Several recent studies have elucidated why knowledge distillation (KD) improves model performance. However, few have researched the other advantages of KD in addition to its improving model performance. In this study, we have attempted to show that KD enhances the interpretability as well as the accuracy of models. We measured the number of concept detectors identified in network dissection for a quantitative comparison of model interpretability. We attributed the improvement in interpretability to the class-similarity information transferred from the teacher to student models. First, we confirmed the transfer of class-similarity information from the teacher to student model via logit distillation. Then, we analyzed how class-similarity information affects model interpretability in terms of its presence or absence and degree of similarity information. We conducted various quantitative and qualitative experiments and examined the results on different datasets, different KD methods, and according to different measures of interpretability. Our research showed that KD models by large models could be used more reliably in various fields. © 2023, CC BY-NC-SA.

Breast cancer is a malignant tumor with a high mortality rate among women. Therefore, it is necessary to develop novel therapies to effectively treat this disease. In this study, iron selenide nanorods (FeSe2 NRs) were designed for use in magnetic hyperthermic, photothermal, and chemodynamic therapy (MHT/PTT/CDT) for breast cancer. To illustrate their efficacy, FeSe2 NRs were modified with the chemotherapeutic agent methotrexate (MTX). MTX-modified FeSe2 (FeSe2-MTX) exhibited excellent controlled drug release properties. Fe2+ released from FeSe2 NRs induced the release of •OH from H2O2 via a Fenton/Fenton-like reaction, enhancing the efficacy of CDT. Under alternating magnetic field (AMF) stimulation and 808 nm laser irradiation, FeSe2-MTX exerted potent hyperthermic and photothermal effects by suppressing tumor growth in a breast cancer nude mouse model. In addition, FeSe2 NRs can be used for magnetic resonance imaging in vivo by incorporating their superparamagnetic characteristics into a single nanomaterial. Overall, we presented a novel technique for the precise delivery of functional nanosystems to tumors that can enhance the efficacy of breast cancer treatment. © 2024 The Authors. Navigating the complex legal and regulatory landscape requires a sophisticated platform that is not only comprehensive but also user-friendly and enables seamless analysis and document comparison in the legal realm. To address this challenging requirement, this research is dedicated to the user experience (UX) design of state-of the-art cloud-native mobile applications specifically designed for legal and regulatory harmonization. The methodology used is based on design thinking principles and takes advantage of the benefits of cloud computing. These include, but are not limited to, scalability, reliability, and security. The result is a solution that is not only powerful but also cost-effective. The core of this application follows a user-centered design philosophy and involves potential users closely in the design process. A comprehensive evaluation is performed using the System Usability Scale (SUS) methodology to measure the effectiveness and usability of the application. The results of this comprehensive approach are convincing. The application has an impressive 95.5% usage rate, indicating strong user engagement. Furthermore, user satisfaction ratings are particularly high and transformative impact of this application in a complex environment of legal harmonization. Through its innovative design, seamless functionality, and user-centric approach, this application has proven to be not only a technical solution, but also a catalyst for positive change in the legal and regulatory harmonization process.

Multiphoton fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM) is used to collect label-free metabolic information from biological samples via autofluorescence lifetime imaging of reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NAD(P)H). However, FLIM has traditionally been limited by slow acquisition due to the limited bandwidth of analog electronics that perform photon counting and time-tagging. This slow acquisition has restricted the applicability of multiphoton FLIM of NAD(P)H by impeding the ability to accurately study biological problems that require characterization of fast dynamics. Faster image acquisition can be achieved by directly digitizing the amplified output of a hybrid photodetector and computationally determining photon counts via the Single- and multiphoton PEak Event Detection (SPEED) algorithm. This method, bypassing the limited-bandwidth analog electronics used for photon counting and time-tagging of photons in traditional FLIM, enables fast photon counting capabilities which are well suited for fast, high-dynamic range biological processes such as metabolic changes during apoptosis. Here, we utilize this technology to examine fast dynamics of apoptosis in 2D culture of normal and cancerous human breast cell lines, rat mammary tumor tissue-derived organoids, and in vivo rat mammary tumors. Results indicate that apoptosis-related metabolic dynamics are biological model-dependent and based on local pharmacokinetics, with tumor derived organoids in Matrigel showing a significantly slower response than in vivo or in vitro 2D cell models. Future work should carefully consider these implications when determining which tumor model to use for experimentation and should improve tumor models to better represent in vivo tumor apoptosis dynamics. © 2023 SPIE.

