To achieve the full multiplexing gain of MIMO interference networks at high SNRs, the interference from different transmitters must be aligned in lower-dimensional subspaces at the receivers. Recently a distributed ¿max-SINR¿ algorithm for precoder optimization has been proposed that achieves interference alignment for sufficiently high SNRs. We show that this algorithm can be interpreted as a variation of an algorithm that minimizes the sum Mean Squared Error (MSE). To maximize sum utility, where the utility depends on rate or SINR, a weighted sum MSE objective is used to compute the beams, where the weights are updated according to the sum utility objective. We specify a class of utility functions for which convergence of the sum utility to a local optimum is guaranteed with asynchronous updates of beams, receiver filters, and utility weights. Numerical results are presented, which show that this method achieves interference alignment at high SNRs, and can achieve different points on the boundary of the achievable rate region by adjusting the MSE weights.

With our society more information-driven, we have begun to distribute data in wide-area storage systems. At the same time, both physical failure and logic error have made it difficult to bring the necessary recovery to bear on remote data disaster, and understanding this proceeding. We describe ARRAY, a system architecture for data disaster recovery that combines reliability, storage space, and security to improve performance for data recovery applications. The paper presents an exhaustive analysis of the design space of ARRAY systems, focusing on the trade-offs between reliability, storage space, security, and performance that ARRAY must make. We present RSRAII (Replication-based Snapshot Redundant Array of Independent Imagefiles) which is a configurable RAID-like data erasure-coding, and also others benefits come from consolidation both erasure-coding and replication strategies. A novel algorithm is proposed to improve snapshot performance referred to as SMPDP (Snapshot based on Multi-Parallel Degree Pipeline).

Depending on the angle of arrivals (AOAs) and other channel characteristics, different types of correlation appear among acoustic pressure and acoustic particle velocity channels. To have accurate channel models for communication system design, a complete set of correlations are derived in this paper for a vector sensor array. In addition to exact results, accurate yet less complex approximations are derived as well. Based on the exact correlations, delay spread of pressure and particle velocity channels are calculated as well.

In this paper, two approaches to utilizing contextual information in semantic image analysis are presented and comparatively evaluated. Both approaches make use of spatial context in the form of fuzzy directional relations. The first one is based on a Genetic Algorithm (GA), which is employed in order to decide upon the optimal semantic image interpretation by treating semantic image analysis as a global optimization problem. On the other hand, the second method follows a Binary Integer Programming (BIP) technique for estimating the optimal solution. Both spatial context techniques are evaluated with several different combinations of classifiers and low-level features, in order to demonstrate the improvements attained using spatial context in a number of different image analysis schemes.

The paper presents an implementation of the current state-of-the-art, with respect to acquisition, analysis and distribution of real-time remotely sensed data from multiple polar orbiting and geostationary earth observing satellite sensors, deploying high performance computing for time-critical disaster mitigation applications. We consider multicast communications from a single source to multiple destinations over a network of erasure channels. Linear network coding maximizes the achievable (min-cut) rate, and a distributed code assignment can be realized by choosing codes randomly at the intermediate nodes. It is typically assumed that the coding information (combining coefficients) at each node is included in the packet overhead, and forwarded to the destination. Instead, we assume that the network coding matrix is communicated to the destinations by appending training bits to the data bits at the source. End-to-end channel coding can then be applied to the training and data either separately, or jointly, by coding across both training and information bits. Ideally, the training overhead should balance the reliability of communicating the network matrix with the reliability of data detection. We maximize data throughput as a function of the training overhead, and show how it depends on the network size, erasure probability, number of independent messages, and field size. The combination network is used to illustrate our results, and shows under what conditions throughput is limited by training overhead. ©2008 IEEE.

In this paper, we propose a generic point cloud encoder that provides a unified framework for compressing different attributes of point samples corresponding to 3D objects with an arbitrary topology. In the proposed scheme, the coding process is led by an iterative octree cell subdivision of the object space. At each level of subdivision, the positions of point samples are approximated by the geometry centers of all tree-front cells, whereas normals and colors are approximated by their statistical average within each of the tree-front cells. With this framework, we employ attribute-dependent encoding techniques to exploit the different characteristics of various attributes. All of these have led to a significant improvement in the rate-distortion (R-D) performance and a computational advantage over the state of the art. Furthermore, given sufficient levels of octree expansion, normal space partitioning, and resolution of color quantization, the proposed point cloud encoder can be potentially used for lossless coding of 3D point clouds. © 2008 IEEE.

Object-based storage is emerging as a next generation of distributed storage technology. Aiming at improving the performance and load-balancing of large-scale object-based storage system, we present a dynamic weight-based cooperative caching scheme referred to as DWC 2 , which allows an object-based storage device (OSD) to use the available free cache of the neighbouring OSD. Our proposed DWC 2 replaces objects based on their weights which is a function of object size, popularity and replica number, and dynamically partitions the memory of OSD into local cache and remote cache according to activity workload. An object data is cached in local cache or remote cache of the cooperative OSDs, thus increasing cache hit ratio, reducing expensive disk access time as well as improving load balance. We benchmarked our proposed DWC 2 with existing cooperative caching schemes under various OSD environments. Our rigorous experiment results conclusively demonstrate that our DWC 2 is scalable and can achieve a significant cache hit ratio, average response time, and load balancing for large-scale OSD cluster.

In this paper, light scattering by a chain of nanoparticles of different shapes including spheres and ellipsoids is investigated. Characterized by surface plasmon resonances of metallic nanoparticles, these structures could behave like nanoantenna and they have potential practical applications in the microscopy, spectroscopy, and optoelectronic devices. As a result, they have drawn increasing interests in theoretical studies and experimental characterisations of the near-field properties of nanoparticles in the optical range. Based on the discussions on dielectric constant and the simulations of fields around spherical and ellipsoidal scatterers using plane wave excitation, various characteristics of the magnitudes of the scatter filed, the light intensities, power densities and energy densities are studied in the near-field region. Figures are proposed as an intuitive interpretation for better understanding in a microscopic view. The results are expected to be useful for studies on the local field enhancement properties of nanoantennas working in the optical region as well as the fundamentals of electromagnetic inverse problem.
