An in-situ silhouette camera system that permits assessment of vertical and horizontal zooplankton distributions on meter scales, yet retains considerable taxonomic information, is described. Representative data are presented from initial deployments in the Gulf Stream off Miami, Florida. Advantages and disadvantages of this approach are discussed.

This paper describes the application of linear quadratic (LQ) optimal control theory to the design of electronic automotive engine controls. The resulting structure of the control is different from conventional controls in that the accelerator pedal is connected to the microcomputer control rather than directly to the fuel metering device. This strategy is analogous to the "fly by wire" aircraft concept. Simulation results indicate that this approach has better engine torque and speed responses to driver commands. This suggests the possibility of improved vehicular driveability. A LQ tracking controller was designed using constant coefficient state variable models (17 states) obtained by linearizing about nominal operating points. Time delays were modelled by first order Pade approximations. Carburetor throttle blade position, spark advance, exhaust gas recirculation, and fuel flow were defined as controls and output variables include speed, torque, manifold vacuum, fuel and air flows, and exhaust emissions (carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, and oxides of nitrogen). It is assumed that both engine torque and exhaust emissions are similarly affected by actuator, intake, and combustion dynamics thereby allowing the experimental models to be derived from torque response data. Parameter values for the models are derived from measured static data and perturbation frequency response tests about the nominal operating conditions. Simulations show that the optimal design has superior driver command step response performance. Whereas the conventionally controlled lean calibrated engine has a torque sag (suggestive of poor driveability) the optimal design yields a smooth torque increase with no torque undershoot. This is explained physically by the fact that the LQ controller slows down the air control loop (throttle) to match the slower fuel control loop dynamics thereby avoiding the lean air-fuel ratio transients which are the main cause of the torque sag. The use of homomorphic systems to deconvolve seismic reflection and teleseismic data has been proposed and explored by a number of researchers with varying success. A careful study of the methods employed reveals a number of problems involving both the class of characteristic systems used and their numerical implementation. Furthermore, the analysis strategies used introduce deterministic constraints on the estimation of the seismic wavelet which may lead to serious problems in determining the earth impulse response. Several novel results are presented in this paper. A class of homomorphic systems matched to the bandpass nature of seismic signals is discussed and improved and more reliable implementation algorithms are developed. The concept of short-time wavelet estimation by homomorphic filtering is introduced. This technique takes into account the specific time-varying characteristics of seismic traces. Strategies for homomorphic wavelet estimation are proposed and illustrated. The recovery of the earth impulse response may then be accomplished by combining homomorphic wavelet estimation with parametric inverse filtering.

This IMA Volume in Mathematics and its Applications SEMICONDUCTORS, PART II is based on the proceedings of the IMA summer program "Semiconductors." Our goal was to foster interaction in this interdisciplinary field which involves electrical engineers, computer scientists, semiconductor physicists and mathematicians, from both university and industry. In particular, the program was meant to encourage the participation of numerical and mathematical analysts with backgrounds in ordinary and partial differential equations, to help get them involved in the mathematical as pects of semiconductor models and circuits. We are grateful to W.M. Semiconductor and integrated-circuit modeling are an important part of the high-technology "chip" industry, whose high-performance, low-cost microprocessors and high-density memory designs form the basis for supercomputers, engineering workstations, laptop computers, and other modern information appliances. There are a variety of differential equation problems that must be solved to facilitate such modeling. This two-volume set covers three topic areas: process modeling and circuit simulation in;and device modeling in;. Process modeling provides the geometry and impurity doping characteristics that are prerequisites for device modeling; device modeling, in turn, provides static current and transient charge characteristics needed to specify the so-called compact models employed by circuit simulators. The goal of these books is to bring together scientists and mathematicians to discuss open problems, algorithms to solve such, and to form bridges between the diverse disciplines involved.

An approach to some nonlinear filtering problems through a generalized notion of superposition has proven useful. In this paper this approach is investigated for the nonlinear filtering of signals which can be expressed as products or as convolutions of components. The applications of this approach in audio dynamic range compression and expansion, image enhancement with applications to bandwidth reduction, echo removal, and speech waveform processing are presented.

A method observing both radial and axial vibrations of time domain and frequency spectrum was studied to investigate the axial load effect of a flat-type brushless dc fan motor operating with and without the rated axial thrust force. When the developed small motor does not exhibit an intrinsically excited unbalanced magnetic force (UMF), the axial force leads to a minor contribution to the growth of the axial vibration. However, when the UMF is intrinsically excited, the preload can enormously decrease the undesired axial vibration. The ratio of the axial vibration of the prototype with the asymmetric magnetic sheet to the one without the sheet is experimentally observed around 55 percent. It demonstrates that axial load plays an effective and crucial factor in controlling the axial vibration of the mobile fan motor. © 2006 IEEE.
