This paper describes a fully autonomous mobile urban robot-X1, which can perform multiple tasks autonomously in an unknown urban environment without human guidance, including mobile reconnaissance, target searching, and object manipulation. The mission-oriented design, which allows reliability and extensibility of the robotic system, includes a high degree of modularity for both hardware and software architecture, and coordination between tasks. Our strategy specifically addresses fundamental issues such as autonomous navigation in unknown urban environments and vision-based object manipulation. All the functionalities have been proved effective in the real urban environments. The robot platform is being built to provide valuable experiences on autonomous robotics research.

In this paper, we investigate a dual-hop opportunistic decode-and-forward relaying scheme where the source may or not be able to communicate directly with the destination. We first derive statistics based on exact probability density function (PDF) of each hop. Then, the PDFs are used to determine closed-form outage probability expression for a transmission rate R. Furthermore, we evaluate the asymptotic outage performance and the diversity order is deduced. Unlike existing works where the analysis focused on high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime, such results are important to enable the designers to take decisions regarding practical systems that operate at low SNR regime. We show that performance simulation results coincide with our analytical results under practical assumption of unbalanced hops.

There exists a need for additional transmission capacity to connect distributed resources such as wind energy from remote locations to the power grid. The high cost of running transmission lines necessitates having a way to minimize the length of transmission required to connect the distributed resources to load centers. In addition, the substations that connect to the transmission lines need to be fault tolerant by ensuring that the loss of any one transmission line does not result in the loss of power to any substation. In this paper, the relative cost of connecting a range of sources to a range of loads with and without fault tolerance is presented. Fault tolerance is achieved through a 2-path redundant graph approach. Studies show that the additional cost of ensuring fault tolerance for selected schemes ranges between 8% and 33%. This percentage value can support decision making in practice.

Wiener filters applied to channel-summed RF echo data was approximated to the ideal Bayesian beamforming strategy for imaging breast lesion features. They can be computed in real-time and perform well provided the system response matrix is circulant. Real systems exhibit depth-varying impulse responses, so performance degrades for some essential diagnostic features. This paper describes the effects of circulant assumption (CA) violations on the robustness of human visual discrimination efficiency, and the effects of regularization, as applied to beamformers for breast sonography. The Wiener filter is then adapted for shift-varying system responses. The trade off between performance and computation time for each approach is studied using simulations and phantoms scanned with a commercial system.

The clinical data stored in the health information system can be categorized as two types including structuralized data and non-structuralized ones. In the paper, a data extraction system is developed to assist data retrieval from the non-structuralized textual clinical documents such as radiology reports, pathology reports, etc. The system provides keyword-based and semantic-driven data matching methodology to extract the specific information from the textual clinical documents. The matching methodology provides the capabilities to recognize the selected keywords and the related semantics in the documents. Through the extraction verification interface, clinicians can extract and verify the matched information semi-automatically. The extracted data can be filled into predefined case-oriented templates. The structuralized data can be stored back into the clinical data warehouse for further analyzing. Moreover, the case-oriented templates can support collecting corresponding extracted data for various researches.

Replying to N. K. Logothetis 468, 10.1038/nature09532 (2010)This is a welcome opportunity to discuss ofMRI, a technology for testing the causal and global impact of defined cell populations in vivo. The accompanying Comment reviews well-known neuroanatomy, but does seem, in its entirety, to be founded on a suggestion that, after experiments were conducted to drive a defined circuit element and measure resulting BOLD signals, we concluded that no other contributory circuit element was recruited by the driven population. This was not the case, however, as correctly understood by others in the fMRI community and as explained in the paper (for example, 'contributions from additional cells and processes downstream of the defined optically triggered population are expected and indeed represent an important aspect of this approach'). Moreover, the complexity of the brain dictates that such possible contributory mechanisms are more numerous than listed in the Comment, including many other circuit and feedback mechanisms and classes of cells within neural circuitry. Ignition delay time (Td) has been widely used to distinguish the abnormal discharges from the normal ones in wire electrical discharge machining (WEDM) process. In this paper an on-line analysis system for the causality of the Td data sequences was developed to evaluate the machining performance of WEDM process. The system is composed of a stand-alone Td processing circuitry and a user-friendly computer program for data analysis. The Td processing circuitry calculates and records the Td of every single electrical discharge in the first place, and then transmits the Td data via an embedded communication port to a desktop or notebook computer. The computer program, after performing the analysis tasks, will display the result in a graphic way. Two mathematical algorithms were employed for the analysis: autocorrelation function and Fourier transform. Through experiments under different working conditions, it was found that the autocorrelation function could be used to detect if arc or short circuit discharges take place consecutively, and to distinguish the WEDM process with similar Td distributions. On the other hand, the spectral analysis revealed that several factors were identified to be able to induce certain periodic patterns of Td data. These factors include the length of wire electrode, the water pressure, etc. © 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This work approaches relative aspects to the alarm processing problem and fault diagnosis in system level, having as purpose filter the alarms generated during a outage and identify the equipment under fault. A methodology was developed using Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) and Genetic Algorithms (GA) in order to resolve the problem. This procedure had as initiative explore the GA capacity to deal with combinatory problems, as well as the ANN processing speed and generalization capacity. Biology has played a key role in influencing the development and optimization of a significant variety of sensors that provide engineers new ideas for improvements to current technology, new sensor technology, and potential sensor miniaturization. Biological systems, such as plants and insects offer significant methods of flight, imaging, sensing, adaptation to environment, and locomotion. The biological domain provides inspiration at many levels, such as cellular, organism, and species. A biological system is any biological organism, organism subsystem, or portion of an organism that is observed to exist. Abstraction of the biological system using analogical reasoning allows an engineering designer to look for a specific solution through mimicry in an approach to biology-inspired design. The analogous approach relies on the idea of figuring out the basis of overall biological system and of each part or subsystem that achieves the overall goal.