Optical spectroscopy of excitons in ReS2 monolayers grown by chemical vapor deposition

Monolayers of ReS2 were grown by a chemical vapor deposition technique on SiO2/Si substrates and investigated at room temperature by using μ-Raman, μ-photoluminescence (PL) and absorbance spectroscopies. The Raman scattering spectrum exhibits several phonon modes that were confirmed by the computation analysis based on the density functional theory. The ReS2 structural integrity was confirmed by using the XRD and the energy dispersion spectroscopy that was obtained by the scanning electron microscopy. Photoluminescence spectra show excitons related to interband transition in thin monolayer flakes and bulk-like structures. Additionally, a sharp PL line located at 1.2620 eV with a second harmonic peak at 2.5420 eV were observed and explained in terms of interband excitonic transitions originated within the rhenium 5d orbit. An optical absorbance spectrum with an exciton peak around 1.4660 eV was obtained for an assembly of ReS2 flakes grown on silica substrate. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Opinion has always affected businesses and individuals especially from the Public. People react through social media and spread it incompletely. The situation was then accepted as public opinion. There are three categories of opinion i.e., positive, negative, and neutral. To investigate public opinion on a particular issue of interest, sentiment analysis might be employed. By offering a solution to the text classification challenge, this experiment focuses on the perception of airline tweets among the American public. We offer a method to classify tweets as positive, negative, or neutral using three machine learning classifiers: Random Forest Classifier, Naive Bayes Classifier, and K-Nearest Neighbors Classifier. We examined the performance of three machine learning classifiers in terms of accuracy, average precision, average recall, and average f-1 score. The results demonstrate that the Random Forest Classifier, which produces 82% accuracy, 80% average precision, 82% average recall, and 80% average f1-score, performs the best among the machine learning classifiers.

With the advent of the global aging era, the impact of stroke on humans is continuously increasing. Therefore, new therapeutic approaches to enhance patient recovery are receiving growing attention. Stroke is a severe neurological disorder that causes brain damage, requiring extended periods of rehabilitation for patients to return to normal life. Currently, common clinical methods largely rely on traditional passive limb rehabilitation, primarily targeting peripheral nerve training. Nowadays, an increasing number of people are recognizing the importance of post-stroke neuroplasticity. This study aims to activate patients' central nervous system and proposes a brain-machine interface (BCI) exoskeleton system based on human cognition. By designing three cognitive brainwave training models, including an attention-based standing-up model detecting θ-band power decrease, a relaxation-based sitting-down model detecting α-band power increase, and a walking model detecting MRCP, patients can actively control lower limb exoskeleton movement using *** study provides cross-validation accuracy through both normal subjects and stroke patients, with accuracies of 87.13±9.38 and 80.83±9.68, respectively. Envisioning a rehabilitation system guided by human cognition, our team has developed an intuitive BCI exoskeleton system. © 2023 IEEE.

State-of-the-art intracortical neuroprostheses currently enable communication at 60+ words per minute for anarthric individuals by training on over 10K sentences to account for phoneme variability in different word contexts. There is limited understanding about whether this performance can be maintained in decoding naturalistic speech with 40K+ word vocabularies across elicited, spontaneous, and conversational speech contexts. We introduce a vocal-unit-level generalization test to explicitly evaluate neural decoder performance with an expanded and more diverse behavioral repertoire. Tested on neural decoders modeling zebra finch vocalization, an analog to human vocal production, we compare three decoders with different input types: spike trains, neural factors, and firing rates. The factors and rates are latent neural features inferred using trained Latent Factor Analysis via Dynamical Systems (LFADS) models that capture the population neural dynamics during vocal production. While the conventional random holdout generalization error measure is similar for all three decoders, factor- and rate-based decoders outperform spike-based decoders when testing vocal-unit-holdout generalization error. These results suggest the later models better adapt to flexible vocalization inference when trained with partial observation of data variation, motivating further exploration of decoders incorporating latent neural and vocalization dynamics. © 2024 IEEE.

Individuals who are unable to walk independently spend most of the day in a *** population is at high risk for developing pressure injuries caused by ***,early diagnosis and prevention of these injuries still remain ***,we introduce battery-free,wireless,multimodal sensors and a movable system for continuous measurement of pressure,temperature,and hydration at skin *** device design includes a crack-activated pressure sensor with nanoscale encapsulations for enhanced sensitivity,a temperature sensor for measuring skin temperature,and a galvanic skin response sensor for measuring skin hydration *** movable system enables power harvesting,and data communication to multiple wireless devices mounted at skin-cushion interfaces of wheelchair users over full body *** evaluations and numerical simulations of the devices,together with clinical trials for wheelchair patients,demonstrate the feasibility and stability of the sensor system for preventing pressure injuries caused by sitting.
