There is growing interest in e-mobility which is not only limited to electric vehicles but also mass transit systems, heavy duty vehicles, off-road vehicles and so on. With the intense focus on sustainability and achieving net zero emissions, most transit systems will be electrified. The impact of mass transit electrification on the existing power system needs a thorough and detailed analysis. Also, the upgrade from fuel powered transit systems to electric transit systems needs to be done with minimal changes to the existing power network and maximum utilization of available resources in the transit system. Therefore, the study of electric transit systems, its impact on the power system and challenges that can arise from electrifying railways are presented in this paper.

More and more electric vehicles and charging stations are penetrating into the power system today which introduce new challenges. As a result, the concept of vehicle to vehicle charging (V2V) is gaining interest. Therefore, it is important to understand the concept of V2V charging. In this paper, some of the recent developments in the area of vehicle to vehicle (V2V) charging are explored.

Forests are of great importance to natural ecosystems. In the case of frequent storms, it is of great significance to map the windfall damages of forests and estimate the affected area for post-disaster management. remote sensing image classification has wide applications in forest change monitoring, but it also has some limitations. First, the training samples of the classification algorithm are mostly selected by pixel-based random sampling and artificial region sampling, which lead to the difficulty of modeling complex built-up area patterns in high-resolution images and sample redundancy respectively. Second, when the labeled samples are limited, forcing them into training sets and test sets will result in poor classification accuracy. To solve these problems, two new propositions have been proposed in this paper. The first is a new sample selection method, which combines block-based sampling with spatial features computed by single or multiple windows. Second, a new evaluation criterion is proposed by using a homomorphic hypothesis margin map which can not only assess the confidence level of each pixel category but also make regional boundaries clearer combined with OOB accuracy which can replace the test set so that all samples can be used for change detection and binary map. Then the random forest ensemble learning algorithm is used to classify samples to compare the differences with the traditional method. The experimental results show that under the same conditions, the OOB accuracy obtained by spatial features with whole block sampling is 7.2% higher than that obtained by spectral features with pixel-based sampling and 2% − 3% higher than block center sampling, of which the highest value reaches 98.8%. Besides, it is also proved that distinguishing damaged and undamaged forests accurately only depending on the after-storm image is possible, which will be useful in situations where data is lacking. © 2023, The Authors. Modular Multilevel DC-DC Converter With Inherent Bipolar Operation Capability for Resilient Bipolar MVDC Grids

Bipolar medium-voltage dc (MVDC) distribution systems are of great interests nowadays due to its high availability and reliability. A bipolar MVDC grid can be established by the installation of power-balancers or directly by converters with inherent bipolar operation capability to avoid the extra cost and volume. Therefore, this paper proposes a modular multilevel dc-dc converter (MMDC) with inherent bipolar operation capability for the interconnection of bipolar MVDC grids and LVDC girds. Considering that the MMDC is normally only capable of operating with monopole MVDC distribution systems due to the symmetric structure and operation scheme, a center-tapped high-frequency interface transformer is employed on the MV side of the MMDC. Based on the concept of the flux dc-bias cancellation, a dedicated operation method is proposed, whereby the power flows of the two MVDC poles can be regulated independently with a simple control scheme, and no penalty of increased current rating is imposed on the semiconductor devices or the interface transformer compared to the conventional MMDC with monopole operation. Additionally, the MMDC can realize single-pole operation in case one pole is faulty and deliver at least 50% of the rated power capacity, which significantly enhance the reliability and availability of the power delivery. The validity of the proposed bipolar operation scheme of the MMDC has been verified by both simulations and experiments with a down-scale prototype.

This paper investigates the C-band polarimetric SAR imaging response to ocean current at various wind and current velocities. The well-developed radar imaging model, which incorporates different scattering mechanisms of specular scattering, Bragg scattering and wave breaking effect, is employed for the numerical simulations. The current surface with a typical internal wave phenomenon generated by the MITgcm numerical mode is used. The KHCC03 spectrum is utilized in which the modulations by current and other dynamic factors are considered. The numerical results indicate that hydrodynamic modulation of ocean scattering is nonlinear to both wind and current velocities. For currents with high velocity, the modulation effects decreases with the increase of wind speed. However, this monotonic relationship is not applicable to the modulation effects of weak current, particularly for co-polarizations. At large current velocity, the current modulation effect at co-polarizations could be saturated.

Neural manifolds summarize the intrinsic structure of the information encoded by a population of neurons. Advances in experimental techniques have made simultaneous recordings from multiple brain regions increasingly commonplace, raising the possibility of studying how these manifolds relate across populations. However, when the manifolds are nonlinear and possibly code for multiple unknown variables, it is challenging to extract robust and falsifiable information about their relationships. We introduce a framework, called the method of analogous cycles, for matching topological features of neural manifolds using only observed dissimilarity matrices within and between neural populations. We demonstrate via analysis of simulations and in vivo experimental data that this method can be used to correctly identify multiple shared circular coordinate systems across both stimuli and inferred neural manifolds. Conversely, the method rejects matching features that are not intrinsic to one of the systems. Further, as this method is deterministic and does not rely on dimensionality reduction or optimization methods, it is amenable to direct mathematical investigation and interpretation in terms of the underlying neural activity. We thus propose the method of analogous cycles as a suitable foundation for a theory of cross-population analysis via neural manifolds. © 2025, CC BY-NC-ND.

