface for resonant polarization conversion at microwave frequencies is theoretically and experimentally investigated. The metasurface is composed of a periodic array of square slotted rings interrupted by solid bridge sectors that provide interconnection and mechanical stability to the free-standing metasurface structure. Moreover, they selectively break the symmetry of the unit cell, thus allowing for polarization conversion based on both weakly and strongly resonant modes, the latter stemming from bound states in the continuum. The main findings of the theoretical analysis are corroborated through the experimental characterization of a metasurface sample fabricated by a recently introduced three-dimensional (3D) printing technique based on fused filament fabrication. Going beyond the target application of resonant polarization conversion, this work proposes an approach for the realization of high-permittivity, 3D-printed zirconia metasurfaces with submillimeter features for strong wave-matter interaction at microwave frequencies.

This paper proposes three fractional discrete chaotic systems based on the Rulkov,Chang,and Zeraoulia–Sprott rational *** dynamics of the proposed maps are investigated by means of phase plots and bifurcations *** stabilization schemes are proposed for each of the three maps and the convergence of the states is established by using the Lyapunov ***,a combination synchronization scheme is proposed whereby a combination of the fractional Rulkov and Chang maps is synchronized to the fractional Zeraoulia-Sprott *** results are used to confirm the findings of the paper.

In the above article [1] , we have mentioned that our work demonstrates the highest net rate (360 Gbps) achieved on the TFLN platform using pulse amplitude modulation (PAM). However, in [2] , the authors demonstrated a higher net bit rate of 494.5 Gbps with digital-band-interleaved (DBI) digital-to-analog converter (DAC) and a thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN) Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM) using probabilistically shaped (PS) PAM-16 signaling. Therefore, the claim in the abstract and conclusion of our paper is not correct. While this information was incorrect, it does not influence the contents presented in our paper.

The direct calculation of the absorption coefficient spectra of various tissues from spectral measurements allowed to retrieve the contents of melanin and lipofuscin. In the rabbit brain cortex, 1.8 times higher melanin content is explained by the neuron degeneration process. Similar melanin and lipofuscin contents were found in the rabbit pancreas as a result of the tissue aging process. The conversion of 83 % of the melanin in the human normal kidney into lipofuscin in the cancer kidney indicates that lipofuscin can be considered a kidney cancer marker in humans. © 2022 IEEE.

Neuron signal propagation analysis of cytokine-storm induced demyelination

The COVID-19 pandemic has shaken the world unprecedentedly, where it has affected the vast global population both socially and economically. The pandemic has also opened our eyes to the many threats that novel virus infections can pose for humanity. While numerous unknowns are being investigated in terms of the distributed damage that the virus can do to the human body, recent studies have also shown that the infection can lead to lifelong sequelae that could affect other parts of the body, and one example is the brain. As part of this work, we investigate how viral infection can affect the brain by modelling and simulating a neuron’s behaviour under demyelination that is affected by the cytokine storm. We quantify the effects of cytokine-induced demyelination on the propagation of action potential signals within a neuron. We used information and communication theory analysis on the signal propagated through the axonal pathway under different intensity levels of demyelination to analyse these effects. Our simulations demonstrate that virus-induced degeneration can play a role in the signal power and spiking rate and the probability of releasing neurotransmitters and compromising the propagation and processing of information between the neurons. We also propose a transfer function that models these attenuation effects that degenerates the action potential, where this model has the potential to be used as a framework for the analysis of virus-induced neurodegeneration that can pave the way to improved understanding of virus-induced demyelination. Dubbed "the successor to the mobile Internet", the concept of the Metaverse has grown in popularity. While there exist lite versions of the Metaverse today, they are still far from realizing the full vision of an immersive, embodied, and interoperable Metaverse. Without addressing the issues of implementation from the communication and networking, as well as computation perspectives, the Metaverse is difficult to succeed the Internet, especially in terms of its accessibility to billions of users today. In this survey, we focus on the edge-enabled Metaverse to realize its ultimate vision. We first provide readers with a succinct tutorial of the Metaverse, an introduction to the architecture, as well as current developments. To enable ubiquitous, seamless, and embodied access to the Metaverse, we discuss the communication and networking challenges and survey cutting-edge solutions and concepts that leverage next-generation communication systems for users to immerse as and interact with embodied avatars in the Metaverse. Moreover, given the high computation costs required, e.g., to render 3D virtual worlds and run data-hungry artificial intelligence-driven avatars, we discuss the computation challenges and cloud-edge-end computation framework-driven solutions to realize the Metaverse on resource-constrained edge devices. Next, we explore how blockchain technologies can aid in the interoperable development of the Metaverse, not just in terms of empowering the economic circulation of virtual user-generated content but also to manage physical edge resources in a decentralized, transparent, and immutable manner. Finally, we discuss the future research directions towards realizing the true vision of the edge-enabled Metaverse. © 2022, CC BY.

