Active metasurfaces are emerging as the core of next-generation optical devices with their tunable optical responses and flat-compact *** for the terahertz band,active metasurfaces have been developed as fascinating devices for optical chopping and compressive sensing ***,performance regulation by changing the dielectric parameters of the integrated functional materials exhibits severe limitations and parasitic ***,we introduce a C-shape-split-ring-based phase discontinuity metasurface with liquid crystal elastomer as the substrate for infrared modulation of terahertz ***-focused infrared light is applied to manipulate the deflection of the liquid crystal elastomer substrate,enabling controllable and broadband wavefront steering with a maximum output angle change of 22°at *** as another control method is also investigated and compared with infrared *** further demonstrate the performance of liquid crystal elastomer metasurface as a beam steerer,frequency modulator,and tunable beam splitter,which are highly desired in terahertz wireless communication and imaging *** proposed scheme demonstrates the promising prospects of mechanically deformable metasurfaces,thereby paving the path for the development of reconfigurable metasurfaces.

Time series have numerous applications in finance, healthcare, IoT, and smart city. In many of these applications, time series typically contain personal data, so privacy infringement may occur if they are released directly to the public. Recently, local differential privacy (LDP) has emerged as the state-of-the-art approach to protecting data privacy. However, existing works on LDP-based collections cannot preserve the shape of time series. A recent work, PatternLDP, attempts to address this problem, but it can only protect a finite group of elements in a time series due to ?-event level privacy guarantee. In this paper, we propose PrivShape, a trie-based mechanism under user-level LDP to protect all elements. PrivShape first transforms a time series to reduce its length, and then adopts trie-expansion and two-level refinement to improve utility. By extensive experiments on real-world datasets, we demonstrate that PrivShape outperforms PatternLDP when adapted for offline use, and can effectively extract frequent shapes. © 2024 IEEE.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a significant concern for individuals with type 1 diabetes (T1D), impacting their quality of life and healthcare costs. Identifying T1D patients at greater risk of developing CKD is crucial for preventive measures. However, it is challenging due to the asymptomatic progression of CKD and limited nephrologist availability in many countries. This study explores machine learning algorithms to predict CKD risk in T1D patients using ten years of retrospective data from the Epidemiology of Diabetes Interventions and Complications clinical trial. Eleven machine learning algorithms were applied to twenty-two readily available features from T1D patients’ routine check-ups and self-assessments to develop 10-year CKD risk prediction models. In addition, we also proposed a heterogeneous ensemble model (STK) using a stacking generalization approach. The models’ performance was evaluated using different evaluation metrics and repeated stratified k-fold cross-validation. Several predictive models showed reliable performance in CKD risk prediction, with the proposed ensemble model being the best performing with an average accuracy of 0.97, specificity of 0.98, sensitivity/recall of 0.96, precision of 0.98, F1 score of 0.97, Kappa and MCC score of 0.94, AUROC of 0.99, and Precision-Recall curve of 0.99. The proposed machine learning approach could be applicable for CKD risk prediction in T1D patients to ensure the necessary precautions to overcome the risk. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag London Ltd., part of Springer Nature 2024.

We consider a wireless networked control system (WNCS) with imperfect bidirectional links for real-time applications such as smart grids. To maintain the stability of WNCS, captured by the probability that plant state violates preset values, at minimal cost, heterogeneous physical processes are monitored by multiple sensors. This status information, such as dynamic plant state and Markov Process-based context information, is then received/estimated by the controller for remote control. However, scheduling multiple sensors and designing the controller with limited resources is challenging due to their coupling, delay, and transmission loss. We formulate a Constrained Markov Decision Problem (CMDP) to minimize violation probability with cost constraints. We reveal the relationship between the goal and different updating actions by analyzing the significance of information that incorporates goal-related usefulness and contextual importance. Subsequently, a goal-oriented deterministic scheduling policy is proposed. Two sensing-assisted control strategies and a control-aware estimation policy are proposed to improve the violation probability-cost tradeoff, integrated with the scheduling policy to form a goal-oriented co-design framework. Additionally, we explore retransmission in downlink transmission and qualitatively analyze its preference scenario. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed goal-oriented co-design policy outperforms previous work in simultaneously reducing violation probability and cost. © 1972-2012 IEEE.

Value of Information Optimization for Object Detection-Driven Joint Video Transmission and Processing in UAV-Enabled Wireless Networks

In the wake of disasters, rapid and efficient search and rescue operations are essential. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have become instrumental in such scenarios, providing real-time video streaming that can be used for object detection to locate survivors. This technology, however, faces significant challenges due to the limited communication and onboard computational resources, which are critical for processing and transmitting high-quality video data. To address these issues, this paper proposes a novel approach that leverages the concept of the value of information (VoI) to optimize the trade-off between the accuracy of object detection and the associated communication costs. By dynamically adjusting the video stream’s quality, the proposed system aims to ensure that the most valuable information is transmitted within the constraints of bandwidth and computational power. To operationalize this concept, we introduce a Deep reinforcement learning (DRL) algorithm that employs the soft actor-critic (SAC) method. The algorithm benefits from the integration of object features and contextual information extracted by ResNet50, which is then processed through a cross-attention structure within the critic network. Our simulation results indicate that our approach significantly enhances the VoI, achieving higher accuracy in object detection with better resource management compared to traditional strategies. © 2019 IEEE.

This study examines the efficacy of a deep learning-based binaural speech reproduction system via headphones that integrates real-time head tracking to simulate a stable speech source in a virtual environment. We developed a binaural speech reproduction system that operates in real time using a custom head-tracking device based on the Arduino platform and a pre-trained neural network model for binaural speech synthesis. The system dynamically adapts audio output based on the head orientation of the listener, operating with an overall latency of 70 ms on standard computing hardware. We conducted a subjective speech localization task with 15 young, normal-hearing participants. Initial results showed a 40% accuracy in localizing a static speech source, which significantly improved with dynamic head movements. Participants reported minimal dizziness and distortion, indicating good tolerability and sound quality. Despite some limitations, such as non-personalized settings and perceivable latency, the findings demonstrate the potential of deep learning approaches to enhance realism in virtual auditory environments.
