AXI-REALM: A Lightweight and Modular Interconnect Extension for Traffic Regulation and Monitoring of Heterogeneous Real-Time SoCs

The increasing demand for heterogeneous functionality in the automotive industry and the evolution of chip manufacturing processes have led to the transition from federated to integrated critical real-time embedded systems (CRTESs). This leads to higher integration challenges of conventional timing predictability techniques due to access contention on shared resources, which can be resolved by providing system-level observability and controllability in hardware. We focus on the interconnect as a shared resource and propose AXI-REALM, a lightweight, modular, and technology-independent real-time extension to industry-standard AXI4 interconnects, available open-source. AXI-REALM uses a credit-based mechanism to distribute and control the bandwidth in a multi-subordinate system on periodic time windows, proactively prevents denial of service from malicious actors in the system, and tracks each manager’s access and interference statistics for optimal budget and period selection. We provide detailed performance and implementation cost assessment in a 12nm node and an end-to-end functional case study implementing AXI-REALM into an open-source Linux-capable RISC-V SoC. In a system with a general-purpose core and a hardware accelerator’s DMA engine causing interference on the interconnect, AXI-REALM achieves fair bandwidth distribution among managers, allowing the core to recover 68.2 % of its performance compared to the case without contention. Moreover, near-ideal performance (above 95 %) can be achieved by distributing the available bandwidth in favor of the core, improving the worst-case memory access latency from 264 to below eight cycles. This paper considers the distributed robust suboptimal consensus control problem of linear multi-agent systems, with both H2 and H∞ performance requirements. A novel two-step complementary design approach is proposed. In the first step, a distributed control law is designed for the nominal multi-agent system to achieve consensus with a prescribed H2 performance. In the second step, an extra control input, depending on some carefully chosen residual signals indicating the modeling mismatch, is designed to complement the H2 performance by providing robustness guarantee in terms of H∞ requirement with respect to disturbances or uncertainties. The proposed complementary design approach provides an additional degree of freedom for design, having two separate controls to deal with the H2 performance and the robustness of consensus, respectively. Thereby, it does not need to make much trade-off, and can be expected to be much less conservative than the trade-off design such as the mixed H2/H∞ control method. Besides, this complementary approach will recover the achievable H2 performance when external disturbances or uncertainties do not exist. An emerging public health application of connected and automated vehicle (CAV) technologies is to reduce response times of emergency medical service (EMS) by indirectly coordinating traffic. Therefore, in this work we study the CAV-assisted corridor clearance for EMS vehicles from a short term deployment perspective. Existing research on this topic often overlooks the impact of EMS vehicle disruptions on regular traffic, assumes 100% CAV penetration, relies on real-time traffic signal timing data and queue lengths at intersections, and makes various assumptions about traffic settings when deriving optimal model-based CAV control strategies. However, these assumptions pose significant challenges for near-term deployment and limit the real-world applicability of such methods. To overcome these challenges and enhance real-world applicability in near-term, we propose a model-free approach employing deep reinforcement learning (DRL) for designing CAV control strategies, showing its reduced overhead in designing and greater scalability and performance compared to model-based methods. Our qualitative analysis highlights the complexities of designing scalable EMS corridor clearance controllers for diverse traffic settings in which DRL controller provides ease of design compared to the model-based methods. In numerical evaluations, the model-free DRL controller outperforms the model-based counterpart by improving traffic flow and even improving EMS travel times in scenarios when a single CAV is present. Across 19 considered settings, the learned DRL controller excels by 25% in reducing the travel time in six instances, achieving an average improvement of 9%. These findings underscore the potential and promise of model-free DRL strategies in advancing EMS response and traffic flow coordination, with a focus on practical near-term deployment. Within the scope of prostate cancer diagnostic imaging, distinguishing lesions is challenging due to their subtle appearance and the prostate gland’s complexity. This study employed the nnU-Net, a state-of-the-art medical image segmentation model, on a dataset of 301 patients from 2 openly available datasets to identify whether lesion sizes are affecting the model’s performance. By applying t-SNE dimensionality reduction algorithm among dice score and respective lesion sizes, we found that nnU-Net behaves differently for lesions smaller than 9mm compared to lesions larger than 15mm. These insights can inform specialized training approaches for future deep learning models in prostate lesion *** Relevance: The main contributions of this study is, to investigate whether lesion sizes affects nnU-Net’s deficiency leading to the development of more specialized models in respect to these factors.