Locked entropy in partially coherent optical fields

We introduce a taxonomy for partially coherent optical fields spanning multiple degrees of freedom (DoFs) based on the rank of the associated coherence matrix (the number of non-zero eigenvalues). When DoFs comprise two spatial modes and polarization, a fourfold classification emerges, with rank-1 fields corresponding to fully coherent fields. We demonstrate theoretically and confirm experimentally that these classes have heretofore unrecognized different properties. Specifically, whereas rank-2 fields can always be rendered separable with respect to its DoFs via a unitary transformation, rank-3 fields are always non-separable. Consequently, the entropy for a rank-2 field can always be concentrated into a single DoF (thus ridding the other DoF of statistical fluctuations), whereas some entropy is always 'locked' in one DoF of a rank-3 field. © 2023, CC BY.

Recognition of food-texture attributes using an in-ear microphone

Food texture is a complex property;various sensory attributes such as perceived crispiness and wetness have been identified as ways to quantify it. Objective and automatic recognition of these attributes has applications in multiple fields, including health sciences and food engineering. In this work we use an in-ear microphone, commonly used for chewing detection, and propose algorithms for recognizing three food-texture attributes, specifically crispiness, wetness (moisture), and chewiness. We use binary SVMs, one for each attribute, and propose two algorithms: one that recognizes each texture attribute at the chew level and one at the chewing-bout level. We evaluate the proposed algorithms using leave-one-subject-out cross-validation on a dataset with 9 subjects. We also evaluate them using leave-one-food-type-out cross-validation, in order to examine the generalization of our approach to new, unknown food types. Our approach performs very well in recognizing crispiness (0.95 weighted accuracy on new subjects and 0.93 on new food types) and demonstrates promising results for objective and automatic recognition of wetness and chewiness. Intelligent surface optimization in Terahertz under two manifestations of molecular re-radiation

The operation of Terahertz (THz) communication can be significantly impacted by the interaction between the transmitted wave and the molecules in the atmosphere. In particular, it has been observed experimentally that the signal undergoes not only molecular absorption, but also molecular re-radiation. Two extreme modeling assumptions are prevalent in the literature, where the re-radiated energy is modeled in the first as additive Gaussian noise and in the second as a scattered component strongly correlated to the actual signal. Since the exact characterization is still an open problem, we provide in this paper the first comparative study of the performance of a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) assisted THz system under these two extreme models of re-radiation. In particular, we employ an RIS to overcome the large pathloss by creating a virtual line-of-sight (LOS) path. We then develop an optimization framework for this setup and utilize the block-coordinate descent (BCD) method to iteratively optimize both RIS configuration vector and receive beamforming weight resulting in significant throughput gains for the user of interest compared to random RIS configurations. Our results reveal that a slightly better throughput is achieved under the scattering assumption for the molecular re-radiation than the noise assumption. Copyright © 2021, The Authors. Fast Hildreth-based Model Predictive Control of Roll Angle for a Fixed-Wing UAV

In this paper we consider model predictive control (MPC) design for roll angle control for a fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) with multiple segmented control surfaces. The challenge of roll angle control for a fixed-wing UAV consists of switching between inner and outer aileron pairs with hard constraints due to safety, energy saving and switching actuators. The novelty consists of formulating a hybrid control problem as a switched linear constrained MPC-QP problem and switched state observer design for fixed-wing UAV. A fast novel QP-solver based on the active-set QP-solver Hildreth is developed to meet the real-time implementation sampling time of T s = 10 ms. The designed MPC controllers are simulated using Matlab. Simulations and the CPU-time from the improved QP-solvers show MPC to be a very good solution for real-time roll angle control of fixed-wing UAVs.