Visual inspection of dual-energy X-ray radiographic images of cabin baggage requires high performance, but is hindered by various challenges such as low target prevalence, variability in target visibility, possible presence of multiple targets, and security personnel fatigue and inattention. Artificial intelligence (AI) techniques, particularly deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs), have shown promise in improving the automatic detection of explosives, even with low-resolution radiographic images, especially in high baggage throughput scenarios. In this paper, we focus on the detection of detonators as components of improvised explosive devices. The proposed approach involves comparing two experiments implemented in a deep CNN architecture using TensorFlow and Keras libraries. In the first experiment, raw dual-energy radiographic images without any enhancement were used. The second experiment includes three methods for contrast enhancement and feature extraction: the Contrast Limited Adaptive Histogram Equalization (CLAHE) method, the wavelet transform-based method, and the mixed CLAHE RGB-Wavelet method. In the latter two methods, Haar, Db2, Coif2, and Sym2 mother wavelet functions at two levels (HH and HL) were employed. The analysis of results focuses on a comparative study of performance measures such as accuracy, precision, recall, and F1 score. It was found that the preprocessing methods used in experiment 2, for the two evaluated classes (detonator and no detonator), achieved higher accuracy compared to the raw radiographic images used in experiment 1 (98.08%). The highest accuracies in experiment 2, with a value of 100%, were obtained with the CLAHE method (green channel in grayscale, blue channel in grayscale, and RGB channels) and the wavelet transform method with Haar mother wavelet at two levels HL

Secure Communication of Active RIS Assisted NOMA Networks

As a revolutionary technology, reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has been deemed as an indispensable part of the 6th generation communications due to its inherent ability to regulate the wireless channels. However, passive RIS (PRIS) still suffers from some pressing issues, one of which is that the fading of the entire reflection link is proportional to the product of the distances from the base station to the PRIS and from the PRIS to the users, i.e., the productive attenuation. To tackle this problem, active RIS (ARIS) has been proposed to reconfigure the wireless propagation condition and alleviate the productive attenuation. In this paper, we investigate the physical layer security of the ARIS assisted non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) networks with the attendance of external and internal eavesdroppers. To be specific, the closed-form expressions of secrecy outage probability (SOP) and secrecy system throughput are derived by invoking both imperfect successive interference cancellation (ipSIC) and perfect SIC. The secrecy diversity orders of legitimate users are obtained at high signal-to-noise ratios. Numerical results are presented to verify the accuracy of the theoretical expressions and indicate that: i) The SOP of ARIS assisted NOMA networks exceeds that of PRIS-NOMA, ARIS/PRIS-assisted orthogonal multiple access (OMA);ii) Due to the balance between the thermal noise and residual interference, introducing excess reconfigurable elements at ARIS is not helpful to reduce the SOP;and iii) The secrecy throughput performance of ARIS-NOMA networks outperforms that of PRIS-NOMA and ARIS/PRIS-OMA networks. Groundbreaking applications such as ChatGPT have heightened research interest in generative artificial intelligence (GAI). Essentially, GAI excels not only in content generation but also signal processing, offering support for wireless sensing. Hence, we introduce a novel GAI-assisted human flow detection system (G-HFD). Rigorously, G-HFD first uses the channel state information (CSI) to estimate the velocity and acceleration of propagation path length change of the human induced reflection (HIR). Then, given the strong inference ability of the diffusion model, we propose a unified weighted conditional diffusion model (UW-CDM) to denoise the estimation results, enabling detection of the number of targets. Next, we use the CSI obtained by a uniform linear array with wavelength spacing to estimate the HIR’s time of flight and direction of arrival (DoA). In this process, UW-CDM solves the problem of ambiguous DoA spectrum, ensuring accurate DoA estimation. Finally, through clustering, G-HFD determines the number of subflows and the number of targets in each subflow, i.e., the subflow size. The evaluation based on practical downlink communication signals shows G-HFD’s accuracy of subflow size detection can reach 91%. This validates its effectiveness and underscores the significant potential of GAI in the context of wireless sensing. © 2024, CC BY.

This paper considers distributed optimization for minimizing the average of local nonconvex cost functions, by using local information exchange over undirected communication networks. To reduce the required communication capacity, we introduce an encoder–decoder scheme. By integrating it with distributed gradient tracking and proportional integral algorithms, respectively, we then propose two quantized distributed nonconvex optimization algorithms. Assuming the global cost function satisfies the Polyak–Lojasiewicz condition, which does not require the global cost function to be convex and the global minimizer is not necessarily unique, we show that our proposed algorithms linearly converge to a global optimal point. Moreover, we show that a low data rate is sufficient to guarantee linear convergence when the algorithm parameters are properly chosen. The theoretical results are illustrated by numerical examples. © 1963-2012 IEEE.
