Blueshift: Rebalancing engineering engagement, integrity, and learning outcomes across an electronically-enabled remediation hierarchy

With a growing number of enrollments in engineering programs, more time and energy for tutoring and grading exams/quizzes is necessary. The BLUESHIFT framework utilizes a synergistic combination of faculty, Graduate Teaching Assistants, and educational technologies to provide reliable approaches to not only meet the increased time, cost, and energy efficiency needed for increasing numbers of engineering students, but also to focus on improving the quality of education, skills, and employability of our graduates in computing-related fields. An Evaluation and Proficiency Center (EPC) has been piloted at a large state university, where key elements of the BLUESHIFT learning flow have been integrated into selected undergraduate engineering courses. The EPC integrates computer-based evaluation with a close-knit review and learning cycle based on directed and open tutoring. This approach has received overwhelmingly positive responses from students regarding the effectiveness of pedagogical approaches (i.e., Exemplar Vignettes, content tutoring), assessment models (i.e., electronically delivered quizzes, flexible scheduling, use of testing center), and tutoring strategies (i.e., self-paced, exam results review). Survey results have been positive with respect to student perceptions across a variety of perspectives compared to paper-based delivery. In this manuscript, the BLUESHIFT framework and process, as well as results collected from student performance and perceptions of the initial implementation, will be addressed. © 2019 American Society for engineering Education. Understanding the mechanism of photoacoustic generation at the nano-scale is key to developing more efficient photoacoustic devices and agents. Unlike the far-field photoacoustic effect that has been well employed in imaging, the near-field profile leads to a complex wave-tissue interaction but is understudied. Here we show that the spatiotemporal profile of the near-field photoacoustic waves can be shaped by laser pulses, anisotropy, and the spatial arrangement of nanoparticle(s). Using a gold nanorod as an example, we discovered that the near-field photoacoustic amplitude in the short axis is ~75% stronger than the long axis, and the anisotropic spatial distribution converges to an isotropic spherical wave at ~50 nm away from the nanorod’s surface. We further extend the model to asymmetric gold nanostructures by arranging isotropic nanospheres anisotropically with broken symmetry to achieve a precisely controlled near-field photoacoustic "focus" largely within an acoustic wavelength. © 2022, CC BY-NC-SA.

BACKGROUND:The association between human epidermal growth factor receptor-2 (HER2) amplification and brain metastasis (BM) in patients having colorectal cancer (CRC) has been suggested but not yet established. This study investigated the expression patterns of HER2, its association with BM, and its prognostic value in patients having CRC. METHODS:We retrospectively identified 99 patients having metastatic CRC (mCRC) and BM (the BM cohort) and compared them with a cohort of 249 patients having mCRC and without BM (the stage IV cohort) by propensity score matching. Immunohistochemical studies of HER2 on all available paraffin-embedded tumour samples, either from the primary tumour, the metastasis (brain and/or extracranial sites) or both, were performed and analysed. HER2 fluorescent in situ hybridisation was applied when necessary. The expression of HER2 was compared and correlated with survival. RESULTS:HER2 amplifications were detected in 16 (18.4%) of 87 and 9 (3.6%) of 249 patients who had specimens available in the BM and stage IV cohorts, respectively (P < .001). After propensity score matching, HER2 amplification was significantly associated with BM (odds ratio: 5.38, P = .003). HER2 heterogeneity was frequently observed not only at the single tumour level but also in paired tumour samples. A marginally significant longer survival since BM was found in patients having HER2-amplified mCRC than in those without (P = .07). CONCLUSIONS:HER2 amplification was significantly associated with BM in patients having mCRC and might have prognostic value for survival since BM. Given the heterogeneity of HER2 expression, the testing of HER2 status on available tissues from both primary and metastatic tumours should be encouraged.

We investigate, using experiments and numerical simulations, the distortions and the alignment of skyrmions in liquid crystal under external flows for a range of average flow velocities. The simulations are based on the Landau-de Gennes Q tensor theory both for isolated as well as for systems with many skyrmions. We found striking flow driven elongation of an isolated skyrmion and flow alignment of skyrmions in the many-skyrmion system, both of which are also observed in the experiments. In the simulations, particular attention was given to the dissipation rate and to the various dissipation channels for a single skyrmion under external flow. This analysis provides insight on the observed scaling regime of the elongation of isolated flowing skyrmions and revealed a surprising plastic response at very short times, which may be relevant in applications based on the alignment of soft structures such as liquid crystal skyrmions. Integrated Construction of Multimodal Atlases with Structural Connectomes in the Space of Riemannian Metrics

The structural network of the brain, or structural connectome, can be represented by fiber bundles generated by a variety of tractography methods. While such methods give qualitative insights into brain structure, there is controversy over whether they can provide quantitative information, especially at the population level. In order to enable population-level statistical analysis of the structural connectome, we propose representing a connectome as a Riemannian metric, which is a point on an infinite-dimensional manifold. We equip this manifold with the Ebin metric, a natural metric structure for this space, to get a Riemannian manifold along with its associated geometric properties. We then use this Riemannian framework to apply object-oriented statistical analysis to define an atlas as the Fréchet mean of a population of Riemannian metrics. This formulation ties into the existing framework for diffeomorphic construction of image atlases, allowing us to construct a multimodal atlas by simultaneously integrating complementary white matter structure details from DWMRI and cortical details from T1-weighted MRI. We illustrate our framework with 2D data examples of connectome registration and atlas formation. Finally, we build an example 3D multimodal atlas using T1 images and connectomes derived from diffusion tensors estimated from a subset of subjects from the Human Connectome Project. Characterizing the performance of fluorescence microscopy and nonlinear imaging systems is an essential step required for imaging system optimization and quality control during longitudinal experiments. Emerging multimodal nonlinear imaging techniques require a new generation of microscopy calibration targets that are not susceptible to bleaching and can provide a contrast across the multiple modalities. Here, we present a nanodiamond-based calibration target for microscopy, designed for facilitating reproducible measurements at the object plane. The target is designed to support day-to-day instrumentation development efforts in microscopy laboratories. The images of a phantom contain information about the imaging performance of a microscopy system across multiple spectral windows and modalities. Since fluorescent nanodiamonds are not prone to bleaching, the proposed imaging target can serve as a standard, shelf-stable sample to provide rapid reference measurements for ensuring consistent performance of microscopy systems in microscopy laboratories and imaging facilities.

Currently, Hyperspectral signal processing is a crucial area of research. Respectively, various techniques have been investigated to apprehend features combination and multi-label classification issues. Indeed, significant consideration has been given to approaches supporting the use of a single type of features. Moreover, few efforts have been dedicated to model the multi-label aspect of hyperspectral pixels and to integrate simultaneously divergent kinds of interdependent features. In this paper, we propose a novel embedding multi-label learning approach integrating complementary weighted features. The proposed framework combines the singular statistical characteristics of each feature to accomplish a physically meaningful cooperative low-dimensional representation of extracted features. This will grant, in one hand, the refinement of classification process and the propagation of narrow class information to unlabeled sample, in the other hand, when only partial labeling knowledge is available. This paper makes the following contributions: (i) the extraction of multi-view features based on the 3D model of the spectral signature and (ii) an embedding multi-label based approach by better tackling unbalanced and dimensionality issues. A set of complementary spatial/spectral features is extracted in the experimental section from a series of hyperspectral images. The obtained results reflect the efficiency of the proposed classification schema while maintaining a reasonable computational complexity.