To facilitate responsive and cost-effective computing resource scheduling and service delivery over edge-assisted mobile networks, this paper investigates a novel two-stage double auction methodology via utilizing an interesting idea of resource overbooking to overcome dynamic and uncertain nature from edge servers (sellers) and demand from mobile devices (as buyers). The proposed auction integrates multiple essential factors such as social welfare maximization and decision-making latency (e.g., the time for determining winning seller-buyer pairs) reduction, by introducing a stagewise strategy: an overbooking-driven pre-double auction (OPDAuction) for determining long-term cooperations between sellers and buyers before practical resource transactions as Stage I, and a real-time backup double auction (RBDAuction) for handling residual resource demands during actual transactions. In particular, by applying a proper overbooking rate, OPDAuction helps with facilitating trading contracts between appropriate sellers and buyers as guidance for future transactions, by allowing the booked resources to exceed supply. Then, since pre-auctions may cause risks, our RBDAuction adjusts to real-time market changes, further enhancing the overall social welfare. More importantly, we offer an interesting view to show that our proposed two-stage auction can support significant design properties such as truthfulness, individual rationality, and budget balance. Through extensive experiments, we demonstrate good performance in social welfare, time efficiency, and computational scalability, outstripping conventional methods in dynamic edge computing settings. Memristor-based crossbar architectures have proven highly effective for matrix vector multiplication (MVM) operations, making them a promising solution for accelerating the MVMs widely used in precoding algorithms for multiple input multiple output (MIMO) wireless communication systems. However, real-world implementation of memristor-based computing systems face challenges due to commonly observed non-idealities in both the devices themselves and the circuits they’re built into. To facilitate a rapid design flow and investigate the impact of non-idealities, an integrated open-source simulation framework MemMIMO is developed. The simulation framework estimates the accuracy and hardware performance of the computing system, offering a variety of flexible design options. MemMIMO integrates a behavioral model of the mix-signal architecture with a digital front-end. There are three major building blocks in MemMIMO: the device fitting block, the mapping block, and the performance estimation block. These blocks work together to map the complex MVMs in precoding algorithms for MIMO systems to crossbar-based architectures that incorporate memristor models characterized by physical device behavior. Using two typical use cases targeting six-generation (6G) massive MIMO communication as case studies, MemMIMO is used to model different memristor devices, explore the impact of non-idealities on system accuracy, and benchmark circuit-level performance metrics including area, speed, and power. © 1982-2012 IEEE.

PROV-IO+: A Cross-Platform Provenance Framework for Scientific Data on HPC systems

Data provenance, or data lineage, describes the life cycle of data. In scientific workflows on HPC systems, scientists often seek diverse provenance (e.g., origins of data products, usage patterns of datasets). Unfortunately, existing provenance solutions cannot address the challenges due to their incompatible provenance models and/or system implementations. In this paper, we analyze four representative scientific workflows in collaboration with the domain scientists to identify concrete provenance needs. Based on the first-hand analysis, we propose a provenance framework called PROV-IO+, which includes an I/O-centric provenance model for describing scientific data and the associated I/O operations and environments precisely. Moreover, we build a prototype of PROV-IO+ to enable end-to-end provenance support on real HPC systems with little manual effort. The PROV-IO+ framework can support both containerized and non-containerized workflows on different HPC platforms with flexibility in selecting various classes of provenance. Our experiments with realistic workflows show that PROV-IO+ can address the provenance needs of the domain scientists effectively with reasonable performance (e.g., less than 3.5% tracking overhead for most experiments). This paper considers distributed online nonconvex optimization with time-varying inequality constraints over a network of agents. For a time-varying graph, we propose a distributed online primal–dual algorithm with compressed communication to efficiently utilize communication resources. We show that the proposed algorithm establishes an O(T max{1−θ1,θ1}) network regret bound and an O(T 1−θ1/2) network cumulative constraint violation bound, where T is the number of iterations and θ1 ∈ (0, 1) is a user-defined trade-off parameter. When Slater’s condition holds (i.e, there is a point that strictly satisfies the inequality constraints at all iterations), the network cumulative constraint violation bound is reduced to O(T 1−θ1). These bounds are comparable to the state-of-the-art results established by existing distributed online algorithms with perfect communication for distributed online convex optimization with (time-varying) inequality constraints.
