On Improved Commutation for Moving-Magnet Planar Actuators

The demand for high-precision and high-throughput motion control systems has increased significantly in recent years. The use of moving-magnet planar actuators (MMPAs) is gaining popularity due to their advantageous characteristics, such as complete environmental decoupling and reduction of stage mass. Nonetheless, model-based commutation techniques for MMPAs are compromised by misalignment between the mover and coil array and mismatch between the ideal electromagnetic model and the physical system, often leading to decreased system performance. To address this issue, a novel improved commutation approach is proposed in this paper, which is applicable for general planar motor applications, by means of dynamic regulation of the position dependence of the ideal model-based commutation algorithm, which allows for attenuation of magnetic misalignment, manufacturing inaccuracies and other unmodelled phenomena. Growing demands in today’s industry results in increasingly stringent performance and throughput specifications. For accurate positioning of high-precision motion systems, feedforward control plays a crucial role. Nonetheless, conventional model-based feedforward approaches are no longer sufficient to satisfy the challenging performance requirements. An attractive method for systems with repetitive motion tasks is iterative learning control (ILC) due to its superior performance. However, for systems with non-repetitive motion tasks, ILC is generally not applicable, despite of some recent promising advances. In this paper, we aim to explore the use of deep learning to address the task flexibility constraint of ILC. For this purpose, a novel Task Analogy based Imitation Learning (TAIL)-ILC approach is developed. To benchmark the performance of the proposed approach, a simulation study is presented which compares the TAIL-ILC to classical model-based feedforward strategies and existing learning-based approaches, such as neural network based feedforward learning.

Meta-State-Space Learning: An Identification Approach for Stochastic Dynamical systems

Available methods for identification of stochastic dynamical systems from input-output data generally impose restricting structural assumptions on either the noise structure in the data-generating system or the possible state probability distributions. In this paper, we introduce a novel identification method of such systems, which results in a dynamical model that is able to produce the time-varying output distribution accurately without taking restrictive assumptions on the data-generating process. The method is formulated by first deriving a novel and exact representation of a wide class of nonlinear stochastic systems in a so-called meta-state-space form, where the meta-state can be interpreted as a parameter vector of a state probability function space parameterization. As the resulting representation of the meta-state dynamics is deterministic, we can capture the stochastic system based on a deterministic model, which is highly attractive for identification. The meta-state-space representation often involves unknown and heavily nonlinear functions, hence, we propose an artificial neural network (ANN)-based identification method capable of efficiently learning nonlinear meta-state-space models. We demonstrate that the proposed identification method can obtain models with a log-likelihood close to the theoretical limit even for highly nonlinear, highly stochastic systems. © 2023, CC BY.

Utilizing periodic phase modulation (PPM) can shift the echo spectrum, affecting matched filtering (MF) processing, leading to time delay shift or amplitude attenuation. The prior works on the impact of PPM on MF mainly consider an ideal phase modulation model, where the phase shift is considered to be sufficient. In practical applications, the phase shift capability achieved by physical devices for phase modulation is often insufficient due to factors such as hardware limitations, operating bandwidth, and cost constraints. To address this limitation, this paper investigates the quantitative impact of PPM on the MF under conditions of insufficient phase shift. Firstly, reflection coefficient models for PPM under insufficient phase shifts are established, considering 1-bit and 2-bit conditions. Furthermore, for commonly used radar waveforms such as linear frequency modulation (LFM) and phase-coded modulation (PCM), expressions for MF output results under different bit rates are derived, and a quantitative analysis of the time delay and amplitude attenuation compared with the unmodulated case is conducted. Finally, the correctness of the proposed theoretical model is validated through simulation and measured experiments. © 1965-2011 IEEE.

Bipolar medium-voltage dc (MVDC) distribution systems are of great interests nowadays due to its high availability and reliability. A bipolar MVDC grid can be established by the installation of power-balancers or directly by converters with inherent bipolar operation capability to avoid the extra cost and volume. Therefore, this paper proposes a modular multilevel dc-dc converter (MMDC) with inherent bipolar operation capability for the interconnection of bipolar MVDC grids and LVDC girds. Considering that the MMDC is normally only capable of operating with monopole MVDC distribution systems due to the symmetric structure and operation scheme, a center-Tapped high-frequency interface transformer is employed on the MV side of the MMDC. Based on the concept of the flux dc-bias cancellation, a dedicated operation method is proposed, whereby the power flows of the two MVDC poles can be regulated independently with a simple control scheme, and no penalty of increased current rating is imposed on the semiconductor devices or the interface transformer compared to the conventional MMDC with monopole operation. Additionally, the MMDC can realize single-pole operation in case one pole is faulty and deliver at least 50% of the rated power capacity, which significantly enhance the reliability and availability of the power delivery. The validity of the proposed bipolar operation scheme of the MMDC has been verified by both simulations and experiments with a down-scale prototype. © 2017 CPSS.

Microgrids (MGs) have become more unpredictable due to integration of renewable generation sources. Several methods are used to solve load flow problems in MGs. Load flow analysis is a complex problem for islanded MGs due to the absence of slack bus and dependency of active power generation of droop-controlled DGs on frequency. In this paper, a Modified Newton Raphson (MNR) approach is used to perform load flow analysis of isolated MGs considering various types of electric vehicle (EV) loads. The presented method has been validated on 6-bus and 38-bus test systems of the islanded microgrid to give an accurate and simple approach for computing the load flow solutions. © 2024 IEEE.

To take unit commitment (UC) decisions under uncertain net load, most studies utilize a stochastic UC (SUC) model that adopts a one-size-fits-all representation of uncertainty. Disregarding contextual information such as weather forecasts and temporal information, these models are typically plagued by a poor out-of-sample performance. To effectively exploit contextual information, in this paper, we formulate a conditional SUC problem that is solved given a covariate observation. The presented problem relies on the true conditional distribution of net load and so cannot be solved in practice. To approximate its solution, we put forward a predictive prescription framework, which leverages a machine learning model to derive weights that are used in solving a reweighted sample average approximation problem. In contrast with existing predictive prescription frameworks, we manipulate the weights that the learning model delivers based on the specific dataset, present a method to select pertinent covariates, and tune the hyperparameters of the framework based on the out-of-sample cost of its policies. We conduct extensive numerical studies, which lay out the relative merits of the framework vis-à-vis various benchmarks.
